So this rule applies only the the CHL?  What kind of $&!# is that anyway?

Yes, because only the CHL made this agreement with the NHL to preserve their talent. The league Milano was in before he was drafted is a league where their top talents go to the NCAA route mainly after that one year.

yeah.  doesn't make a lot of sense.  Milano was a USNDTP u-18 player in his draft year, and was comitted to a college team.  shortly after the draft, decided to play in the CHL instead of going to college.  but since he was drafted out of the USHL, the CHL/NHL agreement didn't apply.  Something of a loophole i guess but it takes very specific circumstances to happen.

they should just do away with the whole thing IMO.

Then the CHL would lose their top talent, and who do the fans want to see?

I mean, i get the idea behind it from a CHL team's stand point.  I look at it as a professional hockey fan though.  Having guys playing meaningless seasons in the CHL, as far as their own developement goes, can be a bit frustrating as a fan of a pro team.

But i do totally get it from a junior hockey fans point of view.  that's why the rule will remain.

A LOT of players develop in the CHL. WIthout talent the CHL disappears...where does everyone develop?

The AHL.

This complaint would apply to the neverending argument in this thread, where Virtanen is obviously too good for the CHL, but may benefit from AHL seasoning.

Why should euros and americans be given a pass in this regard, but top CHL prospects are forced to waste away in a teen league?  Reeks.

Like others have said, it's so the fans will fund the CHL in developing players. Yes they can develop in the AHL, but how about the younger players coming up in the CHL?

1- There isn't enough room in the AHL for all those players.

2- Not all players are ready to play against 20+ year old men in the AHL at 17/18.

So, no....

Certainly i'm not talking about all drafted players.  Just the ones who are obviously too good for the CHL.

PS. the CHL is currently losing these players in question to the NHL regardless.

1.  Yes there is.  The AHL is no super stacked league.  It's filled with hundreds of ECHL-level players.

2. Addressed above.

But without those good players the CHL is less of a draw, with less fiscal resources and as a result, a poorer developmental league for everyone else (both financial and in quality of competition).

Not all of them they're not. Freaking Edmonton, EDMONTON sent Draisaitl back to Jr. last season. EDMONTON!

Phoenix sent Domi back last season as well.

Depending on how Virt does in Utica (and possibly the WJC's), he too might also get sent back.

This is debatable.  Kelowna had a stacked team last season, they did well, and their attendance wasn't all that high.  London though has been consistent, attendance-wise for years.  So perhaps more factors are at play.

Another strange case is Sherbak.  19 and in the AHL now.  Last year in the CHL.  So the CHL rules don't apply if he's a euro?  What in the blue hell is that?  If he spent some time in the CHL, then he shouldn't be allowed in the AHL until age 20.

Barbashev's another one.  Why are euros allowed to jump the gun?  Reeks.

They're less likely with the rule implemented. Not all drafted players, yes, but to reduce CHL funding would effect funding for development for younger players in the CHL.
