Sam Bennett had no problem scoring goals or showing his gritty side this past season with the Ontario Hockey Leagues Kingston Frontenacs. The same cant be said for one element of fitness testing at the NHL Scouting Combine in Toronto.

According to a report from The Canadian Press, the 17-year-old Bennett, who had 91 points in 57 regular season games for Kingston and is the top-ranked North American skater heading into the June NHL Draft, couldnt do a single pull-up during Saturdays fitness testing.

I was definitely disappointed with myself, Bennett said, as per Canadian Press. I was wanting to do the best I can in every test. But, I guess, ultimately games arent won or lost if you can do a pull-up in the gym.

I think (what sets me apart) really just a combination of my hockey sense along with my compete level I think I compete as hard, if not harder, than anyone else.

A left-shooting center, it seems Bennett still has some growing to do. He stands at 60″ and weighs 178 pounds, but doesnt turn 18 years old until June 20 seven days before the first round of the draft. But the way he plays the game, the compete level as he called it, is an element of his game scouts seem to heavily picked up on.

He plays the kind of game you think cannot be sustained for a whole season because its a high-energy game and compete game at all ends of the ice, said NHL Central Scoutings David Gregory, as per Bennetts profile at NHL.com.

He ends up playing that game for the whole year and has led his team. He just never stops, and put that with the skill package he has and how well he thinks the game, hes pretty much a top-notch player.

Well I guess he's somewhat right that being able to do a pull up or not won't dictate if you can win or not. But at the same time, not being able to do a pull up - not even one! - is concerning to an extent for any team. Pull ups reveal a lot about a persons physical health/abilities/weaknesses.

As Craig Button said look at the glass half full, you know there is a lot of room for improvement and growth physically. If Bennett can be so good already but not physically matured, imagine when he has had proper training and is fully matured. He will be a force to be reckoned with.

This is getting overblown

Give him a couple of summers working with Gary Roberts. I agree with the above point regarding there being room for improvement.

If I was a GM, I'd be asking about it, but as long as he has a plan in place to improve this aspect of his development, or is willing to work with the team to develop one, I wouldn't hold it against the kid.

It doesn't matter. Everyone knew Bennett was not NHL ready, and needed some work. These guys are still in kids bodies. A lot of these guys don't do any of this, in their normal routine. Most of what they do in the combine, may be new to them.

Someone else mentioned it as well, this only means he has a lot more room to grow.

hopefully, he'll learn from this, and bulk up soon. Kyle Turris was the same when he was drafted, and never did anything in 3 years, and still looked like a twig, still kind of does.

100% true.

But still, a 17 year old athlete that can't do one pull-up? That is a little bit amusing.

I'm by no means athletic and weigh around 200lbs, and I can still do 10 give or take a few.

This just shows that these kids need to hire personal trainers to at least show them how to work out properly I mean honestly this sounds like he just didn't work out the right muscles which most people do when they don't have proper guidance.

Which probably is the case because you don't really use your 'pull muscles' so to speak in the game of hockey.

Doubt it

What did the other players do? Really though unless I am more impressive than I knew I don't think 10 pull ups is anything special. Although unlike the other poster I was 150 pounds at 18 and could manage 20 pull ups which was 2nd best in my class.

I can only assume he was tired because this doesn't seem hard at all
