I know the KHL club was carrying quite a few Ds and the kid's minutes seemed to be declining. Maybe just a matter of trying to get him more icetime. Would have preferred to see him play the full year in the K though. Between the Russian economic issues and now this demotion (MHL is the junior league for the KHL), maybe it's time for the Canucks to start looking at options to spring this kid from Russia earlier than planned. Kontiola is a former seventh-round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks and spent the last five seasons playing in the Russian-based league. The 29-year-old Finn also won a bronze medal while representing his country at the Sochi Olympics and earned a silver at the IIHF World Hockey Championship in May. Known primarily as a playmaking centre, he amassed 112 assists and 175 points in 258 regular-season KHL games for Traktor and Metallurg Magnitogorsk.In 12 NHL games with the Blackhawks during the 2007-08 season, Kontiola had five assists. Good find and good to know that players have that option. Still have doubts that Tryamkin would bail on his team or his contract in that matter. By some accounts (cdc and blog writers no real meat to the story) he is still really working hard on his english to ensure his transition is smoother coming to NA and a team with no Russians speaking players outside of Pedan. He also was very very adamant about wanting to honour his contract which really stands out for me because I am unsure how excited I would be for a guy who would bail on his team and country for a better deal the first chance he got. He's been loudly outspoken about honouring it so all the power to him. That being said if the option IS there for him and he DOES want out, the Canucks should do everything in their power to get him on NA ice as fast as possible and acclimated to the language and the style of play here. Amish Rake Fighter Posted December 28, 2014 Share Posted December 28, 2014 (edited) I'm not sure if Tryamkin just got sent down in the last day or so or if he got back from the MHL on the 24th. It looks like Tryamkin is back with the big club after being away from the team for 11 days up until the 24th. Unless he's gone again, he's been back for 2 games, could have been an injury or a conditioning stint or a kick in the ass. Right now, with Avto is on the bubble for a playoff spot, Tryamkin is the youngest guy on the team and he looks like it sometimes so he's not going to get a lot of ice time. He's been playing but, because KHL teams dress 8 defencemen, they can give him 8-10 shifts without taxing the remaining D corps. I remember JB talking about Tryamkin being 265 lbs. at the draft. So, was surprised when training stats showed him to be much lighter (same with MacKenze Stewart). Would have to agree the KHL stats must tweeked a little regarding weight etc. He does not seem as stacked as Byf. Byf is 2 inches shorter. His ice time has been especially low lately. Earlier in the season, Tryamkin was averaging around 16 minutes per game, while occasionally playing over 19 minutes. He hasn’t played more than 15 minutes a game since the end of November, however, and he’s played around 12 minutes or less since mid-December. The drop in ice time is partly due to the addition of veteran defenceman Alexander Loginov, who is averaging a little over 17 minutes per game for Avtomobilist since being signed at the end of November. For what it’s worth, his plus/minus of plus-1 is third among Avtomobilist defencemen, with most of the team in the minus category. Avtomobilist simply isn’t very good, though they’re managing to hang on to a playoff position despite a record that is well below .500. Tryamkin leads Avtomobilist in hits with 58 and is third on the team in blocked shots with 32. That’s not necessarily a good thing, of course, as in order to throw a hit or block a shot, the other team has to have the puck. Tryamkin is listed at 120 kg on the KHL website, which is 264.5 lbs. By way of comparison, Tom Sestito weighs 228 lbs, while Zdeno Chara weighs 255 lbs. The heaviest player in the NHL is Dustin Byfuglien at 260 lbs. Tryamkin is bigger than Byfuglien and is still only 20 years old. He is a big, big dude. It’s worth taking that measurement with a grain of salt, of course, as Tryamkin certainly doesn’t look Byfuglien-sized in that highlight video, though other weights on the KHL website do not seem to be inflated.
