[Report] Martin Brodeur to test free agency

Done with Devils? Brodeur ‘definitely’ going to free agency:

LOS ANGELES -- Add Martin Brodeur's name to the mix for the July 1 free-agent market, as the NHL's all-time winningest goaltender has decided he's ready to leave New Jersey and see what's out there.

"I've come to the conclusion that I'm definitely going to be available July 1,'' Brodeur told ESPN.com on Friday. "I want to play one more season and I want to see what's out there."

Brodeur, who turned 42 last month, said he hasn't completely shut the door on returning to the Devils but feels like it's most likely he'll be elsewhere next season.

"I've had a lot of good conversations with the Devils, but I'm not inclined at going back at this point," said Brodeur, whose contract expires June 30. "I just feel that with Schneids (goalie Cory Schneider) the organization has to move on. Me being around might be tough a little bit for them. I don't completely put it out of the question (returning to New Jersey), but I don't want to mess up the cards for the Devils.

"At the end of the day, it doesn't matter where I go next, I'm always going to be a Devil. I'm always going to come back to the organization. But I want to play one more year. So I'll see what's out there."

Brodeur briefly dipped into the July free-agent market a couple of years ago before re-signing with the Devils. This time he's mentally prepared to make the jump.

"I want to challenge myself. It's a different opportunity, I've never experienced this before," Brodeur said. "I feel the year I had last season I can still play at a high level. I think I can help certain teams. I look at what happened in the playoffs with certain goalies and certain teams, I wish I could have been there for them."

In terms of a fit, Brodeur has a few ideas.

"I've got to see what the opportunities are. I'm not going to go somewhere where I don't feel comfortable," he said. "If I go somewhere as a No. 2 goalie, it's going to be a team that has a really good chance to win a Stanley Cup. If I go for a No. 1 job, it's going to depend on the situation. I think there are teams that can use me."

Brodeur also joked that maybe nobody will want him.

He does know that he'll be patient, as he may have to wait and see as the free-agent market develops.

If we trade Markstrom then I think trying to sign brodeur for a year would be perfect. If not, maybe Vokoun too. Also a solid 1 year option,

We have 3 young Swedish tenders that we should run with and be patient with. I have a lot of faith in Rollie and Markstrom seems like he has the perfect build to mold into Rollie's style.

The thing with Markstrom is that even though he's 6'6, he's tiny. His body isn't big and isn't built enough to look like a mammoth in the net. He's still got holes even when he's on top of his crease and he needs to bulk up a little more to be able to cover the net entirely. Especially if he's going to be playing deep in the net most of the time, he needs to bulk up. Other than that, his outstanding athleticism should be able to help him.

If I was Brodeur, I would sit down this summer and evaluate my options.

The guy has enough money to afford to retire, I'm sure he will continue making money from his hockey career as well because of the name he has created. He would have more time with his family and see his kids more. I am sure he will be back in hockey eventually in management or in coaching because he is a very smart guy.

It's about protecting your legacy as well. He could finish his career of with dignity and loyalty to the Devils, the only franchise he has ever played for. It's similar to Modano. Is it really worth it to play another year? Imagining him in another jersey is even difficult to do.

I wouldn't really like Brodeur on this team but the Canucks desperately need a veteran goalie for these young kids. A Swede would obviously be ideal but Lack cannot play 70 games next season and I wouldn't trust Markstrom with more than 15 to be honest.

Brodeur for 2.5M

Lack - 40 games (he's done it before, last season his limit was about 30 before his play started sliding)

Brodeur - 30 games (down from 40 last year)

Markstrom - 12 games

Brodeur in Van cannot be a serious consideration. There was trouble in NJ last year when Schneids took the net for a run. Brodeur was not above being public about his displeasure. Van does not need Brodeur's experience, they have Rollie. Having both of them sets up a possible conflict as both try to mentor

Lack and Markstrom. Van currently has the two best tenders from the AHL of 3 years ago. Erikson was one of the best in the SEL 2 years ago. Be patient.
