He's bottom pairing on an average KHL team, that's a far cry from NHL top 4. He never did play the physical game of a big guy, and offensive upside is limited. So, the appeal is what? A 7th D that doesn't use his size? Best we could hope for Tram is a rebuilding team wants to give him a shot for a mid-round pick, like we did with Philip Larsen and the Oilers. I think that's why at this point you hope you can sign him on a cheaper deal for 1-2 seasons, give him a go and see where he fits on your NHL roster. If he doesn't fit with the team then trade him for a low round pick. I don't think he has much trade value anyways, so better to just hold for now on this prospect or else we will be selling very low on him. At least if we can get him in games end of this season we can see where he is at and get a better sense of his "NHL" worth.
Attila Umbrus
I'll also come out and say i'm a big Tree fan and I hope he does come back and make an impact on our blue line. But if he comes back and it's more of the same sour Tree we seen last time I wouldn't be heart broken to see him traded for picks.

He's been regularly played 20+ mins a night when he's in. He's been utilized more as a defensive dman and has been a crease clearer. Does he need to fight regularly to be "physical"? Some of his highlights as a Canuck were of him knocking guys over easily because of his size which included guys like Getzlaf. He's the top +/- guy for his team for those that love to use that stat to talk down players. 1

86Viking
Really hope big T comes back to the Canucks, loved his game when he was here. That size is awesome and he barely looked like he put any effort into some of his hits and the opposition fell down or looked like they got crushed. Give him another chance for sure imo, Tanev is a pending UFA, not sold on giving him any new contract with term with his injury history. I know he is paired with Quinn, but Hughes could play with anyone imo. So pair him with the recent high paid NMC UFA D signing in Myers going forward. Next fall: Hughes Myers Edler Stech/Big T Benn Stech/Big T

Fantenburg, Sautner, or even the possibility of Tryamkin could still work well for us into a playoff run. Highly doubt that we are Cup Finalists with Tanev,. But still a chance of 2-3 rounds without him. Get something for Tanev. I think that’s a priority over anything else.

He was as physical as you can expect from a rookie NHL d-man. It's okay if you didn't watch that season of Canucks' hockey. I sometimes wish that I hadn't and used those 200 hours to perfect my nunchuck skills.

Bottom pairing on his team? This year he is first in shifts per game, first in plus minus, and second in icetime per game. What would his numbers would be like if he wasn't a bottom pairing Dman? Never played physical? What do you expect him to do, break bones in everyone he plays against instead of just the occasional player? I guess you have never watched him play? Kanukfanatic
What is the argument here? Stecher is a good 3rd pairing small D in the NHL. Tryamkin is probably an average 3rd pairing huge D in the NHL. Stecher probably has a bit more skill but Tryamkin is a beast who broke a guys back by leaning on him. They bring different skills. Me personally, I am so sick of the weak "punch me in the face repeatedly" Canuck team that I lean towards Tryamkin....that is if the russian even ever comes back.

Keep in mind he isn’t lighting up the KHL, a lesser league..... Now this is just my opinion but, IMO, it's HIGHLY unlikely we're back next year with both Tanev and Stecher. Both are on expiring contracts and due raises (and Tanev's on the wrong side of 30 and injury prone...albeit still very good and meshing well with Hughes). So at least one is likely to go...if not towards this TDL, this summer (whether trading Stecher's RFA rights if it's summer, or Tanev walking as an 'own rental'). We'll likely have Tryamkin back and Juolevi, Brisebois, Rafferty, Teves, Sautner etc all pushing for bottom pair minutes as well as Rathbone and Woo likely to be coming up behind them and in the AHL as call ups next year. We can't keep them all...bodies will need to move (and likely for guys on affordable ELC/bridge deals as other players get raises). As much as I'd personally prefer us to move Tanev at the TDL (after hopefully pumping his trade value. playing healthy, with Hughes most of the year), I don't know if the team will have any appetite for it if we're pushing for playoffs. And as much as I love the local kid who works his arse off, on and off the ice, and plays 25lbs bigger than he is...he's likely the more 'replaceable' (third pair...albeit 2nd pair capable) player and arguably has higher trade value given his age, health history, RFA status etc. I wonder if there'd be a fit with a capped out team like Vegas towards the TDL or in the summer... Something like Stecher + Virtanen +/- for Tuch? Gives them a solid, young, inexpensive, RFA right D and a 'Tuch-light' replacement. Both at likely a very similar cap hit to Tuch on his own. We upgrade our 2RW and clear space for our logjam of D. If we do end up moving either during the season, we do have bodies (Fantenburg included) to fill in there with still plenty of depth for injuries.

I think Stecher is the one that gets dealt as he's still an RFA so teams would be trading for some time prior to UFA there, so thats worth something. But in all likihood I see one of them simply walking as a UFA. Its not as critical as it was say 3 or 4 years ago to recover a mid-round pick. We still gain the roster spot and salary cap space when one guy walks, and thats all the team really needs. Picks are a nice bonus. Swapping Nikita for Stecher is kind of a no-brainer, you'd make that trade any day imo. 1
