[Signing] Halak to NYI

Recommended Posts

They kept their 2014 1st round? Now that's a ballzy move. Can't believe they just forfeited their McDavid lottery pick. I strongly disagree with those who say the playoffs are rigged, but the draft lottery is a completely different story.

Halak re-signing and the the Isles retaining their pick this year went hand in hand. Had they lost him to FA, the Isles would have kept next years first rounder. Halak gives them stability on the backend, without question. And really, their forward group keeps looking better year after year. At this point, they need a little more stability on defense in order to at least secure a playoff birth. Since they have managed their cap incredibly well and have a lot of cap space available, I can see them making plays for one or several of the following: Matt Niskanen, Dan Boyle, Andrej Meszaros, Willie Mitchell, and Joni Pitkanen. They still have roughly $9.1M just to hit the cap floor next season (assuming cap goes to $71M). This is a team that is only 2 top 4 defenders away from actually being a legitimate playoff team.

I agree.

I think they may even move the 1st this year for a top 4 defender. If they can add one at the draft then they may have more luck in FA as well as they show they are serious. They have a lot if very good pieces but they need to add to it.

They need to make waves in their new building and this is the year to finally spend some cash.

People like to crap on the Islanders for all the bonehead mistakes they've made for decades; and believe me, as a huge Islanders fan, nobody gets that more then me. However, it's almost as if for all the awful mistakes they've made, the good decisions they have made have been incredibly positive. Look no further then Tavares ($5.5M), Okposo ($2.8M), Hamonic ($3.8M), Hickey (picked up for nothing), Bailey ($3.3M), Nielsen ($2.75M). And now Halak for $4.5M. In regards to managing their cap, they have done a terrific job. Now their trades have been p*ss poor, you can't spin it any other way. Whether or not trading Nino or Moulson were good moves or not, that's not the problem; the problem is the return that the Islanders received. Just terrible. However, as far as building a team from within, the Islanders future is looking really good; IF they can now solidify their defense with 2 good signings. They have the cap space for it. As far as prospects and youth, the Isles are looking incredibly good.

You nailed it. If they could add a few top four guys like any of the guys you mentioned I wouldn't be all that worried about having a lottery pick either. If they manage to snag someone like Mitchell, man, Halak would look even better. Hopefully the Isles can put it together and get back into the playoffs next season.

Partially because I root for the Isles, and partially because I'd like to see them stick it to Buffalo.

It's also nice to see Halak find a home, he's too good a goalie to have been bounced around like he has been.

Imagine if they had kept Niederreiter and Moulson

Except I really don't think the Islanders' problem is forwards. Moulson was going to walk and/or demand more money then he was worth to them. And as for Niederreiter, he was yet another type of forward that they did not need; not to mention that the relationship grew sour rather quickly. It's not so much that they traded them, it's that they traded them and got fleeced in the deals. I did not have a problem with them receiving Clutterbuck in return, as he is the type of player you do need on your team, especially during the playoffs. It's just that they only received him (a solid 3rd liner) and a 3rd round draft pick in 2013, which turned into goalie prospect Eamon McAdam. Ok, get Clutterbuck, but certainly ask for a little more in return. As for Moulson trade, that was just stupid. Get rid of him, fine; but don't give up a 1st and a 2nd round draft pick for a UFA in return. That was just ridiculous.

I think the Canucks will probably head into the season with Lack and Markstrom, as they should. But it would have been funny to have a Halak-Lack tandem. Has a ring to it, you know?

Lack-Halak is a little better. No?

Trading a 4 pick for 1-2% chance at McDavid isn't that smart in my opinion. It's like the guy that goes to the casino to pay rent.

It ain't going happen.
