underrated
I haven't been around these boards much lately but it seems like many of the suggestions are based around moving up from the #6 pick, or trading Kesler to Anaheim. I'll try to avoid those and make some more out-of-the-box suggestions. I don't think the Canucks are in as bad of a place as it seems on first glance. We have a core than is getting older but also just simply didn't fit under the Torterella regime last year, and had a down season the year before from Stanley Cup PTSD With the right coach and right system, I predict a bounce back year for players who got killed by Torterella like Edler, Burrows and the Sedins. HEATLEY WITH SEDINS - A guy who is granted often an underachiever but could actually be a great fit for us is Dany Heatley. He's a big body veteran sniper who doesn't play a fast game (like the Sedins) but can cycle, score from the slot, and could be had for a discount rate off what he used to make. He could be a perfect fit with the Sedins. Signing him for around 3 million coming off a 12 goal year could be a perfect combo to rejuvenate all three guys on that line. PARENTEAU WITH KESLER, BURROWS- Trade for PA Parenteau, a tough nosed guy who battles, can pass and score. He plays very similar to Burrows, and like Burrows can excel under the right coach. Colorado seems to want to get rid of him so he can be acquired inexpensively. I would assume a mid level pick and/or prospect. Parenteau, Kesler and Burrows could be a line that nobody wants to play against and can easily be matched up as a shut down/agitating/and scoring line against other teams top lines. BILL BELICHICK STYLE DRAFT - I also think that Bill Belichick in the NFL does something brilliant which has helped his team compete for a decade and I'm surprised other GM's haven't learned from. He trades current picks for future better picks. By giving GM's in the win-now mentality a player now, he gets multiple picks down the road. The 6th overall pick is good and there are good players to acquire but next season is much better. You can probably trade down in this draft and pick up a great extra first rounder next year. I'd suggest trading the #6 pick and a later rounder to someone like Columbus for their first round pick (#16) and next years first round pick (or next years second and third). Or something like that. PUCK MOVING DEFENSEMAN (SPECIFICALLY TYLER MYERS) - I think the loss of Ehrhoff years back really hurt us for bringing the puck up the ice. Bieksa and Edler are okay but a true pure skating defenseman would be great. Some ideas are Del Zotto, Enstrom, Ellis. However in a much bigger move, the perfect guy is Tyler Myers. A right handed shot to go alongside Alex Edler's left shot. His trade value is low but he's still a young behemoth defenseman from the WHL who is a smooth skater. A bigger trade would be needed to make it happen. I'm not exactly sure what his trade value is right now but with a package from draft picks, Horvat, Jensen, Kassian, Shinkaruk, Tanev etc could work. For the sake of my roster down below, I'm going to suggest Shinkaruk, Tanev and a second rounder for Tyler Myers. OTHER MOVES Buyout Booth Re-sign Santorelli Sign big local defenseman Jeff Schultz to a two-way contract as a depth defenseman LINEUP Sedin - Sedin - Heatley Parenteau - Kesler - Burrows Higgins - Santorelli - Jensen/Horvat Matthias - Richardson - Kassian Hamhuis - Bieksa Edler - Myers Garrison - Corrado extras: Schultz, Stanton Lack Markstrom With the right coach I think this roster is quite good. For cheap it's added a guy like Heatley to rejuvenate his career and the Sedins. It's adding a solid competitor in Parenteau, a huge young defenseman in Myers, an extra first round pick next year without really detracting from our core much. Jiggs50
No to PA. Heatley seems to be past his prime. Giving up too much for Myers but I do like him.
Pears
Too much for Myers. But would an Edler for Myers swap work? I think we might have to add a bit but it is a change of scenery type deal.
smithers joe
no to heatley and myers...kassian on the 4th line?. myers makes as many defensive gaffs as edler does.... put a playmaking center between kesler and a goal scoring lw'er.... put burrows back with the sedins play tanev with edler.....bieksa with garrison and hamhuis with ? sign tanev, kassian and santorelli move horvat to 2nd line center and let kesler tutor him in the game.. So you're saying the Canucks should do basically nothing different than this year except move Kesler out of his natural position for a rookie to take the spot? William_Clarkson
Heatley on the first line, are you joking? Minnesota's 4th liner.
Bure.10
Big no to heatley! He's done as a top 6 fwd. I'd like the team to get younger, not older and slower. Sedins+Heatley would be the slowest line in the nhl
Wiznac
So when trying to get younger we trade our good young players away and sign more veterans ?
Nuxfanabroad
Heatley has the strongest back in the league. Dude's been carrying some heavy baggage for quite some time. If I could rig him up a time machine, I would.
