I like Rathbone's skill, but he has some bite (almost meanness) in his game too. 1 1

He would have only played 2 full years? But I believe the threshold for year counting is 10 games. He played 13 with us in 2015/16. Then all of 206/17. I believe as soon as he signs & passes 10 games in a new season he will be eligible to be selected / need to be protected. That could be as soon as the end of this year. Someone can (please, please) prove that theory wrong? Playoff games in 2019/ 20 count? Or just regular season I wonder?

Not eligible now but likely will be when/if he re-signs and plays 10 or more games. That said, depending on what other moves we might make in the interim (Barrie?) and how Tryamkin fairs when he returns/if he sticks around, how OJ, Rathbone, Briesebois, Woo etc all develop... I'd not be shocked to see Myers exposed in the ED either Frees up $6m and a roster spot...just saying. Definitely a thought! Would rather load up Markstrom, Roussel, Myers, Tryamkin for ED, sign Barrie. We wont come out that worse for wear if we lose one... We can also protect 4 forwards, 4 D; Pettersson, Boeser, Horvat & one of Miller / Ferland. Protect Tryamkin, Myers, Juolevi, Barrie? Depends how players are stacking up at that stage. But I would think you are right; expose Myers.

Those are red flags for an early pick (which would be why we didn't spend a 3rd on him either) but once you get to the 4th...if you like the kid, you take a flyer and can afford to be patient. Yeah, for those who don’t know the story (from 2017 article): Quote Rathbone plans to stay local when next season rolls around, and he has his reasons. The biggest one is his younger brother Teddy, who was diagnosed as autistic at a young age. Teddy is 8 years old, making good strides with his speech therapy and flourishing in an integrated classroom at the Joyce Kilmer School. For that reason, Jack would prefer to stick around for a while. “He’s a big piece of my life, and I’m going to be honest, it would be tough to leave him for seven months out of the year at this stage,” said Jack, the oldest of Jason and Beth Rathbone’s three children. “He’s probably my best friend. So being able to stay home, being able to complete my four years at Dexter — they took a financial risk on me and my sister (Jayne), we wouldn’t be able to afford an education there — being able to finish my four years and getting my diploma, that means a lot to me and my family.” Jason Rathbone, who played four years at Boston College and coached Jack with the South Shore Kings and Cape Cod Whalers, said Jack has played a big role in helping him and his wife in the everyday care of Teddy. “Jack has helped my wife and me so much with Teddy,” said Jason. “It could be as severe as Teddy having a seizure and Jack has been there to help him get on his side and deal with it. Or it could be as simple as going swimming with him. We’ve got a little in-ground pool in the back, and Teddy always wants to go swimming, and my wife and I can’t always be there. Jack is always willing to hop in the pool with him and be with him.” Whatever he gives to Teddy, Jack said, he gets back more in return. “I hope to be a role model for him, but I don’t think he can learn any more from me than I learn from him,” said Jack. “His personality and the attitude that he brings to everyday life, he gives me a new perspective. He’s what drives me every day to be able to chase the dream of playing in the NHL one day because I know that he can’t. It’s tough to see. But at the same time, to see him at a family skate at Dexter, and just bringing him out on the ice, just little moments like that to see how happy he is, it’s what drives me to become the best player possible.” https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.bostonherald.com/2017/06/15/west-roxbury-nhl-prospect-jack-rathbone-has-priorities-in-right-place/amp/ So, if you didn’t already love Jack Rathbone, you do now. I came here because I love Tryamkin, only to find my love for Rathbone grow! This young man appears to have all the mental and emotional qualities needed to thrive in big moments, I just hope he signs. Another interesting part of the draft clip was JB's confidence in Gunnarsson, that one appears to be a miss. 21 hours ago, Elias Pettersson said: Risto is a minus machine. I agree, I'd rather let these other picks play out, attempt to bring back Tryamkin and use FA market, as with Myers and Benn, to fill any big holes. Trading for an asset like Risto would be foolish IMO, as his price would be way too high.

I’m pretty confident Rathbone will sign (assuming he’s offered a contract). He’s made a number of statements since being drafted that demonstrate his commitment to Vancouver. He’s a very loyal and high character individual and he’s already shown that he feels obligated to reward organizations that take a chance on him (like Dexter). He’s really the last person I’d ever expect to hold out for college free agency. Assuming he continues to develop well, he’ll be a Canuck when he’s ready to turn pro. 3 2

One play I liked was when his defensive partner started losing a puck in the crease and towards Try's side. Rather than join those two players mucking for the puck he skated past them to the open man on the other side of the crease. The open man wanted to cherry pick for a garbage goal. The puck ended up in the corner but the crease was covered. Because Try didn't get caught chasing. They are not coaching him to do offense much. Hopefully we will.

A bit of a shame because during 2017-18 and the first half of 2018-19, it seemed like he got much more offensive opportunities. And he looked good several times I watched him, either in power play or with top forward lines at 5v5. A couple games I’d have rated him their best offensive D (and one of the best on defense as well). I get that offense isn’t necessarily his forte and that part of development is often specialization, but I’d have hoped he’d continue to get offensive looks and build more of a 2-way game over there than just a shutdown/matchup/PK role. Not that there’s anything wrong with a hulking defensive specialist Dman. Just feel like Tryamkin has more tools than that. 2
