BurgerKing
Buffalo picks 98-04, Bruin picks 07-09 Kalinin, Kotalik, Miller, Gaustad, Pominville, Roy, Thorburn, Paille, Wideman, Ballard, MacArthur, Vanek, Hejda, Stafford, Kaleta, Sekera, Colborne, Caron, Canucks picks same time Allen, Ruutu, Sedin, Sedin, Umberger, Bieksa, Kesler, Schneider, Edler, Brown, Hansen, Hodgson, Schroeder I stopped at 09 because I wanna give Spooner, Knight and younger prospects on both teams an opportunity to prove themselves. I went off the info provided by wikipedia, they didn't say what Benning was doing 05-06. He was off the grid, lol. At the very least we can say that Benning didn't exactly blow Van out of the water. Infact, if I'm going into a playoff series, I would rather take the Canuck players. Bottom line there is minimal evidence to suggest that Benning was better at drafting than what we had here, Boston got most of their current core guys from 03-06 before Benning got there, suggesting there was really good scouting there already. Yes Benning drafted more NHLers while he was with Buf, but during the same time Van had better quality players that you would want in the playoffs. So expain to me why Benning is coming here with a reputation of being a genius at the draft. What y'all think?

PowerAids
05-06 was the lockout year. All in all some decent picks, at least a better hit ratio than we've seen here in van the last decade.

When people say the Canucks drafting sucks, they mean since the Gillis era which began 8 years ago, not in 98... Gillis didn't draft any of the players you mentioned except Schroeder and hodgson and they're both not doing too well.

AppleJack
How bout we let our GM do his job before jumping off of the #wewantbenning bandwagon. Honestly he's only been with the canucks for a few days and you are already ripping him apart. Sometimes I question canucks fans sanity. Sighs. Stay classy cdc stay classy. Absent Canuck
I think its a little too early to try to gauge which way Benning will draft for us. He wants skill on the top 2 lines, size and grit on the bottom two and more physicality in general. Lets give the man some time to figure it out. PlayStation
It isnt all Benning to credit for the drafting, there is an entire staff of scouts and personnel that decide who is the best choice, and who to draft. I'm tired of hearing about this same old stuff, wait a few years and if drafting gets better for the Canucks, then we can assume Benning has helped improve it, but still the draft does take some luck. Kryten
Different eras, different teams. JB has likely changed his views from those periods as well. Like Tanikins, I would rather wait until after this draft before questioning or praising his judgement.
Losing With Pride
As long as we don't draft "off the board" like Calgary tends to do...

Bissurnette
Hodgson not doing too well? OK there. He had 44 points and was a -26 playing on Buffalo's first line. He often played with Girgensons and Stafford, those are 2 good players as well...

apollo
He's no better in drafting than what we had. Hextall would have been an improvement but not Benning. We've had a thread on this that compared Boston and canucks picks too
ForsbergTheGreat
You have to compare where each team picked in each draft year. Otherwise it's completely irrelevant to compare.

Undrafted
Would you care to share what past experience and proven track record of picks that Hextall has achieved? Has he ever even scouted? Hextall actually had a similar career path to Benning's: started off as a scout for the Flyers, promoted to Director of Player Personnel in 2002. Became AGM of the Kings in 2006 and big part of building the Kings into the juggernaut they are now. Edit: fixed typos.
