[Proposal] Quickest Way to Rip off a Bandaid and Rebuild

Recommended Posts

Before you read this. It is a perfect world where the rumours were true and one person waives his NTC. As it's about the only way this happens.

Edler is asked to waive to the Islanders and accepts.

(Credit Elvis for the original idea)

Vancouver trades

Edler

Markstrom

Hansen

Gaunce

2nd round pick 2014

3rd round pick 2014

5th round pick 2014

Islanders trade

Ryan Strome

5th overall pick 2014.

The theory is that with Edler/Hansen it makes the Islanders and their brand new building with a healthy Tavares and a hungry Halak a much better team in the Eastern Conference. Hansen would immediately become one of the better full time bottom 6 players in the east and would greatly help a confused and lack luster PK

Edler gives them a much more viable top 4 while paired with Hamonic and regardless of what Heffy might say does indeed give them a solid D man of the type they haven't had in a while. And I do believe Edler would be a serious threat on the blueline in the East

Gaunce gives them that potential 2C or obvious 3C that they need by losing Strome.

2nd 3rd and 5th are all early picks giving the Isles something to walk home with in the draft this season.

Strome becomes a potential 1st line C for the team.

5th overall gives us the 5th and 6th in this years draft.

Now, the Rumour

Kesler is asked to waive and accepts.

Vancouver trades

Ryan Kesler

6th round pick 2014

7th round pick 2014

Ducks Trade

10th overall 2014

24th overall 2014

2nd round pick 2014 (Toronto)

Shea Theodore

The theory is that Kesler makes the Ducks the immediate threat in the West. There is absolutely no question a group of centers like Getzlaf Cogliano Kesler Bonino Perrault and rookie/prospect Rakell makes the Ducks probably the top contender in the West down the middle

They give up 3 overall picks in the first 2 rounds representing some significant early round picks but have the depth of prospects and the youth on all positions to make this edible for a chance to win it all over the next 2 seasons.

Vancouver would get Shea Theodore representing a larger, rangier and more mobile offensive D man of the type the organization doesn't have.

Vancouver would also net the 10th and 24th pick in the 1st round as well as Toronto's 2nd round pick at # 38.

Vancouver would also net $10.25 million in cap space.

Vancouver would now hold the

5th overall pick in 2014

6th overall pick in 2014

10th overall pick in 2014

24th overall pick in 2014

2nd round pick #38 in 2014

Before you jump on this for whatever reason and the future of the team in the short term. There is little or any way the team is competitive in the short term without completely mortgaging the future. This is all about a rebuild without gutting our depth to any significant degree.

I am also aware of how poor this leaves the team for 2014/2015 but we also net over $10 million in cap space and can stop gap for the season if needed.

This is, I believe a fast quick and easy way to rebuild the team with a serious eye at the future. From here any pick or 2 + a player like Tanev/Garrison etc (example only) can be traded up to Florida for the 1st overall while still leaving us with a minimum of 1 or a maximum of 2 picks in the top 10 + the 1st overall

Just a theory, discussion or what if. Not as crazy as some not as bad as many I have written I think.

Thoughts?

I like it. With those moves we'll be in contention in 2-3 years, 4 at most.

5th: Michael Dal Colle

6th: Haydn Fleury

10th: Jake Virtanen

24th: Julius Honka

Dal Colle - Strome - Virtanen

Shinkaruk - Horvat - Kassian

Fox - Gaunce - Jensen

Lain - Cassels - Archibald

Honka - Fleury

Cederholm - Tanev

Stanton - J. Subban

Lack

The Islanders rob us in that deal. Take out some picks...

I don't think they do really. We give up some later picks for a potential 1a center and a top 5 pick for some picks a 3rd line player and two prospects.

The winner of any trade is the one that gets the best players they say.

A 1a center and a choice of MDC Draisatl Bennett Reinhart in the top 5 (Ekblad doesn't get past Buffalo) is a solid deal for some prospects picks and a 3 rd line player

I think we give up too many picks, but really like the framework of the deal. Who would u sign as our other goalie??

Edler

Markstrom

Hansen

2nd round pick 2014

Islanders trade

Ryan Strome

5th overall pick 2014.

That should be fair. IMO

Right now, 100% they get the better player in Edler, defensemen are harder to develop and harder to find good ones.

Strome could be a beast or turn into a 2c or even a good 3c.

5 pick in not a great draft? Could turn out or bust.

They also badly need to win.

They are a budget team, great cap hit for Dman signed long term...

This is fairly even as well. With giving up Markstrom maybe trade for a late first (25th-29th) and draft Demko?

Your classic quantity for quality trade with 7 pieces going to the Isles. The Isles after the 1st round have 7 picks in the next 3 rounds. They don't really have any use for the picks you are trading, they already have a solid prospect pool. In fact the talk is of the Isles packing their own picks and moving up.

Now lets examine the rest of the pieces. Hansen is not a player that the Isles need, especially not for that salary. The Isles have enough middle 6 forwards and cheap depth to fill out their roster. They could run with a 3rd line of Grabner-Nielsen-Clutterbuck, which is more than adequate.

Gaunce is redundant for the Isles. In terms of center depth on their roster they have, Tavares, Nelson, Nielsen. In their prospect pool there is Strome and Anders Lee, both of whom are NHL ready. The last thing the Isles need is another center prospect, Strome will be playing wing next season. The Canucks could use Gaunce much more than the Isles could, he could fit in nicely on the 3rd line.

Markstrom will be valued as a backup goalie. If the Isles really liked him they would offer one of their 4 second round picks in the next two drafts for him. Goalies tend to be undervalued and the Isles are committed to Halak.

Edler is the only piece I see the Isles being interested in and I think you should keep the deal simple. Its hard enough to evaluate one player's value when you throw in like 5 pieces on top of that. Not to mention when have we ever seen in a 5 for 1 deal or in this case 7 for 2. Its just not very realistic and if I were the Isles and I was packaging the 1st and Strome, I would be expecting an elite player back not a struggling Edler.

lol

just dumb quantity for quality deals

if someone came up to us and asked for the 6th + horvat for quantity, we'd laugh.

it's not fair value, just dumb.

The idea is fantastic but it only works in theory.

It is very rare that so many pieces are being moved. This isn't NHL 14 where you can just pile on assets with low values to get high value assets.

I think a trade with the Islanders could be made to move up to 5 to secure a top 5 ranked pick in this draft.

To NYI

1st Round Pick #6

Jannik Hansen

To Vancouver

1st Round Pick #5

The Islanders would probably bite on that.

Vancouver selects Micheal Dal Colle 5th overall

yeah a Dman that plays no defense, a third liner, a goalie that couldn't make the Panthers and a mere second round pick is "fairly even" for a top prospect and a top five pick. I want whatever it is that you're smoking.
