Coming up to 7 years in the league and you think he'll figure it out now? And I think he's got bigger problems to solve at the moment.

Who knows what it takes for a player to wake up.

It took Kassian a couple of trades and crashing into a tree and getting help.

For JV, it might be almost facing a criminal sentence and seeing his NHL dreams dissapear to wake up

Problem is, we saw glimpses of Kass' play making ability and vision when he played here. Jake is more of a tunnel vision down the wing and shoot type of guy.

So maybe I'm just hoping for a Kassian like turnaround when all evidence points elsewhere..

If my memory serves me right Sandlak scored the winning goal at WJC, and that was it we'll have him. He never became a "star" player. His best years was when he played with Ronning and had Momesso on the other wing, twin towers

Pat Quinn comment on Sandlak : He likes to take a big shot and go for a nice skate...faint praise indeed. This describes Jake a lot of his shifts as well.

Jakes combination of size, speed, physicality and a great shot was what was so tantilizing at the draft.

If he ever learns to protect the puck and cut in from the outside, its game over.

But if that never happens, he'll still be a serviceable bottom 6 player but not enough hockey sense to make him a defensive specialist.

Depends on if he improves off this year. He spent most of the year playing at a 13th forward level. He has to put up more points to justify being so mediocre (at best) defensively). IMO unless he steps it up back to 2019-20 regular season levels, he's headed for the AHL or Europe.

I am just hoping this is all not true but I think no matter what happens, Jake would be better off being traded away from Vancouver.  If he is innocent, I hope he can get a fresh start on another team.  Someone will take a chance on him.  I guess it will be sorted out this summer. B)

IMO Jake will almost certainly be bought out

he will. He still makes 1.4 mil in that process btw. Not exactly a hardship case there.

I'm pretty sure his NHL dreams disappeared already.

Sandlak had a wicked shot coming down the wing. He used his size at times. Don't you think it was another example of a team bringing a young player on to quickly?

Maybe.  Could be the higher expectations of being a 1st round pick as well.  In any case, shows the dangers on relying too much on a short tournament.  Laffs dealt a goalie prospect in future Vezina trophy winner Rask because at least in part the strong Juniors Tournament Pogge had.

True.  And no more low hockey sense guys (dough heads) with our top picks.

For the most part I think you are right. Pretty hard to recover sources 7 years after the fact but the owners liked the size and speed combination but GMJB still had the final say.

Albeit Benning was on the job for only a few weeks at the draft so he likely had to rely on the scout's recommendations.

 and the combine interviews/

JB prior to arriving in Vcr had been scouting for Boston, had attended all the Boston scouting meeting. he was as well appraised of the draft as any other in fact better. He had the views of all the Boston scouts as well as all the Vcr scouts

Jake was the kind of pick an owner would be drooling over.  Hometown kid that can crush the opponents, skate like the wind and has a great shot.  Pretty hard to say who's pick this was.

What coulda woulda shoulda been.

rumor has it he was the owners pick because Luigi Aquailini knows his parents

Could there have been a handshake deal with Boston, that JB stays out of the first round for that 2014 draft?

To my knowledge business doesn't work like that. If they were afraid he'd take his knowledge with him they could have delayed his hiring by not permitting Vcr to talk to him. In legal terms I believe you can forbid a past employee to take files with them but they can't stop you from taking what's in your head. There's more than enough cases won on that premise

The NHL is one big business though, where Benning's future employment could be greatly effected by past behaviors.

Neither of us know that. But I can't understand why an owner would hire a  guy based on his scouting acumen and then under mine that facet of his knowledge. Plus of course we have this evidence

In terms of business the NHL is not that big, think Exxon, Cargill, Mitsubishi then think big. I remember a big case similar to this going to court for a big ( a really big Co.) Continental Grain pushing to have information locked.... they failed

I thought JB had made a point of stating that he left the Boston playbook behind. It was a point of honor for him. None the less, I acknowledge that his memory cannot be wiped clean when coming to a new team but am fairly positive that he went with the Vancouver scouting reports.

Probably on guys he didn't know or didn't have alot of knowledge in.  But for the top picks (1st rounders), I'm pretty sure (my gut feeling, not saying it as a fact) that Benning went with his own instincts/feelings.

OT:  Just noticed your username.  I remember when the Canucks drafted him, I thought the Canucks got one real tough hombre.  The name, playing in the WHL (tons of PIMs lol).  Team Captain of the Pats.  While he wasn't really a great fighter, he never failed to 'answer the bell' when called upon.  Didn't duck anyone (even if it meant being overmatched in a fight).  Never an allstar but had a pretty lengthy respectible NHL career.  You still need these guys of players in your lineup (as well as the "stars").

Jimbo was the Assistant GM in Boston and the head of Scout in Buffalo before that. B)
