Chicken.
crazy Nathan Mackinnon couldn't make these lists.. if only it were playoff only stats lol Virtanen is in some elite company for sure
baumerman77
I think it would be realistic to expect Virtanen to get 45+ goals and 35+ assists for 80+ points next year. Of course I hope he does it in 5-7 less games because he is on the WJC team. The other thing to keep in mind is that Calgary Hitmen are likely going to be a worse team next year. They are going to lose their: second best scorer Brassart, fourth leading scorer Padakin, fifth leading scorer (and top scoring Dman) Helgesen, sixth leading scorer (and second scoring Dman) Roach, seventh leading scorer Tambellini, eighth leading scorer (and third scoring Dman) Rissling, Also their number 1 goalie will be leaving for the AHL too. Out of their top 8 scorers they are only going to keep: Chase (1st) and Virtanen (3rd)
bp79
ill admit i was on the fence with are pick. I im not anymore tho watching jakes game he seems to be able to translate that to the nhl better then ehlers or nylander. the guy is strong yet so dam fast and has a great shot. does anybody else think if by some chance hes cleared for contact in time for training camp he would have a shot at making the team ahead of hunter? hes already got the size and an nhl shot. if a guy like monohan from the flames at 6 last year can make it i dont see y jake couldnt come into camp and impress enough to stick around for 9 games at least. with that i wonder of the 2 if all things equal coming into camp who is more ready hunter or jake? i mention those 2 only because as of now i still think we have some questions on wing in are top 9. i think were set down the middle for now so unless bo plays wing for us i see him going back to the knights and gaunce centering the 4th line. Thoughts?
Joel Heyman
How's Calgarys prospect pool looking? I wouldnt be surprised if they traded Virtanen or Chase for futures if its not looking like they can contend for the next 2 years
thad
Man looking at hockeys future now that Jake and them are on there, we're looking pretty good for quality youth. Still lots of room to fill it out but the names at the top all have the upsides to building a deep and character rich team. Virtanen Shinkaruk Jensen Horvat Gaunce Vey Mccann Demko Cassels Corrado Tryamkin Hutton All quality prospects IMO that have a real good shot of being good nhlers. Add to that Kassian and Tanev already in the show, we're really doing not bad at all.

Thoughts? Even if Virtanen was ready by rookie camp (early September) I very seriously doubt he has a shot at making the team. And personally I think he needs minimum one more year in junior, I would prefer him to stay there for two years though. Shinkaruk needs a full year in the AHL. I wouldn't even call him up for a single game unless we had 4 injured left wingers.

I wouldnt be surprised if they traded Virtanen or Chase for futures if its not looking like they can contend for the next 2 years I don't really know. Scouting CHL team prospects is just a little over my head. Interesting notion though, I would love to see Virtanen get traded to a contender. That being said, I am fairly certain that Jordan Subban will be leaving the Bulls this year to go to a contender. bp79
size isnt everything but when it comes to ehlers and nylander there not even small they are 30 pounds from even being small. all this talk of is the west getting smaller or bigger is moot. kids nowadays in gneral are bigger tougher look at a guy like virtanen his legs are like tree stumps he aint gonna get knocked off the puck. ehlers and nylander will never be big or strong yes they have skill but a lot of that skill is due to inferior players around them allowing them to dingle dangle im sorry i dont see that happening in the nhl. if these guys were supposed to be as good as kane they would have gone top 3 in the draft. and to compare ehelrs and jake is unfair ehelrs played for a much better team in a league that has the worst defence adn goaltending of the chl jake would have scored more if he was on the mooseheads in the q. 5 years from now jake will be poppin 50 in for us while ehlers will be the next daigle just mho

I live in Calgary and the team has been flip flopping back and forth a bit. After being on the top for a number of years they were horrible in 2011-12 and rebounded with 2 solid years. Now they are seriously depeleted I expect them to compete for last place again and I would say there is a pretty good chance one of the two or both get traded during the year.

I wouldnt be surprised if they traded Virtanen or Chase for futures if its not looking like they can contend for the next 2 years I think they should trade both of those guys for futures. They aren't in a position to compete with Portland, Kelowna, Edmonton but they did finish 4th in points in the WHL so maybe they'll push for a Memorial Cup. Virtanen will have a good year next year maybe they surround him with good players and push for a cup.
Derp...
So many variables in the list it's hard to say exactly what it really says about Jake compared to other players, but I do think it is indicative of his ability to score for his size as being a fairly rare commodity. He ranks 5th for WHL players which is pretty good. Guess who is number one? Hunter Shinkaruk... By this measure Hunter is the best scorer to come out of the WHL, which is crazy. I do see his most common comparable's for size and goal totals being Evander Kane, and Taylor Hall, which will be great measuring sticks for Virtanen. I'm almost glad Virtanen had low assist totals for this year, because if he had gotten 40 assists he would have been a top 5 pick for sure at his size speed and skill. He does have a higher GP than a lot of players, but there are very few guys of his size in this group. On top of all of this, we always forget he played half the season on 1.5 shoulders. Thanks for the list Joel Heyman
DeNiro
Only 3 forwards taken in the top 10 in the last 8 years stand out as complete busts to me. Zach Hamill, Nikita Filatov, and Alex Burmistrov.
BanTSN
Burmistrov would have been alright if Winnipeg had properly used him.
MoneypuckOverlord
Burmistrov would have been alright if Winnipeg had properly used him. He was properly used. When a player is not ready they play in the ahl right? That's what Winnipeg did. But he didn't want any of it. So he fled to the khl
