I myself don't understand peoples need to have others drop down to their level of negativity, sure one of the " Other " guys would be nice right now, but reality is Virtanen is the guy the Canucks selected. Every single draft teams miss out on a guy they should have picked instead of the player they did, guys like Forsberg and Larkin for example. That said if the draft was a sure thing, with no subjectivity or risk, the leauge would just hand out the next guy on the list and there would be no need for teams to pre-scout, do interviews, dig into family history, talk to coaches and teammates, watch hours of game footage, travel around the world to see them in person, ETC, ETC, ETC. That's what makes the draft so fun, you don't truly know who picked a winner or a looser until at least 4 or so years after the draft. Right now It's a tad early to say with absolute certainty, but it looks like halg the league messed up not selecting Boeser, sure makes things like drafting Virtanen sting less. Also, for all we know drafting Nylander or Ehler's would have made management push harder last year and this for playoffs instead of just letting things fall where they have and we would have picked outside of the top 5 this year and last, as well as traded away some picks and prospects for players in the kin of Derek, Roy . . . Maybe Virtanen figures it out in one of the next 2 year and maybe he busts out of even the AHL. We will just have to wait and see, so at this point I chose to be positive and hope he can become that 20 goal, hard hitting, pain in the ass fore-checker that every team would love to have ( or possibly has ) . I feel like Boeser and Virtanen cancel each other out development wise. Benning struck good with Boeser and is still waiting on Jake who has been surpassed by several draft peers. Virtanen can still develop into a 2nd liner though, he's only 20. He is so much like Kreider...

Whether he makes it to the roster is another story, but personally, I'd rather have him spend another year down in Utica for further development. At 21, he's still very young, and maybe he won't be an elite player, but hey, if he turns into a good second liner, i'm happy about that. he's made remarkable progress from since being sent down to recently. his maturity is starting to show as he's spent the season in the AHL. i'm excited for him for next season. and very curious to see what he brings to the table in the training camp.

That's on you not the rest of us. Lost on you though is all the rest of our prospects that are making strides. While you sit and continue to rehash the past we're moving on. Continue trying to find or formulate an argument here. But you're not getting one no matter what kinda bait you dangle. Just pity...and lots of it Jake's been making good progress, I'm expecting him to explode offensively next season. It seems like his weight down to 216 has caused him to become a much more effective player on the ice. who woulda guessed ;P

Discussing a total draft whiff (yes, let's call it for what it is) is totally relevant on a hockey forum, your love life connection speaks more about yourself than any other poster. What's sad is the endless complaints directed at these kinds of posts. Don't like something, offer a counter argument or ignore. It's that simple. It's time to stop acting like you own this forum. If posters feel the need to express discontent, they're perfectly entitled to do so. Well to start fairly sure Warhippy is married sooo, yah. Second, there is nothing wrong with stating that it would have been better for the canucks had they taken X, Y or Z player, but at a point, get over it, move on. The horse is dead, beaten, stabbed, flayed, flambayed, disintegrated, reanimated and killed all over again. MOVE ON FFS! Get a new hobby, go outside, meet someone, fall madly in love and fade away into the sunset but just shut up about what could have been. Who did we draft? Virtanen! Who is this thread about? VIRTanen! Who should be be discussing? VIRTANen! When do we want him? VIRTANEN! , I mean, when he is ready to contribute to the team in a meaningful manner. Until such time as he makes the team or fades off into the sunset himself what purpose does moaning about the past do? Make you feel better for picking the right favor of booster juice today? Well slow clap to you my friend. Edited April 12, 2017 by R35Godz1lla

I wouldn't call our reaction an allusion based on hindsight, it is more like pure frustration from over a decade of poor drafting. When we haven't drafted and developed a top 6 player since Ryan Kesler, with nearly a decade and half of drafting, until this year with Bo Horvat, I think we have been kind of on edge when it comes to our ability to do so. Every time we miss a pick, it will hurt when you have such a long gap between those that actually do work out for you. The only reason why we are in this mess that we are in today is because we were unable to draft and develop players that could take over top line duties. The Virtanen pick was crucial to getting our "retool/rebuild/transition" on the right foot, but we stumbled. Thankfully, I think that is about to change with Horvat, Boeser and others that have been acquired and those yet to be picked.
kenhodgejr
Even if Jake has to play another season or half season in Utica thats not a bad thing. I can see Jake taking Eriksson's job.
Nave
We gotta be patient with Virtanen. He's got all the tools, just not the toolbox. Benning and Linden seemed encouraged by his progress in Utica. One more season down there would do him good, but I wouldn't be surprised if he made the big club next season.

It's time to stop acting like you're doing anything more than complaining about the situation or acting like a pouting child that got happy meal toy B instead of happy meal toy A We may have missed on Virtanen. Nylander and Ehlers look like stars. Great. Move on with your life. I say this having watched us pass on Jagr. It's ok. Mistakes might have been made. Move on **edit Understand I'm not saying we didn't miss on this pick. But that's not gonna change a thing. Nylander and Ehlers look awesome Jake at this point certainly doesn't. That's not gonna change the pick. Neither will endlessly complaining about it This was the reason why they passed on Jagr. Quote According to Craig Patrick, the former Penguins general manager who drafted Jagr 26 years ago, the Czech winger did his best to manipulate the draft so that he could end up in Pittsburgh playing alongside Mario Lemieux. As one of the top prospects in the 1990 class, Patrick said that the Penguins, who had the fifth overall pick, were surprised that Jagr was available when it was their turn to pick. But, as it turns out, it may have come down to more than just luck. “I found out years later that when he was interviewed by teams ahead of us, he told them all that he wasn’t coming over [to the NHL] right away,” Patrick recently told reporters at a Penguins alumni golf outing. “When we asked him that question, he said ‘I’ll be there tomorrow if you draft me.’ I think other teams backed off because of that. We were happy he was there. We were surprised he was there, definitely.” Jagr was reportedly willing to make more of a commitment to the Penguins than the four teams that picked before them — the Nordiques, Canucks, Red Wings and Flyers — because he “idolized” Lemieux. Jagr has always seemingly been a guy who marches to the beat of his own drum, and apparently that started at a very young age. Most young kids just let the process play out and relish the opportunity to play professional hockey, regardless of what sweater they end up wearing. You can call it manipulation or call it unfair, but it worked…and it worked well. Jagr not only got to join the Penguins and play with Mario, but they won back-to-back Stanley Cups together in 1991 and 1992. http://www.foxsports.com/nhl/story/how-jaromir-jagr-may-have-manipulated-the-1990-nhl-draft-in-his-favor-090116

He's progressing much better than he was a yet ago now in Utica and looking to have his confidence back. After his ELC +1 contract runs out and he looks to be going no where Europe seems like a good option. Drew Shore can give him some pointers on that.
