(Proposal) Canucks Retool + Big UFA signings

Recommended Posts

Hey CDC,

Was just wondering what you think of my 2014-2015 season opening roster. I think this would be the best direction for the canucks, to retool by trading kesler and edler while staying competitive by paying up for some decent UFAs and letting a few young guys play.

1) Buyout Booth

2) Sign Kassian and Tanev to bridge contracts (Kass 1.75mill/year for 2 yrs, Tanev 2.75mill/yr for 2yrs)

3) Trade Kesler to PIT for D.Pouliot 1st rounder and 2nd rounder (Don't want Bennett or Sutter)

4) Trade Edler and lower draft pick to BOS for L.Eriksson and J.Caron (or someone who can play a 4th line roll that Benning likes)

5) Trade Hansen for cheaper depth/ picks (no sense in having a guy making 2.5mill on 4th line as some have suggested/posted)

5) Sign Stastny for 2-3 years at 6-6.5million per (overpay a bit if necessary as he's just a stopgap while remaining playoff bound) (I believe hes looking for big money or he would stay in Colorado

6) Sign Hiller for 2 years at 5-5.5mill per (Lack will be good but ease him into starting role and they can still split time) Hiller will be undisputed no1 unless he falters. Let Markstrom play more in AHL and trade him possibly.

7) Sign Niskanen for 3-5 years at 4.5-5mill per to replace Edler

Lineup:

D.Sedin H.Sedin Eriksson

Burrows Stastny Jensen

Higgins Horvat Kassian

Richardson Matthias Caron

Sestito Dalpe

Hamhuis Bieksa

Pouliot Niskanen

Garrison Tanev

Stanton

Hiller Lack

CAP approx $70,196,444 including the $800,000 from Luu and $275,000 for burying Markstrom

Another option is if Kesler is happy to stay here for another run, then no need to sign Stastny and Stanton will slot into Pouliot's spot.

I feel this team will at least make the playoffs, might not be Stanley cup contenders anymore but we can keep building on it year after year espec with this years draft (6th overall pick). Hiller and Lack will provide stability in net. Eriksson's done well with the Sedins internationally and Burrows barring injures/bad luck should at least hit 20 goals. All while Horvat Jensen Kassian Pouliot Tanev develop and gain more experience.

Let me know your opinion and anything you would change in this proposal. Thanks!

GO CANUCKS GO!

not overly bad just too many trades for 1 offseason

I don't think its out of the question, Kesler and Edler have been rumoured for awhile. I'd be betting Benning would be open to even more trades if they make sense, as the Hansen trade i proposed is just to clear cap and get something out of a decent 3rd liner. Could use chicago's offseason after winning their cup in 2010 as an example where they unloaded a bunch of players like buff versteeg ladd etc, given it was a different circumstance but trades are trades.

Pouliot is going to be coming off shoulder surgery and might not even be ready for the start of the season. So I wouldn't do that Kesler deal. Niskanen will command at least 5 million a year.

Ohh, I did not know that, he'd still be a good prospect to have though + 2 draft picks. What players are you looking for in a kesler deal? or you prefer to keep him?

Edit: I'd do Niskanen for 5mill for 3, maybe 4 years to replace Edler's production and a right handed shot to boot. I'd doubt Boyle would sign here as that's the other d-man Id be interested in.

Yeah and I don't think Pouliot is ready to jump in right away. I would prefer Kesler stays, but if he wants to go in a trade with Pittsburgh, I'd do something like Pouliot, Sundqvist (big swedish center has insane skill) and a 2nd round pick. Quality over quantity.

I would try for Dan Boyle as well. Keep Edler if we sign Boyle.

Ah id say we could push for Pouliot Sundqvist (drafted in 3rd round) and a 1st rounder (I guess I value Kes more or you value Sundqvist highly). I'd be pretty surprised if Boyle were to sign with us, i'd say he'd want to go to a team with a very good chance of contending for the cup. I would still trade Edler though as he would bring more value in a trade then say Garrison. No point in keeping Edler around if Boyle's just going to retire in a couple years even if he signs with us.
