Will any top 5 picks get moved? (another draft thread)

Recommended Posts

I decided to put together a little (not so little) list of what each teams may be thinking heading into the draft.

Florida 1st Overall

What they are looking for?

The panthers are desperate for a goal scorer on their team, Bjugstad lead the team with 38 points in 72 games. They only had 5 players break the double digits in goals last season and the team could use some flash. The need some excitement in their building to get the fans excited.

In order of importance:

  • A first line RW scorer, or
  • A rugged top 4 defence, or +
  • Pick in the 7-13 range to draft additional scoring (Ehlers, Nylander, Kapanen)
  • Goalie prospect

What they are not looking for?

  • Big center or any centers players for that matter
  • Young players that are yet to crack the NHL, they already are full of young potential.

If the pick is not traded?

  • They draft Ekblad

Ekblad is hands down the best player in the draft. He is said to the be most NHL out of the all the draft picks this year and would be a great addition to the Panthers back line.

Chance of pick being moved?

50% chance they trade their pick. The 1st overall pick a rarely moved, in fact top 5 picks are rarely moved prior to the draft. At this point FLA needs to put a winning product on the Ice and playoffs are there goal. If they don’t feel the package they receive back helps them achieve that playoff goal next year, with future potential they will likely keep the pick.

Buffalo 2nd Overall

What they are looking for?

This is a team that is in full rebuild mode. They expect and hope to be in a similar position next year to pick up another young franchise player. They don’t want a player to push this team up the standing next season. They will continue to develop players in there organization and work on building a winning product.

In order of importance:

  • Young first line players, leading role players
  • High end prospects
  • Goaltending prospect

What they are not looking for?

  • They don’t have a huge need for young defensive depth.
  • They also don’t need centers not capable of playing in the first line role.

If the pick is not traded?

  • They draft Bennett

Bennett can play wing and center. He has the ability to be a team leader and put a team on his back. His high end skill will put him on the first line

Chance of pick being moved?

5% chance they trade their pick. The Sabres are in rebuild mode. Rebuilding teams do not trade away youth or picks. Unless a team gives them young sure fire players this pick is staying in Buffalo’s hands.

Edmonton 3rd Overall

What they are looking for?

A team that has been in rebuild mode for the last 7 years. They are stacked up with offensive skill and now are looking to add size into their top 6. The have some high end tradable assets that may help this roster out. They also need to start making a playoff push. Fans are starting to get restless of watching a losing product. It would be nice for the team to give the fans something to be excited about before they move into their new building.

In order of importance:

  • Top 6 power forward
  • Veteran leader

What they are not looking for?

  • Small skilled center, small skilled players in general.

If the pick is not traded?

  • They draft Draisaitl

Draisaitl is exactly the type of player the Oil need on their team. His could very well be NHL ready next season and will give the Oil a huge upgrade down the middle. He is a unbelievable visionary and would look great in the Oilers top 6.

Chance of pick being moved?

15% chance they trade their pick. The Oilers don’t need more prospect but after drafting the BPA for 4 straight years they will not miss the opportunity to draft a player the fits this teams exact team needs.

Calgary 4th Overall

What they are looking for?

Flames have finally decided it was time to go into rebuild mode. This will be the second year they will be drafting a top ten pick and if they can have similar results next year they will certainly have good pieces to start building towards a winning team.

In order of importance:

  • Young high potential defencemen
  • Big truculent top 6 forwards

What they are not looking for?

  • High priced vets.
  • Players in their prime

If the pick is not traded?

  • They draft Reinhart

Flames would be ecstatic to draft Sam Reinhart. The already have the oldest brother in the system and are familiar with the family. Reinhart’s overall game will be a huge upgrade to the current flames prospect. They can either use him on the wing or have a strong 1, 2 punch with Monahan and Reinhart down the middle.

Chance of pick being moved?

.1% chance they trade their pick. This pick is not getting moved. Flames need to fill their cupboard’s as much as possible in the next few years almost zero chance they trade away a top five pick.

New York Islanders 5th Overall

What they are looking for?

NYI decided to hold onto their pick this year. Garth Snow said it was because they didn’t feel that next year they will be in the same situation of picking a top pick. Expect them to go all in and make a push for playoffs, In order to do this they will need a PMD (could be Boyle if they can sign him) and a skilled forward to play on a line with Tavares to get their fans excited about the new rink.

In order of importance:

  • A first line LW scorer, or
  • Goalie prospect
  • 2015 first round pick
  • Top 4 D

What they are not looking for?

  • Young Centers
  • Young prospects
  • Project defence

If the pick is not traded?

  • They draft Dal Colle

Dal Colle has size and skill. He would look great on a wing alongside Tavares. He fits the needs of the long term projection plans of the team.

Chance of pick being moved?

70% chance they trade their pick. This team needs to win, drafting a prospect does not help them win next year. If they can move it for a first line winger they would do it in a heartbeat.

I don't understand why any of these teams would move their pick. All of these teans are rebuilding and are different stages of that rebuild.

Ekblad-Is exactly what Florida needs.

Reinhart-Becomes Buffalo's number 1c

Draistil-Oilers big top line center

Flames-Can take anyone. Need help everywhere.

Isles-After Strome there is a huge drop off in top 6 prospect forward depth. Should be Virtanen or Ritchie

None of these teams SHOULD trade out. Makes very minimum sense. Unless of course someone offers the world...

The only team I see potentially moving the pick, would be the Isles because they're trying to win right now. The other teams aren't moving out unless they get an offer they can't refuse (Kadri, Paneuf, 8th)

Yes the Islander I think have the greatest chance at moving their pick. Garth snow sure seemed like it was a great possibility.

Florida doesn't have a top D-Man prospect, they need Ekblad a lot more than what you listed.

Reinhart-Becomes Buffalo's number 1c

The only way I see this playing out, is if Buffalo drafts Noah Hanifin next year. Basically everyone else in the top 5 next year are center man, including Connor McDavid. Unless Buffalo tries the Pittsburgh model.

Florida and the Islanders have the highest chance of trading their top 5 pick. More so, the Islanders. But I compltely agree with you, The Islanders would probably draft Dal Colle, or the other two highly skilled wingers which are Nylander and Ehlers. I have no doubt in my mind that they will draft one of those 3 with their pick, if they hold onto it.

The Panthers may or may not hold on to their pick. Since their GM has openly said, that he is shopping the 1st overall pick. Whether or not he gets a deal that actually intrests him enough to give it up, is what we will have to wait and see. Ekblad is a no-brainer for the 1st overall pick as well. Just hope he doesn't turn into Erik Johnson 2.0

I don't see Erik Johnson as a bust just yet. He had 39 points this year and was hella reliable. Injuries have really set him back, but he's trending upwards imo...

good job on the post op

that being said i really believe florida and the islanders will try to trade their picks away for players who can help them now as they both need to be better next year.

the canucks are in a bind because it appears kesler is not changing his mind about leaving so they will need to find a replacment. i think the canucks will overpay for that first pick so they can draft reinhart (athough i dont think hell be ready for 2nd line minutes next year)

Great post OP!

I think if anyone moves their pick out of the top 5 it would be the Islanders who are the closest to getting anywhere out of the 5 teams.

Trading a Top 5 pick could potentially bring a return of 2 NHL players or 1 NHL player and a prospect/draft pick.

All teams should consider moving their pick if they can improve right away.

Out of the top 5... How many of these players will actually play in the NHL next year? Ekblad and Reinhart for sure, I don't see Bennett making the NHL next year.
