Quantity for Quality proposals reversed. How's it now?

Recommended Posts

Looking at some recent proposals, let's do some role reversal.

To FLA - 6th overall, Hansen/Burrows (if Burrows waives) and Stanton

To VAN - 1st overall

Reversed

To VAN - 17th overall, JT Brown, Barberio

To TBL - 6th overall.

--

To NYI: Edler, Markstrom, Hansen, Gaunce, 2nd + 3rd + 5th

To Van: Ryan Strome, 5th overall pick 2014.

Reversed

To Van: Green, Grubauer, Laich, Stephenson, 2nd + 3rd + 5th

To NYI: Bo Horvat, 6th overall pick 2014 + 2nd round pick.

--

To WPG: Markstrom, 2nd round pick, booth 50% retained, Dalpe

To Van: 9th overall

Reversed

To Van: Hutchinson, 2nd round pick, setoguchi rights, tangradi

To WPG: 6th overall

Edit: Would any of you seriously do these trades?

Since Tallon and ownership stated they WANT to be competitive now....yes that deal would probably get done

Seeing as how Snow once offered EVERY pick in a draft to move up what, 2 spots? and has dozens of questionable signings/trades and drafts under his belt as well as a new building an an owner demanding they be competitive now...ya that deal could probably get done. But the more likely scenario is Reinhart coming back as opposed to Strome

To Van: 9th overall

That's stupid on every level, not sure who made that proposal

Reversed

To Van: Hutchinson, 2nd round pick, setoguchi rights, tangradi

To WPG: 6th overall

Now, the thing is about the Fla and NYI trades is that ownership has given the green light in Florida to spend to the cap and be competitive NOW. Tallon will indeed do that. Any trade that keeps a top 10 pick in their hands AND gets them a solid player/players that can help them compete is most likely getting done

The Isles NEED to be competitive as it is Snows death knell in management if they give the Sabres a top 5 or top 10 pick next season. They have a new building and a young and hungry team, Snow has also said he'd trade that pick for help on the roster where needed. Snow also has done SO many questionable things, the least of which is Yashin and then...seeking to sign Yashin again after buying him out.

While YOU may scoff at some of these trades and thumb your nose up Tom, these GMs have teams with a literal decade of failure and more than a few variables dictating that trades could and most likely will be done.

These are trades made with the roster and the players we have in an attempt to make their team better in the knowledge that they HAVE to compete. Meaning more picks or prospects won't help them. In the case of the ISles trade extra picks in the 2nd 3rd and 5th rounds can easily be packaged up and moved for roster help now or prospects/players in positions they need to shore up, that is why quantity with a smattering of quality is still valuable.

This forum has the literal worst time accepting prospects not in this league and not even in the AHL have little value outside of potential. It has an ever harder time accepting that bad deals are made all the time, even in the face of everything that has happened to this org in the last 2 seasons.

While a fan might not see value in a trade, a GM might. This is why they are GMs and this is why most proposals are clearly written with the "if everything falls in to place" addendum at the top of the page.

This argument is weak, because it is based on the notion that all other variables are pre-existing, in precisely the same way.

Why stop there? Why not consider the moves we would make if ManchesterfreekinUnited were located in Newton?! WOULD Beckham commute from Cloverdale?!

Flor is not Van as a hockey market, & the sunbelt will never don mukluks. Trade-talk is mostly speculative fantasizing; but apples & oranges should stay on their respective trees.

If they're in a situation where they need to get to the playoffs, I'm fairly convinced strome and a top five pick can pull better win now players than edler and Hansen.

Meh, I'll never get through.

I am not arguing that Tom,

But we are not another team and we are trying to address what WE can give while still being competitive, not what a dozen other teams can do.

There are to many variables for some of these to be turned down.

"WOULD Beckham commute from Cloverdale?!'

On a short term, no longer a great player but a solid veteran, contract why not? :)

I won't argue values of trade material but Warhippy is right about one thing, Garth Snow has done stupid things and is still a gm and his time is running out. Talon, other than the Chicago contract fiasco, seems to be a decent gm.

Did someone really think Edler, Hansen and a pick or Markstrom would get us a prospect as good as Ryan Strome?

Man I wish I lived in that la-la land.

Since when is a -39 player considered a "win now" player? Just because they aren't young doesn't mean they're "win now". Not talking about Kesler here, because he obviously is a win now guy but more so the other common names in trade proposals.

Yes, & someone thought Pha9, Clarkeson & #81 Dumplin' were worth 20 mill 'til eternity.

Apparently impossible is nothing.
