Caboose
Ottawa Senators captain Jason Spezza has asked to be traded, general manager Bryan Murray told reporters in New York on Wednesday. Murray said Spezza has "requested we give him a chance to go elsewhere." The GM said a few teams have shown serious interest, but the Senators' preference is to "send him somewhere we don't have to play him every night," according to Elliotte Friedman of "Hockey Night in Canada." Spezza, 30, had 23 goals and 66 points this season, his 11th with Ottawa and first as captain, a role he eas given after Daniel Alfredsson left for the Detroit Red Wings last summer. Taken by the Senators with the second pick of the 2001 NHL Draft, Spezza is second on their all-time list in goals (252) and points (687). He's scored at least 30 goals in a season four times. He has 52 points in 56 Stanley Cup Playoff games, including seven goals and 22 assists in 20 games to help the Senators reach the 2007 Stanley Cup Final. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=722478

terrible.dee
As I just said in another thread, this could affect the Kes deal though they are completely different players, this will be used as leverage against us.

Spezza: Chicago Thornton: Montreal? Kesler: Anaheim I can see that happening but maybe Thornton will cost too much for Montreal.

kazin!
I don't get why Murray would come out and say that. That just lowers his value.
EmployeeoftheMonth
I don't get why Murray would come out and say that. That just lowers his value. Not really. Teams are still gonna have to pay for him. Any GM gets a call from Murray shopping Spezza they're going to know what's up anyways. This announcement will probably change nothing other than have teams calling and making offers.
Madness
Should not have come out and said this. It'll hurt his value.
Provost
I think that Thornton and Spezza will be consolation prizes. Kesler is younger, has a much smaller cap hit... and has a nice couple of years of term left.
mangosteens
How about a multi team deal or mulitple deals where the Canucks end up with Spezza? The reported sticking point in previous Kesler deals was that the Canucks wanted a roster player,a center, back. Personally I would rather have a year of Jason Spezza than Brandon Sutter (the rumored center coming back from Pittsburgh). What if the Kesler trade gets only picks and prospects and then the Canucks trade some of that acquired youth for Spezza? Spezza is an expiring UFA, so realistically the most Ottawa will get is picks for him anyway. That would be a win for Kesler as he gets his request granted, the Canucks get some youth and viable top 6 center back for this season, and Ottawa gets some picks too. Also, the Canucks avoid having to commit long term to a UFA center in a very thin crop of free agents this year. If Spezza works out, the Canucks can try and resign him, or if he doesn't, he can be flipped again at the trade deadline since he is a UFA. Entirely different trade market.

Master Mind
They going to lose Alfredsson and Spezza in back-to-back seasons? Would be tough for Sens fans, and similar to what NJ went through. As for Spezza, I think the Blues could use him the most. He'd bring some much needed skill that they were missing in their top 6.
Caboose
Kesler is a dynamic two-way second line center who can play first line minutes, Thornton and Spezza mainly focus on offense. If that's the type of offensive production you get from a player who can play "1st line minutes", there's a problem with that player.

Alex Burrows 14
The only was getting spezza makes sense is if we keep Kesler. Which is what I want. Spezza would be the perfect linemate for Kesler. Lets do it.

I agree, Kesler is the prize commodity this summer, Aging, easy minute, points only guys can't compare with what Kes brings to the table. Teams looking to deal already have their easy minute point getters,
TheRussianRocket.
This adds a different dimension to the ballgame. To Vancouver potentially and give 1 last kick at the can, and Kesler gives it a final shot too? Dank - Hank - Jensen (worked well last year) Kesler - Spezza - Kassian (sniper, playmaker, mix/hybrid) Higgins - Horvat - Matthias Burrows - Richardson - Hansen Sestito ? All of a sudden you have 4 lines which you can roll at any time and play whoever is the hottest. Interesting...
