SIGNING: The Arizona Coyotes have signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Sergei Gonchar to a one year deal.

small.pngSergei Gonchar: 1 year, $ 2.25 million dollar contract ( $ 2,250,000.00 per season ).

Potential major steal.

Whenever I've thought Gonchar was done he pops up with another 35-40 points. This has happened 3 or 4 times already.

No reason to think he couldn't do it again.

Ecstatic to add him.

I honestly thought that my offer was going to be tossed aside due to competing offers, but glad to have added him on a low risk deal.

Updated D core:

Campbell - Carle

Reilly - Spurgeon

Folin - Gonchar

Harrison - Prout

Pastrnak, 18, signed an entry-level contract less than a month after the Bruins selected him with the 25th pick of the draft in June.

"He'll come to camp now and he'll get the experience of a training camp, get some [exhibition] games," Chiarelli said. "He had a terrific development camp. Everyone was talking about him. He's a good young player, just 18 years old. He's a player that … it's well-documented we're looking for skill and speed and he fits that bill but let's not put the cart before the horse. I think we were fortunate to get him where we got him. He had a terrific camp and we'll go from there."

Stud!

SIGNING: The Montreal Canadiens have signed free agent goaltender Thomas Greiss to a three year deal.

small.png Thomas Greiss - 3 years, $4.5 million dollar contract ($1.5 million per season).

The Habs are absolutely thrilled to have Thomas choose to commit to the Canadiens for the next three years, as he was our initial target when Free Agency began. With a tandem of Lundqvist-Griess going forward, we believe that we've addressed a major need of ours over the past few months and that our pair of netminders is now amongst the top-tier of platoons in the league.

Montreal is not done yet, though. There are a few irons in the fire regarding free agents, and the Habs are also looking to free up a roster spot or two to allow some more youngsters to come up this season. Trade talks are always welcome.

Montreal Canadiens Organization Depth Chart

Galchenyuk - Filppula - Nash

Calvert - Grabovski - Tanguay

Haula - Pirri - Jarnkrok

Smid - Olsen

McBain - Postma

Lundqvist

Slepyshev - Lander - Cormier

Shugg - Labate - Wagner

2013 1st - Rasmus Ristolainen

2013 2nd - Chris Bigras

2013 3rd - traded along with Jeremy Morin for Anton Stralman (later traded for FC - 3rd)

2014 1st - Alex Tuch

2014 2nd - traded along with 18th overall & 46th overall for 7th overall (Jake Virtanen) - Buffalo took Ryan Donato

2014 3rd - traded along with Daniil Zharkov for Matt Cullen

But, anyway you look at it, the Isles won a Cup the year after letting him walk.

Edit: Just looking at it now, I'm not sure I ever received my FC from LA in the Stralman trade.

So what do you think, yosh?

Haha Morin was traded to me :P I ended up moving him as part of a deal for Boyle/Bozak

I think it becomes a case of quantity vs quality. Like I said, I typically don't draft well so I probably would have more success with Hedman than with the picks. Ristolainen looks solid, and the 2014 picks could be rly good too, but will likely take time. I felt I built up a strong enough prospect pool at the time to make the deal at the expense of picks, Jurco, Grigorenko, De Haan at the time.

Since then, I added a tonne more prospect depth, especially at D, so I don't believe I missed out on too much at the drafts.

2013- Sam Morin, Madison Bowey, Justin Bailey, Chris Tierney

2014- Nik Sorensen, Tyler Bertuzzi, Linus Arnesson

While I may not have the blue chippers or sure things in any of them, they are all solid prospects in solid systems and I am happy with where all of them are in their development.

As I said....worked out for both of us.

I got a significant haul for Hedman and the next 4-8 years will tell the tale of the tape.

My system is built up significantly and I needed cap space and room for other young players who needed a chance. It's always a balance between keeping vets for the present and prospects for the future. Hedman was in a middle ground for me and I didn't think I could afford the spot or time for him and compete that year. Turns out I made a good decision for the present and the future at the time.

I have Hedman for 4 more years... seeing as I wasn't a playoff team before and didn't make the playoffs the past 2 years, the next couple years are huge for me to make the playoffs so that I have something to build on.

I think I've been moving in the right direction moving veterans for youngsters (Hedman fit that mentality, so did the Johansen offersheet) while continuing to build up a prospect pool (with a history of bad drafting). Now it's up to the youngsters to progress and take leadership of this team!

Signing:

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed Richard Clune to a 2 year, $2 million dollar contract (1mil per) with full NTC

Halftone.jpg

Very happy to have Richard Clune on our side as we continue to add toughness to our organization. So far this offseason, we have added Clarkson, Clune, Brown, Scott and Hainsey. That's a whopping 523 PIMs from last season at 6.85 for the 5 players or just over 13k per PIM

^ We are happy to know Tim Kennedy will come to camp and battle for a roster spot. We think he has the hockey sense, versatility and energy to overcome his size issues and be a difference making role player in the GML. He has 162 games of experience at the highest level, and is certainly a player we are looking forward to having in camp this September.

Nolan is blown away by the way that Rasmus Ristolainen came to prospects camp looking leaner and being jacked. Nolan said that he talked to Ristolainen last year when he was demoted to AHL Rochester. The coach said that he told Ristolainen "if you're not fit, you're not going to last". Nolan's words have had a profound impact on Ristolainen. The Finn reported to rookie camp at 207 pounds, some 15 pounds lighter than he played at last season in Buffalo and in Rochester. Ristolainen loves how strong he feels at his new weight and how much more energy he now has inside of shifts. Nolan is very pleased that the kid took his words to heart and made the necessary commitment to improving his overall conditioning. To Nolan, being good enough just isn't good enough. Just like Lindy Ruff, Nolan has given his Sabres a mandate to be in better physical condition this summer. If that means working out more and playing around on the jet skis less, than so be it. Nolan is joined at the hip with Sabres' strength and conditioning coach Doug McKenney, who is phoning players every day to make sure that they are doing their workouts, are eating correctly, and are getting the proper amount of rest.

^ I watched their scrimmage.

He was their best D by a country mile.

That's great to hear!

By the reports I've read they are also saying that Zadorov has jacked up over the offseason. Those same reports also highlight how there is little chance for him to make the team though unless he is one of the best D in regular camp.

Those two are going to be a force in a few years. Add in Pysyk, who is a stalwart type, and Jake McCabe and they are going to be a great nucleus notwithstanding their other fine prospects.

Buffalo is going to be very interesting to watch over the next 3-4 years even if they don't place well in the standings.
