Markstrom in his first year of 6x6 is really starting to slow down and the Flames are going down with him. This is sadly going to age like the Eriksson contract, JB has learned of the risk of these to older players.

Demko on the other hand of course could still go one of two ways, but he's consistently shown flashes of brilliance despite playing behind a very average team. I would have preferred a bridge deal just to get us through the next tight couple of years (hoping that the cap goes up in 3-4 years) and we'll have some big relief when Eriksson and all those extra cap hits (Luongo, Spooner, Baertschi) are off the books. 3 x 3.5-4M would have been ideal for me, but then you really run the risk of having to re-sign Demko in the peak of his career when he can command stupid money. For JB, 5x5M is the safe bet.

Another big wildcard in all of this is Ian Clark. If they can't keep him, Demko's play will no-doubt drop off and we can't really blame JB (directly) or Demko for that. Management have to make re-signing Clark a priority now. Petey and Hughes will be fine but Clark is going to gain attention from all the other teams if JB doesn't lock him up ASAP.

Granted that we opted to give Demko a lengthy deal, I wonder if this changes what we'll do with Petey and Hughes in particular, JB might be keen to try them on bridge deals. I've got a feeling they'll have similar deals though. What will probably happen will be 5x7M for Petey and 5x6.5M for Hughes.

You can't even write a script for a better career trajectory.

I remember reading about this San Diego kid who was a top goaltender in his draft class.

A couple weeks later, we nabbed him in the second round.

Kid has a marvelous career at Boston College, comes to Utica and becomes arguably their best player in short-order. Learns the ropes under Marky, has that spectacular playoff performance. Takes a couple weeks to adjust to his new role as starter on a weak defensive team, gets locked into a groove and shuts it down. A few short months later, he gets a contract that sets him up in a big way without hurting the team. Now we've got our starting guy locked up for our competitive window.

I love this kid. This is what they call "development".

You can piss all over Green, Benning, and co. but they got this one right from day 1. Flawless execution.
But really, it's all Thatcher. He's that good.

Too think, Calgary needed a franchise goalie and had a shot at getting him in 2014! Demko was far and away the top goalie prospect that draft, analysts thought he would be going in the 20's and we got him in the 2nd round.

Calgary drafted ahead of Vcr in 2014 and in the second round chose Mason McDonald at 34 O/A. Vr took Demko at 36 ie Calgary could have had Demko but decided McDonald was the better bet

You are not acknowledging the fact that  canucks had a hand in demko’s development

They did well in developing Demko, it took quite a while but in the end they got the player they had envisaged

Bubble Demko. Such a perfect nickname and sets the table for the future.

Every time the Canucks get in the playoffs in the next 10 years its gonna be OMG if bubble Denko shows up look out we could go far.

Teams are going to be afraid of it lol. So great.

Incredible high quality saves by Demko last season.

He was always being groomed to be the number one. Last season he finally arrived.

He's taking another step this season with a better team in front of him. I wouldn't be surprised if he's top 10 for most of the season, top 5 by the end of the year.

The young man is that good
