New York Rangers center Derek Stepan had surgery Friday to repair a broken jaw, according to coach Alain Vigneault. There is no timetable for his return.

Stepan was injured on a hit by Montreal Canadiens forward Brandon Prust in the first period of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final on Thursday.
He returned to the game after the hit and played 17:24. He assisted on Chris Kreider's game-tying goal in final seconds of the third period. Vigneault said further testing Friday revealed the fracture.
Prust was not penalized on the hit but will have a hearing Friday with the NHL Department of Player Safety.
Stepan has three goals and eight assists in 17 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Wow that hit was serious! Strong guy for staying in the game though. Wonder how this affects the playoffs for the Rangers.

Good from the Habs point of view. Was a late hit but whatever. People are damn too crazy about these types of things anyways. Yea it's for the better of players health and all but come on, not everything will go down accordingly and there will always be these types of plays.

Have to say it was bad in the sense Stepan gave the puck away, took a few solid strides and then wham got knocked but still, I don't really care tbh. Even if it were a Canuck player I wouldn't mind. It was a late hit and that's it.

Clean hit, IMO. Unfortunate for Stepan, but if this helps Rags to lose, so much the better. The jam will heal, but I will never stop puking if the Rags get to the Finals.

Ever been in New York? You either get it or you don't. I was front and center in Vancouver in '94 but after having lived New York with my own soul, can't dislike anything about the city, even the Rangers.

Put this in context with Brian Burke counselling interim-Sherrif Mike Murphy to suspend Aaron Rome for the remainder of the SC-Final.... that's 4 games..., on a marginally late-hit (0.6 sec. late) that would have been legal other-wise...thereby basing that suspension mainly upon the injury sustained by the player.

Hmmmmmm, I wonder what will happen here then....with an O-6 team playing another O-6 team, who just lost their star-goalie to suspicious contact with no-call or supplimental discipline attached? Will there be some consistancy....or evidence that a fix might be in? Let us wait & see.

I've been to New York dozens of times. Never lived there, but I was in a touring band in the 90s and I love the city. I hate the sports teams though. The fans especially.
