[Report] Rutherford to be announced as Pens GM

Recommended Posts

Jimmy's days of effectiveness may be winding down .. he will probably be the mouthpiece for a dysfunctional ownership group .. yeah .. I am looking at you, Mario, ya big turd! .. :)

Geez, Jimmy's last several years in Carolina were pretty brutal. Find that choice hard to believe.

That name sounds familiar. Was he the old GM of Carolina? If so then bringing in a GM with a cup wring is a good idea. No reason to fire a GM who's won it for one who hasn't.

Why, is that how GM's win, by winning the cup previously? Personally I think Rutherford has been winding down and spinning his wheels for a while now but he does have a lot of experience in that neck of the woods.

Was never a fan of Rutherford. His decision to trade for Staal and subsequently overpay him cost that franchise going forward. If Staal was intent on playing with his brother he would have come over in the following offseason. With Skinner and Staal they already had a good mix down the middle.

This guy seems like a rather bland, white bread, kind of puppet. That Staal/Sutter deal(Jokinen too?) seemed deliberately telegraphed by league execs. Is Jimmy a quiet yes-man that'll do as he's told? Maybe the league wants it that way? Key market & all...

Sometimes think the GM's are simply honorary appts, & the league engineers trades as they see fit.

ps-Please put up that cute lil' tinfoil pic(guy & cat)k?..Thanks.

No need to .. as long as you acknowledge the 'pic' exists, then it has done its job .. B)

This is a strange move in my view as I thought the reason he stepped aside in Caroline was the he wanted to retire.

He's a Hall of Famer and already has his Stanley Cup managing the Canes so I'm curious as to why he'd make a move like this.

Also, I thought he was a part owner of the Canes, so wouldn't this be a conflict of interest?

I'm am shocked to see a Lemieux owned team make such a questionable choice.
Their interim GM Botterill has just as good as a track record, and knows how to scout talent. They were considering BriseBois from Tampa as well. Both those two choices are infinitely better than Rutherford.

I'd understand if you made an exception for Scotty Bowman, because even at his age, the guy is sharp as a razor. Poor choice in my opinion.

I would not be surprised to see Botterill get a GM gig somewhere else in 12-13 months.

Maybe he's brought in for a couple of season to mentor Jason Botterill, who will take over in 2-3 years?

Then they could hired Rutherford as President, and just have Botterill as GM. That way he has someone to report to, and still has his hand running the team.

He was already the Hurricanes' President. Public image wise, I don't think he'd quit a job as President of one team and accept the exact same role on another team.

I read somewhere that he still had desires to GM shortly after stepping down from that position in Carolina. This certainly fits the bill in accomplishing that.

Well played.

Rutherford says Jason Botterill is "getting very close" to being a GM.

Rutherford says he expects to be GM in Pittsburgh for "two or three years."

Rutherford: "We have two or three guys here who are close to being general managers" and "I know I am mentoring them."
