I’ve read on a few different topics that Virtanen is expendable. Guys this kids in two years is going to be so good, I have this feeling. He’s just started to grow at the NHL level. Next year is the start of something special. I predict 20-25 goals and at least 35 assists. The following year I expect more growth. We need Jake, his all around game is real good. Scoring is coming, trust me.

I mean.... he's already scoring; any steps forward at this point (which I think you're right... they will come) are gravy!  Biggest thing Jake needs is still consistency imho.

His points is and always has been secondary.  It's always been how he played the game is more important.

JV was sold as a physical powerfoward with a NHL shot and speed.  While he does show spurts of it, his supposed physical play was the reason he was picked instead of someone like Nylander.

If he had Motte's tenancy, he'd easily be a physical force.  I'm not even talking about him being the next Bertuzzi or anything... just a bigger and more skilled Jannik Hansen, a more clean Raffi Torres, etc.  Virtanen needs to realize that his offensive prowess is nothing exceptional, that he really wants to take the next leap, he needs to simply his game.  Hit hard, use his speed to hound the puck, park himself around the net for tips and rebounds.  This isn't the WHL anymore, he'll never be the player that regularly carries the puck on the left and snipe it in.

Good Virtanen or Bad Virtanen?!?!?

Last night was Bad Virtanen.  Stupid penalty and then his shot down the wing got blocked which resulted in an opposing goal.  Seems all he can do is skate with the puck in a straight line and hope for the best on that shot but if that shot misses it results in a scoring chance going the other way.  Weak puck retrieval, zero board work and not much physicality is why he doesn't have a permanent spot in the top-6 and why he was deserving of 4th line minutes.  As I said before he is consistently inconsistent so hopefully Good Virtanen shows up next game.  I want him to succeed but man he's got to get going because if last night keeps up Macewen will overtake him in the depth chart.

I agree, big test for him. It’s really up to him. I expect he will stay in shape, Especially with this being a contract year for him.

Jake stay in shape.

He hasn’t come to any camp at the set weight, or in NHL shape.  I like Jake, but (IMO) he is a soft person, who lacks strength of character.

I think he comes back next season in great shape. He knows after having a breakout season, what it'll take for him to play at the top of his game. He seems to be maturing. Which is a great sign for the Canucks.

Jake's an enigma.... because of him being inconsistent. If he becomes consistent like JT Miller, then he will not be an enigma.

I said this from the get go when I watched him play for the Hitmen....many games in junior, he was invisible, didn't know he was even playing.

He needs to be the one getting his hands dirty....not the one pointing his finger.

I just hope his breakout season isn't due to a contract year.

You're describing something very typical, imo, of athletes who were born with natural physical gifts.  Guys who could always rely on ability vs. hard work to dominate opponents and rise up through the ranks.   Very,  very rare is the player on the team with the most talent also the hardest worker night in night out every shift.  Many coaches/gm's have said in the past the biggest obstacle for younger players is consistency and overall professional approach to the game.

What excites me most is not where JV is now, but the distance he's put between where he is now and where he started with us.

Absolutely. He's gone from looking like a big enthusiastic out-of-control puppy dog to being solid, reliable, and noticeable in a positive way almost every shift. And you have to love a young player who sets new career highs in both goals and points year after year after year.

Round is a shape, (with your laugh,Hopefully you weren't meaning that one) :)

Maybe social distance will be good for him, if he follows through with it and works out at home

Hopefully when it ends, he doesn't make up for lost time and lose all the work, if he puts it in

I believe the lure of big money is always a great motivator.

But, he has steadily improved over the past couple of years. I was surprised by his improvement in stick handling and passing this year. He's never really shown that. He's improved his all around game, and the guy's skating is elite. I also believe that he is finally "getting it", and with Miller taking him under his wing, plus being surrounded by amazing players like Pettersson and Hughes, I don't believe we've seen the very best of Jake yet.
