this game was actually quite boring, i had it on the background and did chores for most of the time.

congrats costa rica, but u ain't getting past netherlands haha

All games are quite boring. A team will score a last minute goal and then everyone thinks the game was exciting. Clearly not the case.

agree.. most games are boring other than a few goals here and there... i actually love seeing players dive more.. got to admit alot of hardcore fans though, cheering the whole game even if it's 0-0 or 1-0 score..

the games don't have to be high scoring to be entertaining, I just found this game particularly boring because there weren't much grade A chances, and it was just more of running around giving the ball away both ways

not a lot of quality on either team, and certainly zero creativity from the Greek side. difficult to enjoy it for me.

i guess i understand why some people don't find the sport enjoyable, could just be a different strokes thing. i certainly don't find hockey enjoyable, 9 games out of 10. certainly wouldn't watch NHL if it weren't for the Canucks--and even they are becoming less and less enjoyable with each passing year

I understand that soccer is a very popular sport and that this World Cup has been one of the more exciting ones in recent memory and I'm not here to troll, but to me it's just boring. I don't care how many goals are scored or how many great saves happen.

I do watch some games, because basically there is nothing else on at the time and I'm also in pools(I love to bet on sports) and I'll admit I was into a few games, but one World Cup is over I won't watch another soccer game until probably Euro Cup and that includes Whitecaps games.

I can agree with that big time.

First off, this franchise feels like nothing more than a cash grab to me. Unreal prices, new uniforms every other year, pointlesss heritage "classics", etc. Mostly though, it's the fanbase. Really noticing the last few years why we are so hated.

As far as soccer goes, I've really gotten into it for the last few years or so, especially since the Caps jumped into the MLS. It's a great sport, extremely entertaining at times, sometimes boring. The atmosphere is what gets me. Soooo fun to see the fans go apesh1t over every opportunity.

The diving though.... man that stuff's disgusting.

That Costa Rica goal was just pathetic. The Greece keeper made no effort to save it.

The game was pretty boring I found. Neither team is that great. Greece with the extra man for all of extra time and still couldn't get a goal. Wasn't surprised at all that Gekas didn't score on his penalty kick.

Also, what was up with the Greek coach after extra time? I saw he got thrown out, seems like odd timing though as there was no play going on.

It might be because the games tend to become more defensive in the knockout stages. Weaker teams would want penalties, and I don't blame them. So they park the bus. It's probably the only big sport that can be settled in such a way, so if someone randomly starts watching the World Cup at the knockout stages, he has already screwed himself over.

I think it also has to do with offense picking up a lot faster than defence. The defending takes a couple of real games for the chemistry to really pick up.

Yeah, I found some of the recent ceremonies and hockey "classics" to be totally trite. The very idea of even calling these events 'classic' anything seems cynical to me.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I also found it totally cynical how Gillis retired three shirts, and put five names in the Ring of Honour in his tenure. I was at my most impressionable in '94. Loved the team, stood in a line for hours to get autographs, etc., but I couldn't help but roll my eyes at the idea of needing to immortalize some of those names in the building. It all seemed so short sighted and devoted entirely to generating culture and revenue.

I'm sure plenty of soccer teams do equivalent things, but I like how culture is generally created organically, through (legitimate) tradition, or rivalries and fans, not through a few suits trying to generate revenue by TELLING fans that something is, or should be, a tradition.

yeah, you're probably right

I don't necessarily think that low scoring games are boring.

I'm not really sure though, as I'm Dutch and was watching the Netherlands game standing up almost the whole game. It wasn't boring at all for me. I know, I know much of that excitement was placed in the final 10 minutes but it was a great game.

I couldn't say how that game was as a regular viewer though.

You're raising a pretty good point, IMO.

If you're a Chelsea supporter and they draw 0-0 or 1-1 against Notthingham Forest, then yes, a low scoring game would not only be boring, but also disappointing.

But if you're a Nottingham Forest supporter and you draw Chelsea 0-0, that would be cause for a parade

If you aren't impressed with the technical aspects of the game, and you have no emotional allegiances to a specific club or nation, then of course a game without lots of spectacle would be boring, because for most others, the spectacle is the technical or emotional aspect itself.

(if that makes sense)

I think that tactics play a role in how enjoyable / entertaining it is to watch a match. Under mancini, espcially his last season, city was not that enjoyable to watch; where as this past season under pellegrini the matches were very enjoyable to watch. The squad was almost the same just the tactics were different.

I also think it's more fun to watch a team that has great support, songs/chants etc. helps add to the atmosphere.

It seems whenever I tune in late to games the goals come. I'm glad France won, hopefully Germany gets through this afternoon and then France knocks them out.

I've only been to two Whitecaps games. The first one I won the tickets so I had "good" seats. It was one of the most boring games I have ever seen in my entire life. A Sunday pub team would have been more enjoyable. The second time was this season, my parents were visiting from England so we went and sat (stood) in the chanting bit. It was brilliant! Though it was a cup game and half of the stadium emptied at full time which was strange.

I love the singing atmosphere in football. I'm so glad there is no vuvuzela crap at this World Cup (I did see one early on in the tournament when the camera panned the crowed. ugh), that really ruined the last WC for me.
