The connection with the farm team

Hopefully Benning will do something about the teams farm team constantly being moved and its reported detachment from the parent team. Wining teams like Boston do it better. Detroit is another one. Maybe thats more on Lindens plate but the pundits were talking about the problem Vancouver has had for years with their farm tteam.

The Canuck farm team situation is like the old Hank Snow song, "I've been everywhere".

Have we really had a problem with our farm teams in the past? I don't think so. We've definitely switched/moved our farm teams a number of times over the last number of years, but our farm teams have been successful (not every year, but for the most part) and have developed a number of players like Kesler, Bieksa, Corrado, etc.

I do agree with you that it is vitally important to have open two-way communication and discussion between the big club and the farm team and make sure they are on the same page. Apparently Tortorella didn't speak to Green once last year...

Dating back to Linden's years (1988)... The canucks have had the following farm teams: *ahem*

Milwalkee Admirals

Hamilton Canucks

Syracuse Crunch

Kansas City Blades (one whole season there!)

Manitoba Moose (clocking in as the longest affiliation, 10 years)

Chicago Wolves

Utica Comets

So in 25 years, 7 different primary farm affiliates.

In the same timeframe, Detroit clocks in with 6, Rangers with 6, Chicago with 6, Leafs have 3, Boston with 2 (Providence being the team for the last 20 years).

We aren't really out of the ordinary.

I don't understand OP.

Are you saying the issue is the distance of the team from Vancouver?

Quite honestly, I think the Canucks are finally in a good situation with the team. It's in an area where most other AHL teams are located, so it makes road trips easier, which in turn allows the team to practice a lot more...which is what you want with your prospects. It's well supported and the community there has accepted them with open arms.

I think they're contracted to be there for 5 years so they won't be going anywhere soon. After that who's to say. There is a movement by some of the NHL teams in the West to relocate their AHL teams to the West so in 5 years once our deal with Utica is up, it may very well make more sense for the team to move out West and maybe even to Abby.

Until then, I'm quite satisfied with where they're at now.

Big difference is the Canucks own their farm club now. Now unlike with the Chicago Wolves, the Canucks can dictate who plays, how many FA's are signed to play etc. Best of all our prospects can get ice time, so they can play and improve. When someone else owns the club, they want to be competitive and play vets more than prospects.

You do realize we move the farm team to Utica after buying the team from St Louis right? Maybe Torts was detached from the farm team, but that doesn't mean the rest of the organization was.

our farm team is in the best shape it's been in since manitoba. also, the lack of communication you refer to was torts not making the calls. green was in contact with assistants and management regularly according to brendan burke (comets commentator).

This is a thread about an issue that really isn't an issue at all.

Let's look at the positives:

  • Geographical position is perfect for the AHL (Less travel, more practice)
  • Great fan base
  • Vancouver have full control over player transactions with the club
  • Vancouver dictate who will be on the team and therefore most likely ice time as well
  • They are now "closer" to their farm team (not geographically, but ideologically)
  • Players would feel closer to being Canucks (Canucks colors, same ownership as the parent club etc.)
  • More control over the team

Can't really think of any negatives.. It's not close to Vancouver so Vancouver fans can't watch their prospects on a regular basis? Buy a broadcasting packet or something. It's better the way it is now than it was 2 years ago.

Exactly .. that is also why our prospects should get coaching that is a lot more consistent with what the Canucks need system wise, assuming the 'system's' sole purpose is to provide the 'structure' both Trev and Benji stressed was a key part of going forward.

Utica seems to have a strong foundation for hockey and business wise it is working - unlike Abbotsford. Plus the travel is light.
