article from pierre lebrun....

It has the potential to be quite the offseason when it comes to high-profile centers changing teams.

We always say top centers dont grow on trees and are hard to come by; well, there are at least two on the market in Ryan Kesler and Jason Spezza and it remains to be seen how it plays out on the Joe Thornton front.

First, in Vancouver, where the Canucks went a fair ways down the road in trade talks involving Kesler before the March 5 trade deadline, in particular with the Anaheim Ducks and Pittsburgh Penguins, before deciding the offers werent good enough and pulling him back.

The question is, whats the deal with him now given the new management in place in Vancouver?

Sources said new Canucks GM Jim Benning has already taken calls from teams on Kesler, if for no other reason than theyre wondering if hes still available or not.

He is, but the price remains high.

Kesler has two more years on his deal at a reasonable $5 million cap hit and will be a hot commodity again if Vancouver steps up trade efforts.

My sense is that the Canucks, in any package, would want both an asset who can help them right now (preferably a center) plus future assets. And, yes, I think Kesler still wants out of Vancouver. TSN colleague Darren Dreger reported Friday that it's believed Kesler has a list of six teams hed be willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to.

Spezza, with a year left on his deal, indicated to Senators management that he would welcome a change if a deal that makes sense comes Ottawas way. I suspect talks will heat up on that front closer to the draft later this month.

And, in San Jose, the Sharks have indicated they are entering a rebuilding mode. What does that mean for Joe Thornton, who signed a three-year extension earlier this season? Does he want to be around for a rebuild? Either way, Thornton holds all the cards with a no-movement clause. Same goes for Patrick Marleau, for that matter.

we hold the biggest bargaining chip on the market for the first time in awhile and we gotta make it count

now what can the rumoured teams involved in the rumours offer us...

Anaheim, they have a plethora of assets but unless they involve bonino then we will have a gaping hole up the middle. on the flip side they have a lot of young players who are right on the cusp of exploding onto the scene with players like etem, smith-pelly, silfverberg, vatanen and lindholm not to mention another young prospect in rakell. you cant forget that Anaheim is losing selanne to retirement and koivu might follow suit so that leaves two holes in their line up so they might be a little tentative to meet the demands for kesler.

what I want from anaheim

to ana: kesler

to van: smith-pelly, bonino, theodore, 1st pick 2015

sedin-sedin-s.pelly

burrows-bonino-kassian

Higgins-horvat-santorelli

matthias-richardson-hansen

its a line up that lacks a constant secondary scoring threat but we can comfortable roll 4 lines with speed and size on each line

Pittsburgh, I really don't think they will be as interested anymore because of what has transpired on and off the ice since the trade deadline. their focus has now shifted towards depth in the bottom six and not high end talent and they really don't have the right assets to really make this interesting

Philadelphia, they are interesting one because they have the most appealing assets but they don't seem to be that interested in meeting asking price. they got players like b.schenn, couturier, read, Simmonds, raffl and mcginn.

what I want from philadephia...first off I highly doubt they will trade Simmonds and couturier very easily

to van: b.schenn, read, mcginn, 1st pick 2015

to phi: kesler

sedin-sedin-burrows

Higgins-schenn-kassian

read-horvat-santorelli

Matthias-Richardson-Hansen

similar lineup to the Ana deal model but schenn is a definite upgrade over bonino

Chicago, I really cant see kesler in a chi uniform with all the history between the two teams.

tampa bay, they are kind of an underdog team because you really haven't heard a whole lot about them but they do have some interesting names and NO they aren't trading drouin. they have other players like killorn, palat, kucherov and Connolly but no centers.

what I want from tampa bay

to tb: kesler

to van: killorn, Connolly, audy-marchessault, 1st pick 2015, 1st pick 2016

sedin-sedin-burrows

killorn-santorelli-connolly

Higgins-horvat-kassian

maathias-richardson-hansen

possible secondary scoring woes with this line up but still a 4 line team

Colorado, is an iffy one because if they keep one or both of stastny or oreilly then they have 4 top 6 centers with Duchene and mackinnon already there (I know mackinnon played rw and oreilly played lw during the season). their biggest need this off season will also be upgrading their defence so im not sure kesler-col is a good fit

Detroit, they are also an interesting one because they lack the right chips and they have made it clear they don't want to trade young assets but they could use kesler and since that's kesler hometown team he might be more intent to go their and play his heart out like he did in the 2011 cup run. they have assets like mantha, nyquist, tatar and the often injured speedy helm. personally, nyquist and tatar aren't ideal because they were invisible in the playoffs against due their lack of size and I doubt they would fair much better against the cali teams.

what I would want from Detroit...

to det: kesler

to van: mantha, helm, jurco, 1st pick 2015

only helm is a lock for the nhl club but mantha is a beast and we all saw it at the world juniors

to sum up, kesler is the piece that will attract the most interest and demand the highest price for good reason from across the league. none of us wanna see him go but trading kesler will recharge the franchise if you can believe it and turn the page for this franchise. personally, I think he will end up in Anaheim because they seem to be the most interested team with the most attractive assets.

I hope you're right, but I'm skeptical we'll receive such massive packages. I'd assume about 3 nice pieces, it appears you're expecting 4 or 5 from each deal.

Again..very much HOPING you're correct.

If we got any of those deals.... I might have a heart attack ..... Seriously...

3 good-excellent pieces is what I expect.

DSP/Etem, 10th, Theodore

BShenn/Laughton, 1st, Mcginn

Killorn, Connolly, 1st

Jurco, Spoul/Ouellett 1st

Take any of those .

I will stand by my opinion that Kesler will be a Blackhawk come next year. They just seem like such a perfect fit. Kesler wants to win a cup and Chicago desperately needs depth down the middle, it may be the only place they are truly lacking. Chicago is drooling over the thought of a top six consisting of Toews, Kane, Sharp, Hossa, Kesler, Saad. There have also been rumors circulating that Kane desperately wants to play with Kesler which could add more fuel to the fire with Kane nearing free agency. I also think the Hawks have some good looking pieces that would also fit into Benning and Linden's make the playoffs mentality.

The original rumored deal was:

To CHI: Kesler

To Van: Teravainen, Leddy, Shaw

Although with cap space possibly being an issue we may have to take on Bickell and a pick instead of Shaw. Leddy also may not have as much value since he was the "Scapegoat" of the LA series. Teravainen however would instantly boost our prospect pool and would most likely be NHL ready next season. He would have the most skill of any of our prospects, arguably even if we drafted Reinhart. Leddy is a young puck moving defenseman that everyone has been clamoring for around here. He also has a bit of size which is useful. If we take on Bickell it is mostly a cap dump on their end however he would be a serviceable depth guy, would force the Canucks hand on either buying out him or Booth though (8 mil locked up on two bottom 6 players isn't ideal). I would prefer the Shaw deal as he is a young pest with some scoring touch, reminds me a lot of Burrows.

Chicago's depth down the middle was exposed against LA so they may even be willing to offer more. I think the best deal is going to come from them as opposed to hoping two picks in a weak draft work out in an Anaheim deal.

Unfortunately, I think the OP is hoping for bit too much for Kesler alone in any of those deals.

I never really thought of Chicago as real destination for Kesler but now that it is mentioned and they certainly are lacking a second line center, I would love that deal proposed by Jordan Belfort. Leddy would be a huge alone. Teravainen would be unbelievable too. Those two alone blow away any other deal out there. Chicago could be a real darkhorse in this and they would have to pay huge for him. I could see a deal like that working out. Interesting!!!

Elliot Freidman just said on Hotstove Kesler has reiterated he wants out (and wasn't said as speculation). Stated what is not certain is if he's expanded his list See ya spoiled brat, glad he wants out....Selfish ego maniac, forgot what got him where he was, and once he won the selke lost the hunger, thought he had 'arrived' to bad he didnt realize you never 'arrive'

those are just educated guesses from what I have heard what the canucks are looking for and what the price that has been set. it is an incredibly high price but that's where id set the bar at to begin with.
