1 dead, 3 injured in Seattle Pacific University shooting

Jun 05, 2014 9:41 PM ET

The Associated Press

A Seattle hospital spokeswoman says one man in his 20s has died and a woman is critically injured after a shooting Thursday afternoon on the campus of Seattle Pacific University.

Two other people are less seriously hurt. Police say a suspect is in custody.

Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Gregg had no additional information on the young man who died. She says a 20-year-old woman is in surgery with critical injuries while a 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old man are in satisfactory condition.

Gregg says the hospital is not expecting any more injured people from the shooting.

It wasn't clear whether the suspected gunman was injured.

The university posted online that "the campus is in lockdown due to a shooting near Otto Miller Hall."

Police say SWAT officers continue to clear buildings on campus.

About 4,270 students attend the private Christian university, located in a residential neighborhood about 10 minutes from downtown Seattle.

The incident follows a spate of recent shootings on or near college campuses.

Last month, according to police, Elliot Rodger killed six people and injured seven before turning his gun on himself in a rampage in Isla Vista, California, near two universities.

Seven people were killed and three injured when a 43-year-old former student opened fire at a tiny Christian school, Oikos University, in Oakland, California, in 2012. A gunman killed five people and injured 18 when he opened fire in a Northern Illinois University lecture hall in 2008.

In 2007, 32 people were fatally shot in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia before the gunman, Seung-Hui Cho, killed himself.

Shootings are almost a weekly occurrence now ... sad commentary on our society.

What's shocking me the most is the lack of response from some people, I mean they're like yeah it's tragic and all but it happens so often some responses I got are "Another one?", Whereas before there'd be more of an "oh my ......", sort of a defeated response.

The fact that public shootings are becoming somewhat of a norm is very scary

The publication of the shootings doesn't help either. If someone is really hurt and thinking of possibly expressing their hate and frustration, and they see that the point (their story) will get across via the media, they may be more tempted to perform a shooting. Obviously it's a very select few who would actually have the capability to do a shooting, but my point still stands.

To reiterate.

One guy fails to blow up a plane with a shoe.

The US institutes changes overnight and air travel is changed overnight

Over 100 high school age or younger students killed by guns in the last decade and almost as many or more college students; and in most cases the US relaxes gun laws.

REALLY puts things in to perspective right?

The sweetest irony is that the US was founded on the principle that those in power would not and could not be bought nor lord that power over the masses.

Well....

The murder rate hit its highs between 1974 and 1995. It has been on a steady downward slide since then even as population levels increase. Sad commentary on how the news spreads fear rather than information.

People are desensitized to it because the American media is so saturated with weeks and months of non stop coverage of every mass shooting. You'd never know that despite gun violence being ridiculously high compared to other first world nations, gun violence in the US is getting better (consistently violent crime in the US has dropped over the last three decades), thanks to non-stop media coverage that helps the overly influenced be utterly paranoid of guns. Which likely explains why there are so many more paranoid non-gun owners than gun owners.

Dunno if you're joking or not. There's almost 10,000 gun related deaths per year in the states. Weekly? Try hourly. The hell are you smoking.

Sure, overall violent crime rate is dropping, but school shootings are on the rise, big time:

Either there is a record keeping issue, or schools are more and more targeted.

Has anyone broken down the "10,000" count I keep hearing? How many are murders? How many are in self-defense? How many are done by the police? How many suicides? How many accidental homicides? Just food for thought.

Two example of shootings that were stopped by armed personnel. Did the other schools have armed personnel in their schools? I don't believe so. Just more food for thought.

But presumably, these guards are highly trained for their jobs. Something of which most citizens in the US aren't.

And you guys are calling for guns?!

Wouldn't these two examples strengthen the idea of having stronger police and military presence?

People saying to ban guns, you should realize that will only work for so long before someone finds a way around the restrictions. the best thing is proper education, training, and better police and/ or army presence. I would hope that military wasn't needed but sometime the police need to be policed too. (creates the problem of who polices the military). Or completely remove guns entirely, we've clearly shown we can't handle them anyways.
