BanTSN
More of the same from what I have seen throughout the year. Dumb penalty resulting in an angry coach and limited ice time, for the most part he's not utilized very well on the 5on4. Most of his offense just comes from picking up speed and trying to go end to end. Watching different games, or perhaps a different player. He was fine, solid on the puck all night long, dangerous, a physical presense, and his team won. Maybe if this was the Q he'd have collected 3 easy points, but it is what it is. He isn't used very well on the power play though. He's already proven that he can score some pretty easy goals with his big shot in the Stamkos spot, but he's rarely put there these days. Maybe it's for the best, as he'd become a one-trick pony then? Overall it's not a big concern. Edited March 19, 2015 by BanTSN

Brick Tamland
Lol get off your high horses superstar. You aren't fooling anyone bud. I doubt you have an above average IQ, unless you prove us otherwise. Well, this will either prove my IQ is above average or it will prove how low yours is. Your sentence of "unless you prove us otherwise." is about as poorly written as it could possibly be. I will rephrase that so you understand. The sentence you wrote is prove of poorly otherwise could be. Again, don't troll above your IQ level, you will be made to look the fool. This message sent from on high, while Brick stands on the superstar owner of multiple high horses... <- wait for it.... there it is...

Brick Tamland
Great to get a first hand commentary/confirmation on Virtanen. You could never have too many big, fast, talented, nasty young players developing in the system. What I find hard to believe is this dude named Brick^^^has any buddies...well, maybe he thinks these guys who he calls his Canucks buddies in Calgary are his buddies. Methinks there is a big chasm between the dude's self-perception and reality. Carry on Cable Guy, carry on. Haha, keep em comin...

Brick Tamland
If he didn't, certain people would complain about that, unfortunately. He's been a force in a physical game. As usual. What I like about him is that he doesn't amp up the physicality unless the game calls for it. Remember when he trolled all of Team USA? Man, that was sweet. The kid is a beauty. He does still take a few too many bad penalties. This is something that can be coached out though. Virts a learner. He isn't like Shane OBrien. BanTSN
Yes we were definitely watching different players. The first period he was complete non factor, he spent 4 minutes in the box and was benched for a large portion of the second period. He came alive in the last 5 minutes of the game, that was it. I guess you might have been watching, but it seems you're trying to find some concerns when there weren't any. This kind of game is typical for the WHL, especially late in the season. Too bad he didn't get on the board, but he had some chances and generated some more. imho Every penalty taken is a 'dumb' one, but unfortunately every player takes them. If Virtanen wants to stick up for a teammate to send a message, then that's fine. That's a typical trait for power forwards. But it's not like his penalties are in the Nick Ritchie dumb penalty stratosphere either. There's a balance. Like I said, it's not like he runs around every game looking for crap to disturb. He normally responds when the game gets to be more physical. This one was a bit rough. Rival, y'know.

MoneypuckOverlord
Or he will quickly be in Desjardins dog house. Thats the only reason i think he doesnt make the team next year. We are all 100% totally fine with him sticking up for his teammates, however if it leads to his team on a PK that's a huge a concern. There are ways to stick up for your team by not taking a penalty or you can take a penalty and both sides end up with a penalty so your team is not on the PK. something like this is crucial in the playoffs. Whatever Jake is doing he needs to "change" it so it doesn't cause a penalty for his team. Any good coach would bench his ass if he continues doing that stuff. Kid's got a lot to learn. Look for him to be back in the DUB next year.

I'm sure you can demonstrate to everyone here that you aren't swimming in the shallow end of the gene pool if given another chance. This dude's^^^^ claim of having an "above average IQ" is frickin' hilarious...thanks for the laugh, Funny Boy. Back on topic...hopefully Jake Virtanen can work out his on ice self-discipline issues while still in junior. Great that the kid plays on the edge, but putting the team in PK trouble with regularity ain't going to cut it in the NHL.
HowYaDrouin
Obviously the Hitmen's coach was in agreement with everyone not named Brick in this thread because he was subsequently benched for the next 4 minutes after he served his time. Standing up for a teammate is when they get ridden into the boards awkwardly, or cheap shotted, or hit up high, etc, it isn't however when a Red Deer player puts a very pedestrian cross-check on your teammate as he plays the puck. That happens so often in the NHL that you wouldn't even notice it, however, what you would notice is a player (Jake) placing that other player in a head lock for no particular reason. He wasn't standing up for his teammates, it was a undisciplined play, and one that will quickly get him sent back to junior next year if he doesn't smarten up. It's this type of play that moreso exemplifies the lack of hockey IQ which "scouts" put on him last year. Not saying he doesn't have a good hockey IQ, but it's these unnecessarily undisciplined plays which makes me understand why he wasn't perhaps ranked higher, and why his icetime seems to be decreased from last year. If you can't trust a player, regardless of their skills (which Jake has in spades), you dont play them. Pretty simple concept.
