Looking forward to the slate of games tonight. By Sunday we will have a very clear picture of the real NHL playoffs. Final jostling might take all the way to the final night of the season but I expect we will see some clearing up of the 'who is in the mix' question by Sunday morning.

EXTENSION: The Arizona Coyotes have signed defenseman Alex Goligoski to a four year contract extension.

small.pngAlex Goligoski: 4 years, $ 23 million dollar contract ( $ 5,750,000.00 per season ).

* deal includes full no-trade-clause for years 1,2, and 3 of the contract, a limited no-trade-clause for year 4 ( player provides 10 team list he would accept a trade to ).

We are ecstatic to get Alex under contract.

We have always felt that we needed another top pairing D, and Alex fits that mold and within the price range we were willing to go to.

Thanks to Agent MV for the easy & quick negotiations.

I think the 'who is in the mix' question is pretty clear already.

Out East, only question is do the Sens stay ahead of the Bruins. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on the Sens. Too hot at the right time, and a game in hand.

In the West, the Flames, Jets and Kings fight for 2 playoff spots. Would LOVE to see the Kings miss, but that extra point the Flames lost last night was huge. That one's a toss up, though I'm hoping the Flames and Jets make the cut.

But for the most part, there's not many playoff spots left up for grabs. Playoff match-ups may still be up in the air, but I'd say 14 of the 16 playoff teams are pretty much decided, barring a huge meltdown somewhere.

I was looking forward to tonights games as well, as I am in the final four, and a good night could push me into the finals in another hockey pool I'm in with an $800 for 1st and $400 for second prize... Unfortunately absolutely everything went sour and I am now in a huge hole....dang TV is lucky its fairly new or it may have a hole in it...lol. (An NHLer is actually one of the 14 guys who are in the pool)... AHHH... sometimes this game can drive you nuts. :P

You are correct sir, but I was referring to the only one X in the league standings page of NHL.com...the Rangers, coincidentally, are the only official lock in the playoffs as of this morning..but I think by the end of play Saturday night most of those spots will be sewn up.

As far as your take on it, i agree a whole lot. I don't think Florida can surge enough to overcome two teams and squeak in, but Boston is still just as likely as Ottawa out east. In the West Dallas needs half their remainng games just to catch up to the 8th place..so its just Calgary hanging on by virtue of a game in hand. on Winnipeg and being one point behind the Kings.

For our Canucks to fall completely out it would take a real meltdown since Calgary needs 25% of its remaining games to overcome us and if that happens, we would still have three other teams most likely to be knocked out. Vancouver has the tie breakers on every possible combo where it could be a tie breaker that decides 8th place. whew.

out of character, but I wanted to weigh in a bit on the playoff picture after tonights games, and sort my thoughts, if nothing else.

East

In: Montreal, Tampa Bay, Detroit, Rangers, Pittsburgh, NYIslanders

Bubble: Washington, Boston, Ottawa, Florida

Out:Philly, BJ's, Devils, Canes, Leafs and Sabres

How it plays out East:

FLorida will know in the next two games how their chances are going to be, playing Ottawa and BOston, two teams ahead of them and fighting for a wild card spot. I don't give FLorida much hope and would personally simply count them out already except that I am biased against the sunshine state.

I just don't see washington with less than 97 to end the season and so I believe they are in and I just can't prove that yet.

That leaves Boston and Ottawa neck and neck..I can't pretend to know which will be in and who will be out, but I know Ottawa will have the tougher time making it. In my books, the ninth team and only race left in the east is Boston or Ottawa and they don't play each other at all from here on out. Go Sens!!

West

In: Nashville, BLues, Wild, Chicago, Ducks

Bubble: Van, LA, Calgary, the Jets

Out: Dallas, San Jose, COlorado, Edmonton and Arizona

How it plays out West: Vancouver hits 94 points with 4 games left and they are IN early enough to rest a few guys.

Calgary needs to win back to backs to bolster their odds, a split or two losses makes them unlikely to see April 13th in the NHL postseason.

Winnipeg needs to keep pace while the three Pacific teams play musical chairs and LA needs to hope that the Flames don't find the form they had all season long before going 4-3-3 in their last ten.

Sorry if this is useless drivel to most of you guys, but I think this helps me 'see' the standings a little better thanks for your patience
