timberz21
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=452854 "he Calgary Hitmen announced on Thursday that forward Jake Virtanen underwent successful shoulder surgery and is expected to be out of action for four to six months. Virtanen, who is projected to go in the first round of next month's NHL draft, will be at the league's scouting combine next week in Toronto, but will not participate in the fitness portion. The 17-year-old had 45 goals and 71 points in 71 games last season" Could be a major blow to his draft ranking. Also, if he would've been our pick, I was hoping to see him at the WJC or at least make the camp. This could be a blow to his chances there as well. Xbox
Alex Galchenyuk of 2014? He still went 5th and is probably the best F in that draft (lol @ Yakupov) I'd still take him 6th if all 5 of the big 5 are taken.
CRAZY_4_NAZZY
If a team really likes him they will be patient with him, regardless of the length of his injury. Wonder though does this mean he won't be at the combine at all than?
MJDDawg
Or, history repeats itself and the Canucks draft him anyway. Just as they did with JJ Daigneault at the 1984 draft when they called his name and he came on stage on crutches and a full leg cast.
timberz21
Alex Galchenyuk of 2014? He still went 5th and is probably the best F in that draft (lol @ Yakupov) I'd still take him 6th if all 5 of the big 5 are taken. Difference is, Galchenyuk could have challenge for the 1st overall, if healthy. And he still went 3rd overall, which is really good. Virtanen when healthy wasn't even in the running for the top 5. Before this news, he could have gone anywhere between 6th and 15th overall (specially if the Canucks passes on him at #6). So, it's not the same scenario as Galchenyuk. Ossi Vaananen
Noooo, Virtanen is my guy, but this will absolutely affect his ranking. It's hard to take a guy who's injured. Next best: Ritchie.
SamJamIam
i could see him dropping in the draft cause of this He will. Although he was always bait for a team to make a dumb decision on by drafting him too high. As long as that team wasn't us, it was better to have him in the mix. Our chance of a top 5 dropping certainly just went down.
Jiggs50
Well he's going drop now 100%. Ritchie or Ehlers now...
Rey
His stock might just rise, now that people know he was playing with an injury and still look good. It's an injury guys, people recover. People are treated like it's a bigger deal than it actually is.
TOMapleLaughs
Wasn't Ritchie banged-up as well? Looks like we're praying one of the top-5 falls.
-Vintage Canuck-
I think he'll still go in the Top 15.

People are treated like it's a bigger deal than it actually is. It is a big deal. Injury history is important. You want your draft picks to not have had major surgery so young. Shoulder surgery is major and can affect your shot, your hitting ability, etc.
timberz21
Highly doubt this will impact his ranking at all. I don't know why some of you think it will/should. Injuries heal. Not only because of injuries, because the combine is also a factor. Specially since the top 6 to 15 is highly volatile this year, an excellent showing by one or more of Ehlers, Kapanen, Ritchie, Nylander, Fleury at the combine my make them leapfrog Virtanen. If that injury was to one of the top 5, them it probably wouldn't affect is rank as much, since the top 5 is almost a lock, according to pretty much all rankings. Jägermeister
Alex Galchenyuk of 2014? He still went 5th and is probably the best F in that draft (lol @ Yakupov) I'd still take him 6th if all 5 of the big 5 are taken. Not really comparable. Galchenyuk only played 8 games his draft year after his injury and only managed 4 points, Virtanen managed the whole season before his injury. Galchenyuk also went 3rd. theminister
I don't think it will affect his draft slot much if at all. Any intelligent team would have sent him back to junior this year, and likely next year as well, as he develops his body and overall game. He is still a very young player so any interest that a team would have had should not affect his long term potential in their eyes.
