Reading the proposed rules for expansion draft...unsigned rookies after 2 years are available for the draft. The draft is going to be this summer because teams will be playing for the 16-17 season. We either have to sign demko this offseason or let him pretty much for sure get taken in the draft. damn...

I think the NHLPA would take some issues with that as NCAA draftees cannot sign while in school, unless they are willing to turn pro

Reports going around right now are: Teams will be able to protect 1 goalie, 3 defense, 7 forwards. Or 8 total skaters of their choosing. Players with under 3 years PRO experience will be exempt

Demko is a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker award.

10 shutouts will do that, lol.

So will fan voting when it comes to Canucks fans and their online presence.

But also a finalist for the goalie award:

That wouldn't include NCAA players. The rule for the entry draft is unsigned junior players (CHL) would re-enter the draft is not signed after a time period, like everyone was freaking out about with Subban. NCAA players stay RFAs until a time period after their final college season, and would never be eligible to re-enter the draft. The same idea applies for players overseas, where RFA vs UFA comes into play, but not re-entering the draft.

They'd only consider the players eligible to re-enter the entry draft as a result in the category you're talking about since those players would be lost to their original teams anyway.

I know you're kidding around, but it wouldn't be this summer so we'd absolutely leave him unprotected as a pending UFA if the draft went ahead next summer. Not that a team would be likely to take a pending UFA (although Vegas could be a likely destination for Miller if he got the opportunity) but we certainly would have been at a point where we were letting him go to UFA anyway.

ESPN is reporting this rule

"Unsigned draft picks (think college or European players) are exempt from the expansion draft for two years from their draft year but not in Year 3, so teams will have to either rush to sign those guys or simply expose them in the expansion draft. "

Thatcher Demko will be eligible for the expansion draft if he is not signed this summer.

Tonight against the AVS!!!

Nah jk.. We need to tank so its best to keep him in the ncaa for now

Once his NCAA season is over, it would be great to get him signed and in Utica.  He could really help them on a potential playoff run, like Markstrom did last season.

If he goes the distance in the finals when will it be over? Cant wait to see this guy. He is going to be something special. Anyone hear anything on the goalie the flames chose over Demko?

If his team makes it all the way the last game is April 9th.

As for the Lames goalie prospect, any team with Brian Burke around will have no clue about goaltending.

Not so sure about that. What I've seen is young players with under 3 years pro experience would automatically be protected, and I'd think that would include unsigned RFAs in college. Unsigned junior players would re-enter the regular draft so I don't even see the need to include them in expansion draft talks. It wouldn't make sense to have a player in college who intends on returning another year (so a team couldn't sign them) unprotected; you couldn't force a player to sign and go pro just to protect him from expansion if he wanted another year in the NCAA.

Demko would have completed his 4th year of college by next summer anyway, so we'd have to sign him regardless. He'll likely sign this summer so that'd make it a moot point.
