Jake Virtanen | #18 | RW

Even if he was completely healthy at the start of training camp he needs another year in junior. I wish the NHL would just push the draft back a year.

The draft used to be for 20-year-olds but was changed in 1979 because of the WHL merger and a potential legal challenge. The age isn't likely going anywhere, but increasing it certainly would reduce the uncertainty and number of early busts.

Virtanen made the ESPN's top 100 prospects list, coming in at #26. From Canucks Army's recap (and for those of you without an ESPN insider account):

http://canucksarmy.com/2014/8/12/4-canucks-prospects-make-espn-s-top-100-list

Of note is the fact that Virtanen's ranking put him behind 5 players that were taken after the Canucks picked him 6th overall this summer, including the likes of Willie Nylander, Nikolaj Ehlers, Kevin Fiala, Haydn Fleury, and Kasperi Kapanen. Disconcerting, but unsurprising, considering Pronman had Virtanen ranked 11th in the lead-up to the draft, behind all of those aforementioned names.

pronman? are we seriously supposed to take a guy with that name seriously?

He's from ESPN. Probably based it off Hockeydb and draft rankings.

Whether or not you like Corey Pronman, he does base his prospect evaluations in large part off of speaking with scouts. He watches video as well, but may not make a lot of games live (based in Florida I think) so it's his opinion based off of the amalgamated scouts consensus.

I hope he makes Team Canada and gets a shot with McDavid and Horvat. That would be awesome to watch.

Or a all Canuck line with Shinkaruk/Mcann - Horvat - Virtanen. After hardly having any of our prospects making the Team Canada team, we now can have as much as 4.

Isn't Shinkaruk too old and McCann didn't receive an invite?

Hunter would be 20 and it's a U20 tournament so he isn't eligible. Part of the reason he played through a tough injury last year was because it was his last chance to make the junior team.

McCann wasn't invited to the summer camp but can still get an invite to the one in December if he plays well enough. By not getting the invite for the summer camp, he doesn't get the extra time to get familiar with the other players, coaches, systems, and show the staff what he can do.

Shinks too old as others have said. McCann wasn't invited to the summer camp but could yet impress and get a call to a later camp. Virtanen and Horvat have a very good chance, with Virtanen just needing to get back into form after his injury and he'll likely make it. Don't forget there's still Subban that could be picked for the D, although that's a stretch at this point.

I don't really see Horvat and Virtanen working as teammates now and maybe in their NHL careers. Virtanen is a different player than Horvat, he crashes and bangs and plays high-pace while Horvat is more of a puck possession player, who plays the game at a slower-pace.

I think they'd compliment each other very well. Jake carries the puck in tries for his shot. Bo is the trailer looking for the rebound. And Hunter could be the speedy playmaker who can also finish and keep up with Jake.

Out of all those names, Fleury would be the only one the Canucks may have selected instead of Virtanen, imho.

Anyone know how fast (not necessarily "good" but "fast) a skater McCann is? A line of Shinkaruk-McCann-Virtanen could potentially be a speedy scoring line.

And if we're going to be negative about recent Canucks draftpicks and make a point over and over again and whine about 'potential big misses on talent', then let's start with Horvat vs. Nichushkin Because Nichushkin is waaaaaaaaaay better than Nylander, Ehlers and co.

Why does that pick get a pass while drafting Virtanen, big, fast dynamic goal-scorer that he is, such a bad call?

Enough already.

Both are great picks!

People actually boarded that train as soon as he was picked.

ARe people here bashing the Virtanen pick? I havn't seen too much of it...Maybe a couple of kneejerk reactions on draft day, but if people don't think one of the biggest, strongest and youngest players at the draft was a great pick they are morons. Ehlers and Nylander will never be as big as Virtanen, but Virtanen could develop more skill
