COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed center Alexander Wennberg to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The 19-year-old Wennberg was Columbus' first pick, 14th overall, in the 2013 NHL draft.

Wennberg recently completed his rookie season with Frolunda HC of the Swedish Hockey League, finishing second on the club with 16 goals and adding five assists in 50 games. He was a finalist for the league's Rookie of the Year award.

A year earlier, Wennberg had 14 goals and 18 assists in 46 games for Djurgarden in Sweden's Allsvenskan League.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound native of Nacka, Sweden, has represented his country at several international events.

Good for them but i wonder why they sign him now? Theres no guarantee he will be a stud. If is not is there a big risk or cost? Not sure how the elc works

If its not a risk should we do the same with bo and shink?

ELC is the standard way of signing a rookie. 3 year deal worth up to just under a million dollars in salary plus performance bonuses(if any). No this is not a big risk. They signed him now because he developed well in Sweden and they want him to play in either Columbus next year or their AHL team.

Wennberg looks to be a fantastic pick, one of many for Columbus last year. He had a great year with Frolunda, kid will be a star IMO. The 2013 draft really looks to have the potential to almost be as good as the 2003 NHL draft

Future finally looks good in Columbus.

Ironically, things turned around for them when Rick Nash left.

I don't think that's much of a surprise. They've gone from a one man team to a team that's developing in almost every position. Plus, Nash is one of the more overrated players in the league. He's good, but not good enough to carry a team on his own.
