DownUndaCanuck
Looks like Ekblad is NHL ready and our "solid D core" could use some youth and a shakeup, but more importantly, a future #1 defenceman. Watching one Seabrook-Keith and Doughty lift their teams to the Cup final just stresses the urgency for a Norris-caliber defenceman, and Ekblad could easily be that guy. Of course, this team still needs a top-6 forward, and right now we have a plethora of top-4 defencemen at our disposal. Trade 1: To FLA - 6th overall, Hansen/Burrows (if Burrows waives) and Stanton (Florida needs forwards, they have a lot of UFAs right now and especially need forwards who know how to play defence). Plus they can draft a good young forward and get defensive depth. We have a great rapport with Florida which we should use to our advantage. To VAN - 1st overall Draft Ekblad. Trade 2: To DET - Kesler and Edler Brings Kesler back to his hometown, Detroit get a big swedish defenceman they've coveted for years who can play with Kronvall and a center who lets them win now, not in the future as Sheahan would To VAN - Nyquist and Sheahan, plus a 2nd or 3rd rounder to even it up The Canucks get to start building a new core that will peak in about 5 years time when the big Californian teams, Boston, Pittsburgh and Chicago are on the down-slide. This team may not win many games next season, but with a core revolving around a potential future Norris defenceman in Ekblad, future top-20 if not top-10 D-men in Tanev and Corrado, big strong and skilled offensive and defensive centers like Sheahan, Horvat, Gaunce and Matthias, big wingers like Kassian and Jensen and highly skilled wingers like Nyquist and Shinkaruk with two young great goalies, this team will be great in about 3-5 years. All the while, veterans to groom them and play alongside them until they peak. We'll have Hamhuis and Bieksa on the blueline for a while to complement and compose our young defencemen, and veterans up front like the Sedins, Higgins, Richardson and Santorelli to help their transition as we move away from this older core and into the newer, younger core. Sign a veteran goalie cheap to backup Lack and we're set to win a cup in about 3-5 years.
Absent Canuck
I like it Good proposal +1 I target Reinhart rather than Ekblad though
Junkyard Dog
I like it Good proposal +1 I target Reinhart rather than Ekblad though Sam would instantly be a fan favorite but we would have an ongoing argument on whether or not we should of drafted Ekblad. Tough to say. I would chose sam because we would need someone to step in right away to replace Kesler and it would give us a 1 2 punch with Bo as well. Cassels/Gaunce could potentially be our 3rd line C in the future. Our future down the middle would be secure for sure.

Canuck Surfer
How does Detroit take on $8 or $10 mill in cap?
DownUndaCanuck
Florida wont want scraps for 1st not happening theyd want more They're essentially getting Hansen or Burrows (top-9 forward), Virtanen/Ritchie/Dal Colle/Nylander and Stanton for Ekblad. The Panthers seriously lack depth, this trade gives them that, plus it includes young pieces that fit around their current "core". If they want more, throw them a 2nd or 3rd round pick but Burrows and/or Hansen and Stanton should easily make up the difference between 1st and 6th overall. How does Detroit take on $8 or $10 mill in cap? The Red Wings have 20 million in cap space right now, if they take on Kesler/Edler and lose Sheahan/Nyquist they'll have around 11M left. All they really need to do is sign DeKyser (3-4M), let Quincey go (Edler takes his spot), Tatar (2-3M) and then make decisions on Bertuzzi, Alfredsson, Legwand, Samuelsson and Cleary. Those forwards are all getting older and probably won't all re-sign. Legwand could be had for 3-4M as could Alfredsson, let the others walk or sign Cleary for around 1M or less and they all fit in quite comfortably. An instant playoff threat. canuckfan_21
Overall I don't mind the proposals although I think Florida would want something a bit more. I think you're being pretty optimistic though that Tanev and Corrado are both gonna be top 20, let alone top 10, defencemen in the NHL
Shinkaruk_9
Having centre depth is what is very important these days. Look at the Kings, they have a plethora of centres. Draft Reinhart. Local kid, our centre problems are fixed and next year we can trade up and draft Kylingston...that would be one hell of a team to compete with in the future. I never understood the logic that some have that 3rd line talent can be packaged for potential franchise players. It would be like the Canucks trading Kesler for bottom 6 scoring depth. Or the Blackhawks years back trading the 1st overall Patrick Kane pick for Sam Gagner, a 3rd liner, and a 3rd pair defenseman just to address the depth issue. Logic says draft the potential franchise player and address the depth issue by signing FA's or making small logical trades for them by giving up logical prices. If they want someone like Stanton trade a mid round draft pick or another lousy prospect. You just don't give up 1st overall picks to get your hands on players like Stanton and Hansen. Master Mind
No way Florida takes that deal. They would want much more for a #1 overall pick. Detroit needs youth in their lineup. I think Nyquist is untouchable at this point.
