I watched some Hitman games and was not that impressed. Virtanen actually had some pretty decent Canuck games in his rookie season. Green made no bones about the fact that Jake had to rebuild his game in Utica. My impression prior to last season was that he was able to play a style in Minor hockey and Junior that would not work in the NHL. IMO his positioning is much better this pre-season. When he was in Utica last year, he was rebuilding his game and try to play the right way. During that process he showed flashes and glimpses of what we see now in preseason. Just because he played well from time to time, doesn't change the fact that he didn't show nearly the same amount of consistency as what he's doing now. While he was discovering his game, there were moments where he'd bull around. Skating fast, hitting, shooting a lot, which are all great qualities, but not particularly effective when you don't make the right plays with the puck. Great qualities in perhaps a developing bottom six player- but that's not who we want him to be. What you see now is a more polished version where he has better awareness, and plays a much more mature game. That is where the biggest difference lies and is not something to overlook. Not to mention, he is more fit and much more focused than he was before preseason. Either way, I'm tired of speaking about how he was before, and I just want to give praise and support Jake. Yes I agree, he had a few decent games with the Canucks- I hope he will have 82 of those every season. I'm glad you brought up positioning, makes a huge difference and goes along with what I said about a more mature game. Used to try and drive it from down the wing every time. There were few if any posters that I noticed, calling him a bum and as for not wanting him drafted - wake up, that is the case with almost any player drafted outside the top 3. People have different draft preferences, they are entitled to have these preferences and it doesn't mean they want whoever we have picked to fail either. Some posters on here need to lose this ridiculous viewpoint that their favourite players are not allowed to be criticised if there is justification (and there certainly was with Jake) - it's childish and immature. My impression of Jake early on was that he could easily out muscle and out pace players to the net, mostly in a straight line with little hockey IQ needed. This concerned me, as that type of game doesn't play well against bigger, stronger, and faster players. It's what has never really made me excited about Stukel, who seems to play in a similar fashion but lacks Jake's high end speed and size. The last year has been big for Jake, as he seems to be developing a hockey IQ. Constructive criticism was and remains more than fine - in fact, it is the time-tested right of being a fan to offer thoughts on why your young players are or are not developing in the way that best helps your team. However, with this player the criticism left constructive at the station very early on and headed through person attacks onto complete bullsh*t about sightings of him doing things in places he never was let alone doing those things. Further, people who were actually watching him play in the AHL (live or though feeds) were totally ignored which, again, can be fine but then criticism of them started down the aggressive line (seems this thread, more than any, led to a lot of "timeouts" and permanent "cuts" to some posters). No one was saying you cannot constructively criticize this or any other player, it was the manner of that criticism that was waaaay overboard so many times and any attempt to point out factual conditions that could refute (e.g. discuss) those positions was so aggressively attacked one had to wonder what personal investment some people had in making sure this particular player failed or had personally wronged them. Just read some of the posts in this thread - pretty important to a bunch that this player be either seen as a failure OR that because this failure was not developing as quickly as they wanted, it was some form of a personal insult to the poster. At the start of my personal involvement in the thread, I was entirely indifferent to this player but after watching the direction the thread and the nature of the mean-spirited comments sprinkled throughout some decent constructive criticism compelled me to start to say "whoa, give the kid a break and let's be a little patient people" sort of things. Even pointing out his progress in compare to his draft year cohort (other first round picks) was somehow seen as a "can't do that, it interferes with our narrative". This player may or may not become all a sixth overall pick could become but he certainly was naturally blessed with all the tools to do precisely that. Now that he has taken some good steps (which didn't start in Training Camp, they were evident in Utica) in the right direction at lot of the more personal and mean-spirited comments have significantly decreased which is nice to see. 10 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You're right, it was a very small number of people. But those people were accounting for the vast majority of the posts in this topic. I can see why people are suddenly calling them out.
