Jared McCann | C/LW

This kid is Kesler 2.0, drafted early 20's, essentially same height, same projections (3rd line/2nd line forward), both two-way centres, great shots. This pick was a steal at 24, another notable comparison is Patrice Bergeron.

except when we drafted Kes his wrist shot was terrible.

And it still is.

Just way too slow of a release.

He has a very Jonathan Toews-esque skating style. I'm not saying he'll be Toews or anything but their stride and posture while skating is quite similar. Both have deceptive speed and are good laterally. Both good hands while in stride too.

I agree..first impression when seeing him skate in the highlight package was Jonathan Toews a well. Even if he becomes half of Toews he'll still end up as a pretty good pick

This kid certainly looks like he has no.1 center potential, he definitely seems to be way more skilled than Kesler was at the same age.

This pick absolutely makes the Kesler trade a winner considering the circumstances.

I'm interested to see how he compares to our other centres at the prospects camp. I think he is going to be right up there skill wise, just a little less weight, but has a little more speed.

I agree. This pick to me reminds me of the Cassels pick last year in the sense that alot of people questioned the pick because of other players available but once everyone get a chance to see him play nobody will ever complain about this pick again.

People also have to remember that this pick was made at 24th just 1 pick ahead of Boston at 25th a team that JB should of knew their draft list top to bottom so I think JB had a really good feel of what players were on the board at the time so that makes confident JB made a good selection with this pick.

When he was drafted by the London Knights originally in the OHL draft, he was touted to have very high skill set, went 2nd overall, one slot behind Connor McDavid who had the exception status into the draft.

He still has that untapped elite skill in him, we need to help him develop properly to find that hidden elite skill that he was scouted for. I like the possibilities with McCann.

I like this pick a lot and agree that he has sneaky potential to be a 1C. This is not based on his numbers last year, which were underwhelming for a first round pick, but the skills he clearly has. If the results ever catch up to them, he'll be a good one.

His points weren't underwhelming when you take into account he's more concerned with playing responsible defensively than putting up points.

Canucks army guys spoke to the Soo coach about him in this podcast, they talk about virtanen and McCann and other picks we made up to about the half way point.

Jared part starts at 8 mins.

Basically says the coach thinks he is too good of a 200 foot player. He's so strong positionally he doesn't take offensive risks other prospects take, but they are going to work with him to improve him offense this year, and rely on him more. The skill is there he just is always D first, but that's not a bad spot to be for a guy who's already PPG.

Good signs that he's willing to do that, however, you only get glimpses of top-notch offensive skill. He kinda reminds me of Brendan Morrison for some reason.
