alfstonker
I have decided to get rid of my fairly ancient 5:1 home theatre system and have bought a Q Acoustic BT3 set up (just 2 amped speakers) They sound great and fairly deep but I want to add a little impact at low frequencies. Anyone have any suggestions that they own or have heard.
Xbox
For a purchase like this, it's best to do it during Black Friday or Boxing Day. I got $800 worth of PolkAudio Equipment for $500 in 2012 on boxing day. Came with a sub woofer. Really neat home theater system.
Undrafted
<deleted> Edit: ooops, I didn't notice you were looking for something less than $400. Never mind.
HowYaDrouin
Go to visions, and talk to their sales reps, they make all their money on commission, and have free range to give you whatever price they want. If you spend money, they'll give you huge discounts. I bought a Pioneer 8400BH, a dual 12 inch JL sub, a 1000 watt JL amp, and 4 JL 6.5 co-axle speakers for under $800, retail on the head unit alone is over $1000. Stefan
My advice would be, don't buy local. Also don't get sucked into sales. It's usually really low end hardware at a price that's reasonable for the equipment. CHeck newegg and Amazon. I got my polk audio from newegg a while back, did some price matching, and saved a ton of money. Also good to check reviews on CNET before purchasing. Don't get lured into a major brand like sony or Panasonic. Just because it's a reputable brand doesn't mean it's a quality product. These companies have low end equipment as well as high end, and their high end is usually more expensive than the polk audios of the world. Lastly, get polk audio. Its amazing. Mr.DirtyDangles
JL is my all time favorite for car audio and are amazing speaker builders. Just amazing quality and sound. Not cheap no where near 400 we're talking thousands actually Try JAMO. http://www.jamo.com/speaker-lines/subwoofers/

I don not trust vision product warranty but they do have some descent products. JL sub ? how much was that ? They prob threw in all the others for free when you bought the sub lol. JL costs but is so worth it.
aGENT
www.svsound.com/subwoofers Or www.hsuresearch.com/subwoofers.html You could also build your own (best bang for your buck). Just Google "diy subwoofer" and you'll have TONS of info.

Just Google "diy subwoofer" and you'll have TONS of info. Actually, SVS subwoofers was what I was about to recommend before deleting my post. Both the brands you mentioned are above the OP's $400 limit. --- To the OP: I don't know if you're willing to spend over the limit you specified, but SVS does have a model that sells for $500 off their website and they apparently ship for free within the US. I own a different model than the two "entry-level" models they have, but I certainly can vouch for the quality of their products. It's not likely you'll find a used SVS sub on your local Craigslist or Kijiji, but it never hurts to look.

You're just not going to get worthwhile performance from anything below ~$500 you buy at a store/online (unless used) imo. You can however build a decent sub for about that. All true, but DIY also requires the ability and knowledge to construct one properly, including getting the right component parts. I mean, even if you screw up just the cabinet, you'll end up with something that sounds worse than a commercial brand sub for the same money. Think retail it was like $400, also bought it on like the 28th of December so it was during their boxing week sale. I think I only payed $140 for it if I remember correctly. Anyone have any suggestions that they own or have heard. Polk Audio PSW 125. They cost around 250-300 and are great bang for your buck. Sound quality is great and they can be as loud as you ever need in an average house. As for people recommending JL it's just overpriced and your basically paying for the name. Unfortunately unless your buying a W7(which is overrated anyway) your just over paying for a product that's not bad, but not great either.
alfstonker
Thanks to all. Will take your suggestions and look on Ebay. This is really a second system as my main system for music is Linn and that cost me plenty. I mainly just watch sport on the TV with the occasional film hence the budget price. Canuck Surfer
Paradigm model PS 1000 absolutely humps! Will be less than $400 in US. 100 watts, vented rear design. JBL and Polk only start getting good once you get into some larger dollar ranges. Simple test when buying, pick it up? If it weighs 40 lbs its got a big magnet and can drive. If it weighs 10 lbs and is a major name brand; they're trying to take advantage of you... I have a 1500 watt Velodyne 15" downward firing sub in one room which is absolutely sick! But I paid near $1200 US. I used to sell gear. That Paradigm sub is dope!
alfstonker
Ok, thanks to a friend of my brother, I have landed this beauty for just $85. He has had it for quite a while but it was in perfect condition. Made in UK I believe and they are well reviewed there. For such a small unit it is a bit of a monster in performance. I trialled it on a couple of episodes of GoT just through the BT3's and then with the Quake connected. Well the sound of the BT3's was really damn good but when I connected up the Quake it was like sitting in the front row of a movie theatre. When the giant was punching through the wooden face of the tunnel door the thuds were clear, tight and with as much base as anyone would want without it becoming uncomfortable. I'm still trying various set up adjustments and placements but it seems an awesome sub for its size and the money I paid. I don't think they are available anymore but I googled them and Rel seem to be distributed by Sumiko. http://akustiktune.at/documents/RELQuake.pdf
