I know a couple of our young guys like Jake, Baertschi and Vey trained with Vancouver's strength and conditioning coaches in the summer, but I don't recall seeing McCann being mentioned as doing so. Kind of disappointing seeing as how that trio has improved their fitness by a good margin and McCann doesn't look to have made much improvement in terms of size and strength. Like you said, it looks like it's the only thing keeping him off the opening night lineup and I feel like if he had put in the work with our other guys he'd have put himself in a really good position to make it.

too bad that trainer guy couldn't teach Vey how to win a f***in face off. ..but hey, right glad I am that his push-up techniques are getting better

We should add a bit of AHL seasoning for McCann. With all those injuries the past few years, he hasnt had a solid workout schedule. Virtanen seems NHL ready physical, but has to work on his instincts and line chemistry. McCann is the opposite. I think if we develop him properly he could be the replacement we have needed for Kesler.

Good point I forgot about face offs, based off the game recap he lost 11 and won 2

Those aren't exact stats but terrible against mostly prospects

his face offs have been a joke since he got here. I don't really give a crap how a players physical condition is.....I'm more interested in the job that said player has.....

Take Kessel for example....not the poster boy for conditioning.....but he does his job of scoring.

Vey's biggest job...win faceoffs

The way I see it, if he continues to impress then he should get a 9 game look; regardless of size because Johnny hockey was also tiny and they had to make a decision with him. Stop obsessing over size we have enough, Mcann is something this team lacks, which is a solid play maker, but let's see how he does overall. If he continues to impress then I say we give him the 9 games you got nothing to lose, OHHHHHHHHH WAIT OHHHHHHHHHHH WAIT were talking about the Canucks'

The only problem with that is that if he makes the team, it will be in a fourth line role, and there's always the worry that the player will lose his offensive instincts being pidgeonholed there

Most of these eastern boys train out of their local area, for example bo stays in Ontario, McCann was probably training elsewhere, as naturally he's not really a very big player anyways.

surely McCann can also win a freaking face-off too. If I was Benning I would put Vey on waivers and send him on a plane to France to join the Comets. If someone plucks him then they can take his cap hit too

nah....I like to think of that way as the AV treatment.....

"You want to be in the top 6....you must learn the bottom 6 first and earn your way to the top 6"

Sadly if you look at are depth chart he's either going to play in that role at some point or convert to wing if he wants to make our team in the near future

Henrik is signed until the end of 2018, Sutter is signed until the end of 2020, and Horvat is 20 years old. It's going to be pretty hard for him to bump any of those players out of a spot.

Such a drama Queen.

He's getting a good look. Our club has been very patient with the prospects and that will continue.

These players (McCann, Cassels, Shinkaruk) all know what they're up against depth wise. There's nothing wrong with forcing them to dig deep to improve. They'll actually end up better for it.

Having said that, McCann may get his 9 game trial because for him it's either the Canucks or back to Junior. I expect him to be sent down and play a big role on the World Junior team. This may still happen to Virtanen except he has the body for the NHL (208) while McCann does not (179). I hope that Virtanen's goal means that he is beginning to relax and find his game.

McCann really does have a future with the Canucks as a play maker imo.

There is depth in our line up finally. We have pressure coming from the young guys, pushing the vets to play well or get replaced. McCann may not be ready yet, bet he's really close. I wonder if he can take that 4C spot over Vey?

"AHL seasoning" cannot start until next year. That means at least 2 years away for McCann? Also, have you seen any evidence in the games that he is not physically capable of handling himself? He's listed as 20lbs lighter than Vey, but who's more physical and stronger on the puck?

You say that like it's a bad thing. We should be so fortunate to have three solid centers and another one who's showing potential enough to challenge them. In the past, we were scraping the bargain bin just trying to fill the roster down the middle.

Recall the recent Vey interview by Botchford. Vey knows it's "show me" time.

And if McCann won't challenge for a roster spot this year because he needs a year of pro first (which may well be true). Cassels IS getting a year of pro play in the AHL this year and WILL be ready to push next year.
