Seattle Sea Lions?

Recommended Posts

Following the Oakland Seals/Califorinia Golden Seals name doesn't seem to be a good omen.

And don't they need a building first?

The Seattle Sea Lions: The NHL's next team?

Aaron Stern (@TheSternMan24) May. 30, 2014 11:24 AM

Rumors of potential NHL expansion are nothing new to the hockey world as almost every year we hear about a city that is looking at getting an NHL franchise.

The most recent expansion talks have been linked to Seattle. Although the NHL does not seem to have immediate plans to expand to Seattle, there are reports that a major investment group is trying to do just that.

Some are excited about the possibility of a team going to Seattle and have already created the team name and logo for fun. Matthew McElroy and Dylan Alexander have named them "The Seattle Sea Lions" and took a shot at designing the jerseys. Check it out:

Im excited about the posibility of seattle getting a team, with no arena yet it might be a while. Im also not sold on the sea lions, sounds like a little league team.

Seatle thunder is a good choice in my opinion. A team this close to vancouver would make for some fun games and a immediate intensity. A rivalry would be forged withen a few solid years!

The Supersonics leave Seattle to OKC and become the Thunder.. now you bring in a hockey team to Seattle and call them the Thunder too.. Don't like the idea.

I like the tower logo for the Sea Lions jersey for the shoulder. But not sold on the Sea Lions. The colors are too close to the Canucks too but at the same time very similar to the Seahawks.. Also.. Seahawks and Sea Lions.. a bit much.

Seattle Totems.

The Vancouver Canucks' rival in the old Western Hockey League. Many great NHL names played for and against the Totems. Their best player, Guyle Fielder, was the all-time leading scorer in that league and is third-highest in professional league point scoring (behind only Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe). They attempted to join the league twice before, but complications prevented them from doing so.

I did a mockup of what they could look like in today's NHL:

Great concept... The colors look way too close to the Dallas Stars jerseys though and the logo is quite similar to the Seattle Thunderbirds.

An NHL team in Seattle is contingent on an NBA team also coming to Seattle.

Considering that the money man behind the whole bid to bring the NBA/NHL back to Seattle just spent a cool $2Billion to buy the Clippers, I think the idea of an NHL team for Seattle is now dead, unless another multi-billionaire pops up willing to fund a new arena, and buy both NBA and NHL franchises.

That's not true, Ballmer was a minority interest in the Seattle Arena group, and there are other interested parties in bringing an NHL team, as well as new suitors to help Hansen get the NBA team. Hansen does have the exclusive rights to build an arena in Seattle though

Yes you're right he was/is a minority investor in the arena group to build the new arena, but there will be no arena if there isn't an NBA team calling it home first. The Memorandum of Understanding the group has with the City states that the NBA must be a confirmed tenant before the city will allow construction to begin.

Ballmer was the one trying to secure an NBA team to play there. Now with Ballmer out of the picture, there is no NBA team for the foreseeable future and hence quite possibly no arena as well. There is talk of redoing the MOU with the City, but it doesn't sound like city council is open to it:

Nobody really knows what will happen. Once Ballmer's purchase of the Clippers is approved, he might just pick up and bring them back to Seattle, but he's openly stated he will not move the team. Or there may be an NBA expansion franchise granted at some point, but someone else now has to step up to be the owner of the team. And ironically, Ballmer's purchase of the Clippers has just pushed the price to purchase an NBA team way up.

You're right that the MOU dictates an NBA team coming first, and for the time being there are none to be relocated and no expansion set. I believe the sale required Ballmer to keep the team in LA, and even if it didn't, he can make more money to recoup that massive price in LA than in Seattle. The council is also not going to re-negotiate the MOU to be hockey first, even though realistically it could be the easiest way to get a team in the city, to then attract an NBA team.

This will require Hansen and co to regroup, but is by no means a death sentence to the arena deal.
