What if he is a game controlling monster (Aka Webber). What if, players can't get to the net, when he is on the ice? Should Jim Benning pass on that opportunity? Should he just pass on the chance to find out? Is it a GM's responsibility to make those decisions without an actual tryout? Do Gm's have that ability to know who is good enough or not, by just knowing? This line of questions was born by the fact that some nay sayer's, actually think they know. I applaud the ability to know this, without even seeing him compete. I wonder why they are not employed by the NHL? Just a thought while driving down the road. I don't even think we need to worry about that part... if he is a 3rd pairing guy, he is worth what he has been asking. I would sign him to a 3 year, $2 million per contract so we have him club controlled for a little while. All he has to be is an upgrade on Benn for that price... and that is 2-3 times what he could make in the KHL. Hopefully he signs with some term rather than just walking to free agency. There is obviously an ideal spot for him beside Hughes. That doesn't mean he would really be a top pairing D, because he wouldn't get the PP minute Quinn would... so Tryamkin in that spot probably plays 16-18 minutes a game which would likely be 4th-5th in ice time amongst defenders. We would need a solid all around pairing to take bigger 5v5 minutes and PK time to complement that though. Schmidt-Hamonic could actually be really good at that.
Kootenay Gold
One of the big questions that I have is who makes up the 6 D that play next year and who is watching from the sidelines. I have Edler, Hamonic, Tryamkin, Myers, Juolevi, Hughes and Schmidt as the most likely players in the mix. Benn will either move at the TDL or become a FA this summer. Status of Edler is uncertain and may come down to price, term and any special clauses that he might want. Probably the same for Hamonic - price, term and Probably a NMC. If Edler is back; it could be that Juolevi slots in as the spare. Hope that is not the case but certainly a possibility.

If we have both Edler and Hamonic that seems likely... though one would think that you would try to keep Edler’s minutes and games to begin more limited. If each Edler and Juolevi played around 50 games (slightly more than half assuming someone else gets hurt over the course of the season and they both play in some of the same games).... that would cause me zero headaches or worry. We have Schmidt and Tryamkin who can play both sides so pairings in case of injuries can always get worked out. Hughes-Tryamkin Schmidt-Hamonic Edler/Juolevi- Myers Rathbone as 1st extra injury call up would get a reasonable number of games with how many injuries we always have. Those pairings allow Hughes to play fewer 5v5 minutes and be more PP focussed. Tryamkin and Hamonic probably end up really having the least ice time as they wouldn’t play special teams often.

We will have around $5-6 million to sign 8 players once we have Petterson and Hughes on bridge deals in the $6.5-7million range. One can hope expansion helps us or we are allowed to buy out players like Holtby.
Kootenay Gold
Not sure how it is all going to play out but unless Seattle takes Holtby , he will be still on the team next year. Dipietro is not ready for prime time yet esp. since he has barely played at all this past year and any decent replacement for Holtby would probably cost the Canucks just as much as what Holtby is being paid. I doubt that they re-sign Edler till after the expansion draft and if it were up to me; he would have to be Ok with 1 or 2 year contracts going forward and a reduction in his 6 mil contract to something closer to 4.5 mil. I don't think the cap issue will be as bad as it seems if they can move a couple of contracts out. My guess is that Roussel will be moved and possibly Sutter too unless he is willing to take a bit of a pay cut and just a one or two year term. My best guess as to how the team will look next year is as follows: Miller, Petey, Boesser Pearson, Horvat, Höglander Vesey / Hawryluk, Sutter / Gaudette, Podkolzin Motte. Beagle, McEwen Edler, Hamonic Hughes, Myers Schmidt, Tryamkin Juolevi / Rathbone as the spares to slot in as required. Lots of moving pieces to the puzzle and many things might happen between now and training camp next year so my list will be the subject of many revisions no doubt. We have to make available at least 1 defenseman who meets the ED criteria - that means one of Myers, Schmidt or Juolevi will need to be exposed (unless we extend Benn with his agreement to be exposed, which might be an albatross if he isn't picked up). My guess is Myers, but at $6 million is unlikely to be picked up, especially as we will also have to expose the more attractive Rafferty and Teves if we qualify them, plus, ofc, Holtby (as well as a slew of serviceable forwards - Seattle also has to staff their Palm Springs AHL team) Edited April 3, 2021 by Googlie

Seattle will probably get an opportunity to sign a host of free agents who might be looking for a change of scenery in the Pacific North West. Considering what is going on in the world, I wonder if I was a player with this type of opportunity, if I wouldn’t wait to see all offers for reasons other than money. id like to think Edler comes in not too far above 3m , after making some great money over many years, we already know that “home” is home.. and hopefully he too sees an opportunity to slide down the chart to bolster the D core, he does play better with less minutes on his chart. .. but then again, perhaps this is the year for us to replace him by attrition, or check that UFA list for other opportunities as well. id rather see Beagle stay before Sutter, his contribution in the circle as a face off specialist is something that always pays dividends, especially in the playoffs, and his fore check prowess is keen. I see Virtannen is not on your list, and I too beleive that Podz will send him packing in a combo deal for a second round pick not too far after next season starts. i can appreciate @Provost ‘s. D core speculation: Hughes-Tryamkin Edler-Hamonic Juolevi-Schmidt Hamonic has played well with Hughes, and to move Hamonic and Tryamkin back and forth between the 1st 2 pairings would be a high end learning curve Tryamkin should respond well too. My thoughts with the D core at the moment, I have more concerns about the Cosching. I just get a sense the Baumgartner needs more AHL time coaching the position. Would love to see a Pronger, or Larry Robinson teaching the mentality of that part of the game within the game. Most players have the skills and attributes to perform well in this day and age,. But there are ways to control an offence that players like Schmidt, Joulevi , Tryamkin, Rafferty, and even Edler could grab a keener mindset from. I’ve been hoping to see Boyd perform.. I think there is a possibility of a Vesey Boyd Motte 4th line that might prove utterly tenacious in the 21-22 season. Like you, and Provost Im excited and hopeful to see a 21-22 Season of full, full scheduled , regular continental hockey.. at times this seems like an extended training camp. here’s the link to all the FA’s this summer: https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/free-agents/2021/ufa/
Kootenay Gold
Great post Sam. I always enjoy seeing your take on how you think the Canucks roster takes shape going forward. I am curious where you see Juolevi and Rathbone fitting in next year. If Tryamkin does return the RD is looking very solid IMO.

Sometimes that perch above the game gives you a broader outlook on the position you play, and the tendencies of others, including your team mates. As long as he is getting a bit heavier/stronger for his frame, he might one-up us on the player Edler has been to us. OJ has shown reasonably well for the games he has played.. it’s more about confidence now.. he needs NHL time next season to the minimum number of 50 of 82 games. Rathbone I see as a bit of a Hughes spin off, nothing wrong with that,. Perhaps he becomes the 7th D , especially if we can ice D men who are more physical like Edler Myers Tryamkin Schmidt and Hamonic. Its time to put the push on Rathbone, perhaps a minimum number of 30 of 82 games. If he dosent stick, it will be because we have an expendable light/ skillful D man that might offer an interesting return. I hope to see more of Chatfeild and Rafferty as well,. Although I don’t think they make our team full time, they are both capable of becoming assets to us, for another team to warrant more ice time to. I am enjoying the fact that JB, is possibly the first GM this organization has had who is thinking 3 years ahead, and keeping a healthy rotation in the system.
