Seriously? Did you really just rip our captain for not over reacting and punching a teammate in the jaw. Bo did take action, by saying something and handling the situation like the leader (and adult) he is. Making a hot head feel stupid for their childish behavior is the best way to handle someone acting out like that. physical altercation a few days into training camp would have been the absolute worst way to handle the situation.

on what basis do you make this statement?

I listened to a recent episode of a canucks podcast. I won't name it because its related some to those terrible TSN1040 folks lol. BUT.. according to them when they were at a scrimmage the other day Jake made a mistake and got beat.. he then got frustrated and ran at a teammate (hitting). Apparently captain Bo wasn't impressed and yelled at him so loud and told him just because you f'd up doesn't mean you get to f'ing run around. Which was then followed by complete silence by everyone on the ice lol.

Now I feel need to name the podcast so you can hear it for yourself. god damn jeff patterson.

https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/vancast-jpat-drancer-show-about-vancouver-canucks/id1481428435  (starts at 16:30) They start talking about the scrimmages at the 8 minute mark.

I fell asleep listening to it last night. Forget exactly where it is in there. (found it 16:30)

As someone who played high level sports with many testosterone filled young men, and has spent their entire adult life working with athletes. Where do you get your punch first talk later?

Nah not a hockey player. I can barely even skate. Couldn't afford equipment as a kid, so my parents got me in soccer. Fun fact though, both my parents played hockey growing up when they were young, and my Mum actually played at quite a high level.

To be fair, if a hockey player thinks they are an expert on altercations, they're lying to themselves. lol

I have a feeling you don't handle altercations well if you think punching someone's the best method. lol

Got in one too many fights? ;)

tbh I'd have been happy with laying the body on Jake.

This is hockey, right, body checking is still aloud?

When did swearing at your teammates become (captain)cool?

I give you Kevin Bieksa

Huh, didn't expect that. Was totally expecting you to go with the recent altercation between the Blues, but sure a 15 year old story from Boom works too.

Regardless, nice interview. Man I loved Bieska when he played for us. Guy has a bright future in media too.

If we were talking about 2 different teams and actual hockey fights I'd agree.

However, it's not unheard of for fights to break out between team members and most of the time it harms the team, which seems to be what you want to happen. It's a terrible situation to have happen and I'm honestly surprised you can't even seem to see that. That's also not the kind of leader Horvat is (in fact, I'd argue what you're implying isn't leadership at all).

While I have always feared what Yung1 was referring to about Jake not being able to reach his potential while playing in his home town I still think he has time to turn the ship around. He will show up to play hard when the season starts but it will be the “hockey iq” or chemistry or mental requirements that gets questioned eventually which is unfortunate. He has a couple years to get his head on right. For his contract value currently he is still and would be a good deal value wise but if he wants to make that next level cheddar on another contract he needs to be “all in” or hes gone once hitting UFA or before.

That's a good example of when someone was being obnoxious and got dummied. But it's not realistic to think that the first stupid thing Fedor said got him dropped; when you take a guy outside (with his buddy no less!) it's most likely a case where things escalated after having told them to stfu.

Similarly, if Virtanen had kept running around after being scolded it's realistic to think Bo would have escalated to the point of roughing him up.

But you don't go from zero to a hundred on a teammate.

I have a hard time believing this stuff. Virtanen was well on his way to a 50 point season. Getting 2PP time. Jake is the type of player Van has to have to be a serious CUP contender. The fact that he is a local kid is a bonus.

Why do people keep lying about easily verifiable facts?

Jake was not “well on his way to a 50 point season”.  He wasn’t even likely on his way to a 40 point season.

He was playing terribly and had been demoted to the 4th line and probably was going to be in the press box for another “lesson” if the season went on.  He had scored zero goals and 1 point in his last 7 games.  To reach 50 points in the final 13 games would have required him to go from a 0.14 PPG pace immediately to more than a point per game.  Unless you believe in magical thinking that isn’t any reasonable reality.

He had a great 6 week stretch in the middle of the season where he scored at close to a point a game.  Before than and after that he was on a .25-.30 points per game average, just like his normal level of production.

You can’t ignore 5 years of production and just take out a little blip where his line got in a heater and say that is the player he is.  I got flamed when I said it was likely a blip... and it turned out to be a blip.

Jeff Cowen turned into Conan the Brabarian by getting on a heater and having a stretch of more than a goal a game... it didn’t make him a 100 goal scorer.
