On the physical side of Jake's game I look at puck possession, particularly in the ozone. Jake's ability to retain the puck is physical in nature as he is difficult to knock off the puck. He establishes body position and evaluates opportunities. IMHO he will only get better at this.

Jake, in spite of being hard to knock off the pucl, and in spite of decent Corsi numbers? Was not actuially all that great in possession. He simply shot the puck a lot.

He is so much better this year though! I never believed I would be seeing him handling the puck at the point on the PP.  He;s making drop passes, both rotating and moving with the puck this year on the cycle. Spending time in front of the net, not just fly by's. We did not see much of that in the past. Added to the open ice puck carrying he was always ok at. So improved...

I agree with you 100%.

However, when you go to almost every NHL team page they all have fans saying that about their heavy (weight wise) guys.

There are very very few NHL players that play "hard" and hit constantly within the NHL.

yah those guys are typically 4th line bangers.. jake however is evolving into a top 6 guy.

would like to see more snarl tho.. might come with age..

At his current pace, what’s a recent comparable bridge deal?

While their paths aren't completely similar, I think Kasperi Kapanen is a decent comparable. About the same age as Virtanen and put up similar numbers last season to what Jake is on pace for this season. He was given a 3 year contract with a cap hit of 3.2 million per season in the offseason.

Thanks - that seems pretty reasonable

Don’t know exactly why, but I get this fear Jake will regress if given a contract with dollars and term.  I love how Jake is turning in to a top player, but worry (still) about his maturity level.

I'd prefer to go 2 years as well. I would hate to see him regress to 4th liner with 2 more years at 3+mill left on his deal. I think the comparison is pretty apt though.

A lower, two year bridge works with our cap forecast. It also reduces risk of him falling off/regression and if I'm being honest... I think Jake needs the motivation of a shorter contract. That boy loves him some 'stick'

I could see this going to arbitration if Jake doesn't want another bridge. Either way tho I think you're right, a 4 year deal ensures we see the return of fat jake.

Apologies @Kanukfanatic

Just having fun.  Love Jake, and how he’s matured as a player.  I must admit though I’m kind of worried the success, and a big FAT contract that comes with that success, might go to his head.

I guess it does happen to some players. Let's hope the coaches will continue to have him improving and playing like he has lately.

Cheers!

IMO. Jake is a bit of an enigma that way as he does not seem to be as driven as the likes of Pettersson or Miller. I doubt that a big fat payday would change the way either of them play. Time and a big payday will be the Litmus test for Jake.

It's not like they are going to be paying him 4 million plus money -- i.e., Horvat, Miller, Myers, Edler money.  I like him more than Edler and of course Eriksson, but he won't be making mega millions. Probably under 3.00 million, which is sad as he is clearly more important to a a playoff run than Beagle, Sutter, Eriksson and arguably Edler.  He is now a top 6 forward who is likely to excel in the playoffs.  If I were Jake, lol (I'm 64 yrs old and never went beyond Midget in hockey) I'd go for a bridge contract: 2 years, maybe 3.  Imagine what a power forward who can score 50 points no matter what line he plays on would be worth?  4 to 5 minimum.  Can hit, draw penalties, score key goals, play on the point on the point on the second power play unit?  Closing in on Ryan O'Reilly stats/profile?

He probably signs a two year bridge because we can't afford any long term deals till after Petey/Hughes are signed in 2021. In 2022 Lou/Loui/Roussel/Beagle are all off so we can sign him to a long deal then.

Was Virtanen the best pick in his spot? No, but he was picked right around where he was projected to be. He's looking a lot better at this point than those taken around him. Dal Colle, Fleury, and the infamous "Second coming of Dougie Gilmour, potential 1st OA, 19 year old Sam Bennett". It seems the more time goes by the more often JB gets vindicated.
