'NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly flew to Seattle last week and met privately with King County Executive Dow Constantine and Seattle Mayor Ed Murray. Bettman has publicly stated the league has interest in placing a franchise in the Seattle market, but that "building issues" have gotten in the way.'

Id love for seatle to have a team then wed have a driveable opposing team would be a good rivalry :)

Relocation yes, expansion a BIG FAT NO.

30 NHL teams should be the maximum, there's too much parity around the league as it is.

I also think Portland,(OR) is a good fit for a possible relocation.

Bettman and Daly went out of their way to fly all the way across to Seattle for a meeting with the Mayor? This is very good news. That doesnt happen unless there is a real interest in getting a franchise going there.

I wonder if its about getting State lottery or other funding to build a new arena .

SEATTLE - Multiple sources confirmed Tuesday that the NHL commissioner and deputy commissioner made a personal visit to Seattle last week and met with its top two elected officials.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly flew to Seattle last week and met privately with King County Executive Dow Constantine and Seattle Mayor Ed Murray. Bettman has publicly stated the league has interest in placing a franchise in the Seattle market, but that "building issues" have gotten in the way.

Constantine spokesman Frank Abe described the meeting between Bettman and Constantine as a "meet and greet" and that "nothing was really brewing right now."

NHL spokesman Frank Brown confirmed the meeting Tuesday, and said "Commissioner Bettman met with the mayor while on the West Coast for playoff games. The purpose of the meeting was solely to obtain a status report on the new arena."

Seattle City Council President Tim Burgess said he was not present for either of the gatherings.

It is the strongest sign yet of the league's interest in placing a team in the Emerald City.

But It's unclear why Bettman and Daly made the personal appearance in Seattle, as opposed to discussing matters over the phone.

Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer have agreed to partially fund a new NBA and NHL complex, which is currently undergoing an environmental review. The memorandum of understanding, approved by the Seattle City and King County councils, allows construction to begin after the environmental review is complete and an NBA team is acquired. City leaders and Hansen have indicated they are not willing right now to renegotiate the deal to allow an NHL team to prompt construction.

Sources have told KING 5 that Constantine has privately been meeting over the last several months with potential hockey investors, who are interested in bringing a team to Seattle. Three different groups in recent months have expressed interest in owning an NHL franchise in Seattle.

A new NHL team would likely have to play at least one year in Key Arena, depending on the status of a new complex. It's unclear if the NHL would be willing to commit a team to Seattle without some sort of guarantee a state-of-the-art, hockey-friendly facility was definitively on the way.

Bryan Stevens, spokesperson for the Seattle Department of Planning and Development, said on Tuesday that the environmental review on the project is now not scheduled to be completed until "sometime this fall". He added, that he believed, that there had been "no measurable movement" in the last few weeks.

I think they are laying the ground work in case they have to finally move one of their money pits (Phoenix or Florida) and desperately want to avoid moving another failed southern US franchise to a Canadian City like Quebec (which they railroaded out as quick as they could). Bettman almost ground the enamel off his teeth trying to spit out the welcome back to Winnipeg, and threatened them in the next sentence. No way in Hell he wants Quebec City back in. Getting another new rink in the US also gives them more leverage for their extortion racket in places like Phoenix.

Vancouver will get a real rival...

I can picture their new jersey... remember the late 90's Islanders jersey? HA!

We all know Bettman doesn't want the NHL to gain ground in Canada, he doesn't even want Canadian teams making the SCF's.

PS- Panthers to Seattle... hahaha on Lu.

Relocation yes, expansion a BIG FAT NO.

30 NHL teams should be the maximum, the talent pool has been diluted enough in the league as it is.

For what it's worth,

Didn't Bettman full on say he wasn't meeting with anyone regarding expansion or relocation of teams just like a week ago?

And what does this mean for a place like Quebec which has been begging for a team and sinking millions in to new upgrades arena etc?

The west needs two more teams (frack the team needs a 4-6 team contraction really...) to even out the conferences, but damn this little weasel.

As cool as Seattle would be.

Who do we protect in an expansion?

And does anyone REALLY want to play regularly against a massively deep and uber skilled young Panthers team with a decade of top 5 picks and a fan base as loud and supportive as ours?

Since the lockout where he started wearing jeans in the final hours of the CBA negotiations, I have starte to like Bettman more and more. He seems more human now. I like the Quebec City and Seattle push. Hockey is a Northern game.
