ckamo
What are you babbling on about? He got a 4 month complete suspension from all soccer related activities and a 9 game international suspension that could last for a lot longer. He's going to miss the Copa America Cup next year, that's huge.Dan Squizzatto pointed out that it's "official" matches too, so Uraguay won't be able to burn the 9 games off using friendlies. He won't be able to train with his team or even enter the stadium during games. It's a big deal for a guy who makes his living off the sport...
Amish Rake Fighter
To add to your point, the 4 month ban apparently would result in 9 missed EPL games so it's really an 18 game suspension. In short, he's getting punished in more ways than one. Missing the Copa America Cup is going to really sting too, it's the biggest thing next to the World Cup in South America. In some ways it's actually bigger because of the built in (often bloody) rivalries and more SA teams participating. Kakanucks
edit: The player Luis Suárez is to be suspended for nine (9) official matches. The first match of this suspension is to be served in the upcoming FIFA World Cup™ fixture between Colombia and Uruguay on 28 June 2014. The remaining match suspensions shall be served in Uruguay’s next FIFA World Cup match(es), as long as the team qualifies, and/or in the representative team’s subsequent official matches in accordance with art. 38 par. 2a) of the FDC. http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/y=2014/m=6/news=luis-suarez-suspended-for-nine-matches-and-banned-for-four-months-from-2386354.html Actually can someone please clarify the bolded part? I'm a bit confused whether this includes qualifers for WC 2022 or not. double edit: nevermind....i read that wrong.....i thought it meant WC 2022 when it said next FIFA WC match....I finally realized it meant if they make it out again columbia..... MAJOR BRAIN FART THERE.......nothing to see here.....
g_bassi13
3 teams from north America qualifying for the Round of 16 looks great on CONCACAF (though Honduras blew chunks out there, lol). I would go so far as to predict both the US and Costa Rica move into the quarters after beating Belgium and Greece. US match will be a real tight one. One team looks really good going while the other doesn't. Poor showing from the American side today. But nothing beats our disgraceful performance this year. Korea gave us false hope in that draw aganst Russia. No attack, no defending, no communication. With Park leading the pack, it's clear that more european leaguers does not mean beter footballers. Belgium has a talented squad sure, but they came out of a weak group, not looking particularly impressive. Sure the US has a very poor match today, but i think overall they've shown they have what it takes to at least potentially eek out another victory. Hate to just repeat the media poo pooing during the team selection announcement, but not having Donovan out there sucks. especially with Altidore out. Tornado
9 out of 9 points. A win despite playing a half with a man down. Played Algeria and Russia, 2 ultra defensive sides (both starting with 5 defenders), and won both games. Sure, we didn't play impressive, but what team would if you play 2 games against ultra defensive teams, and one game half with a man down? Courtois looked solid today in goal. USA is next. BTW a few little facts for you USA-fans: - Belgium has never lost a match with Thibaut Courtois in goal. - This is the first time in history Belgium wins their 3 group matches at a World Cup. - Belgium has not lost in 13 official games (10 qualifiers + 3 group matches), also a record for Belgium (last record was 11 matches). Apple Juice
Got the result I was looking for in the Germany game but if only Portugal could've scored more, which I knew wasn't going to happen, then I would've been more than happy to have seen USA out. Being in form for the qualifiers plays a factor in the group stages, not the knockouts. Korea was dreadful going in and they paid the price. Japan was AMAZING going in and they got wrecked. USA.... made Klinsmann look like Jesus, and now the team looks okay going into the next match. I still think Belgium will win, but yeah.... they benefited from a weak group. That could be good or bad, because they can ride that all the way through (Some of Belgium's starters took some rest today, while Team USA is starting to look exhausted). viking mama
7 games for his first incident 10 games for his 2nd incident 9 games for his 3rd incident feel free to try to justify how this happens he should of been banned for years like someone else said in this thread because he is a star they won't do that seems like they follow the same NHL rules of protecting their stars I totally believe what you are saying... but even the NHL sees missing play-off games as being more punitive than missing pre-season or regular season games. Wasn't this suspension for 9 international games (current 2014 Wold Cup games included, even if Uraguay appeals)...& 4 months....which will be affecting his league games, as well? He was also fined. These punishments make Suarez's suspension more punitive (especially financially), than you have indicated. He is also banned from even entering the stadiums were Uraguay will be playing for this World Cup & for the next 4 months. "...The player Luis Suárez is banned from taking part in any kind of football-related activity (administrative, sports or any other) for a period of four (4) months in accordance with art. 22 of the FDC." "...The player Luis Suárez is ordered to pay a fine in the amount of CHF 100,000." (26 jun 2014) media release /FIFA .com
viking mama
The reality is that Suarez should be required... to get some psychological-counselling before his reinstatement. This wasnt a defensive act,... or another player putting a foreign object into his mouth....nor was he biting a piece of equipment....this was clearly unsportsman-like aggression on an un-suspecting opponent. His blind-side bite was a violent attack & an inexcuseable foul. The fact that Suarez has done this 3 times already, makes it all the more alarming. Where was FIFA's call for the medical or psychological assessment of Suarez's motivations for behavior like that? Fines & supensions, alone,.... just dont seem to be working for him. Master Mind
Did anyone else notice the laser that was being pointed at the Russian goalkeeper's face? Happened as Algeria was taking their corner kick, which they scored on. Hope the laser didn't distract him. I also don't like how players can waste time by kicking the ball away when it's supposed to be a throw in. Was at the beginning of stoppage time, and sure the Algerian player got a yellow card for it, but he still wasted at least a minute, and the ref should add an additional minute to stoppage time. Instead Russia lost out on some valuable time.
