NewYorkYankees8771
Im sorry, but in my opinion the leading candidate to be next canucks coach should be LA Kings assistant and former Philadelphia Flyers Head Coach John Stevens. It's his type of uptempo offensive hockey that the city of vancouver wants to see (and the city of vancouver is very similar to the city of philadelphia by both being unpatient and wanting to see in your face, gritty MIKE RICHARDS type hockey). John Stevens has the resume as he's already won a cup with LA, a calder cup with philly farm team and went to the conference finals in 2008 with philly against pittsburgh (which they would have won if they had a goalie). The main problem is that LA is still in the playoffs, but if they lose to chicago, i am praying that linden and benning give this guy a serious interview, as he was the leading candidate last year until the Acquilini's supposedly forced the hiring of Tortorella. - Vancouver wants Mike Richards like hockey (gritty offense) which John Stevens and the LA Kings (right now) and 2006-2009 Philadelphia Flyers showcased. - He's won before. - By winning the calder cup in 2005 (with richards and carter in the AHL), it shows he can work with young players like Horvat, Shinkaruk, etc... TheRussianRocket.
I love John Stevens and would absolutely want him to be coaching a team I loved however, I personally feel Trotz is just a notch higher than him. If Trotz wasn't available then without a doubt Stevens would be the go the guy.
Jai604
John Stevens would be a great coach here. Word on the street, however, is that it will be Barry Trotz.
Derp...
Street Cred, thats where the truth comes from. Pretty soon the Canucks are going to have the Trotz. Stevens would be a good pick though.

DeltaSwede
I wouldn't mind seeing either one of Barry Trotz or John Stevens. I think they both bring a lot of positive things but also different things from each other. I think Trotz would do a tremendous job with players like Alex Edler who has struggled. He has coached Dan Hamhuis before and that will work out again. I think our entire defense core will be better under Trotz and most importantly the defensemen that are coming up (Corrado, Stanton, Cederholm, Sauve). Stevens on the other hand would improve the play of our forwards and I think he has proven to be able to be a successful coach at the NHL level, something that Barry Trotz hasn't really achieved with little playoff success. Just like the discussion between Shero vs. Benning (probably Benning), I really don't mind who the Canucks go for because I think Trevor Linden knows more about the league and this team than I will ever do. Since the word on the street is that Trotz will be hired I hope that they go after an offensive assistant coach like Adam Oates, unless Barry needs to bring in his right hand man (don't know who he is or if he has one). If Stevens is hired I would love to see Jim Playfair being brought in from Phoenix for defensive duties. I would be very happy with either one of these combinations for the front office: Barry Trotz, Glen Gulutzan, Adam Oates John Steves, Glen Gulutzan, Jim Playfair I think it is hard to argue that any of these coaching staffs would be a bad option. Very excited for how things are playing out for Vancouver this offseason, trust ownership and Trevor to bring in the right people for this organization moving forward. Positive thinking! PetRocksAreMotionless
Stevens would be the best choice for me, he has coached in both conferences and has had a lot of success, and is most likely coveted by a few other teams. No knock against Trotz but I really like how Stevens progressed as a coach over the years. Stevens would bring a more in your face type offensive game. That's what I would rather see. I like how you think .. I could live with either of the combinations listed .. am glad you added Jimmy Playfair, as his work with the Coyotes has worked well. I could also see Mike Johnston and Kevin Dineen in the mix depending on availablity of the 'chosen ones'. You said it all in your last sentence .. positive thinking! EDIT: Changed Johnson to Johnston so 'tas' can quit clenching whatever it is he is clenching this morning.

DefCon1
We go from Torts to Trotz Thats like going from a beat up 1990 Geo metro to a 2014 BMW 745. Its a pretty big upgrade.
combover
stevens is the best option for this club. i just don't want a coach thats going to be hired on and asked to change the way he's coached for 15 seasons and hope he can do it its not fair to him or the team. hire the right guy that coaches the way the team is built. this team is not built to dump and chase or trap. Torts isn't and wasn't a bad coach. He has proven historically to be a winning coach. He is the US' most winningest coach in fact.
alfstonker
If Benning is the new GM then Stevens may well be his type of coach. I don't think we should rule out the new GM's leanings as I'm sure he will have the nod to select his own man, having already had explained to him the type of team Linden is looking to see in Vancouver. coyotecanuck
We go from Torts to Trotz True story about Trotz. I saw him at one of those big box craft stores in Kelowna a couple summers ago. My wife and I assume his wife had dragged us there while they got crafty. Standing around waiting I could hear him on his cell phone passionately demanding that "we need a face off man." If memory serves I think it was the first day of free agency too. The phone was in his ear the entire time his wife was shopping.

If memory serves, Gaustad and the Preds were having trouble getting an extension done in 2012 and everyone figured he'd end up testing free agency. On June 30th, they finally announced that he'd been inked to a 4-year term.
