[Proposal] Playoff Push while Retooling

Recommended Posts

To Edmonton:

-Tanev

-6th Overall

To Vancouver:

-3rd Overall

Edmonton needs size for their top 6 (Nick Ritchie) and defense (Tanev). Canucks need a (ideally) big first line center (Leon Draisatil). It seems to work well for both teams, but feel free to criticize.

To Some Team:

-Hansen

To Vancouver:

-2015 3rd

Reason I only do a third is because of his ridiculous contract.

To Some Team:

-Booth

To Vancouver:

-2015 4th

Free Agency:

-Matt Niskanen ($6M for 2 years)

-Mike Santorelli ($1.5M for 1 year)

-Zack Kassian ($2M 2 years)

-Depth at all positions

FORWARDS
Alexandre Burrows ($4.500m) / Henrik Sedin ($7.000m) / Nicklas Jensen ($0.863m)
Daniel Sedin ($7.000m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Zack Kassian ($2.000m)
Chris Higgins ($2.500m) / Bo Horvat ($0.894m) / Mike Santorelli ($1.500m)
Shawn Matthias ($1.750m) / Brad Richardson ($1.150m) / Darren Archibald ($0.750m)
DEFENSEMEN
Alexander Edler ($5.000m) / Matt Niskanen ($6.000m)
Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m) / Kevin Bieksa ($4.600m)
Ryan Stanton ($0.550m) / Jason Garrison ($4.600m)
GOALTENDERS
Eddie Lack ($1.150m)
Jacob Markstrom ($1.200m)
BUYOUTS
Keith Ballard ($0.000m)
RETAINED SALARIES (1.13% of upper limit)
Roberto Luongo ($0.800m—15.00%)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $71,100,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,307,500; BONUSES: $850,000
CAP SPACE (20-man roster): $7,792,500

Don't worry Sedins will still play together on the PP. The thing is, Daniel's shot just isn't what it used to be. He can't be relied on for goal scoring anymore. Luckily, unlike say Heatley he has other abilities (e.g. playmaking). The first line sees your great play maker Henrik with the finisher Jensen. Burrows helps out defensively and adds some grit. Kesler covers the 2nd line's D and goal scoring. Daniel helps out with scoring and dishing the puck to Kesler. Kassian creates space and can setup Daniel & Kesler.

Edler gets the QB D-Man he missed from Erhoff in Niskanen (hence the overpayment) and hopefully Edler can begin to get back to his old self.

Nice mix of vets: Sedins, Kesler, Hamhuis, Bieksa, Edler, etc.

With younger guys: Kassian, Jensen, Horvat, Lack, etc.

Vancouver may be able to grab the 3rd or 4th spot in the Pacific Division. Not that impressive and the playoff run probably won't be that much either, but it's about retooling.

After a disappointing playoffs, at the 2015 draft Kesler & Garrison (Benning said he has no problem getting people to waive) can be moved out to make room for Horvat & Draistail to make the top 6, Gaunce to make the top 9 & Corrado can become Stanton's new partner. Mainly for D prospects I'd assume.

Draistail-Sedin-Jensen

Sedin-Horvat-Kassian

Higgins-Gaunce-Burrows

Matthias-Richardson-Archibald

^If Santorelli really impresses one of Higgins or Matthias can be moved out.

Edler-Niskanen

Hamhuis-Bieksa

Stanton-Corrado

Lack

Markstrom

^One will eventually take over and the other can ideally be dealt.

UFA's in their prime look for big, long term contracts. Why would niskanen sign for just two years after coming off a career year? He'll get more years somewhere else easily

This, Niskanen just had a career year. This is the most important contract that he will sign, 2 years is far too short a term. He will be looking for at least 5-6.

Ridiculous contract? $2.5 million for 3 more years for one of the leagues best bottom 6 players who has and can seamlessly slot in to the top 6.....

I'd say a decent/good 3rd liner......one of the league's best is pushing it.

Far from the Sutter, Bolland, Shaw, Bickell, Kelly, Boyle, Neil, etc.

The reason I'd want Draisaitl is because Henrik has 4 more years left. Draisaitl has good size and is a good playmaking center. Horvat is the good 2nd line, two way center (will replace Kesler).

Though they may be slower, you can put speedy wingers beside them (e.g. Shinkaruk)

I like Kassian's play making ability. I like Draisaitl but I still take Bennett over him.

Perferably I keep tanev and pick Nylander at 6. Either way you can't complain

Jensen Nylander/Bennett/Draisaitl Kassian

It would be nice to sign a veteran goalie for 4.5-5 mill. with that cap space for 2 years and let Lack work his way to a complete starter like Schneider did. (Hiller or Miller-I say take the cheaper of the two both can be Elite when on top of their games)... Then at the trade deadline hopefully Edlers value increases (can't get much worse) and they can pull off a deal with Buffalo for Markstorm and Edler for Ehrhoff
