And Schmidt has a longer history of playing as a legit top 4 D.  I have zero concerns regarding his ability.

Schmidt gives me Sbisa vibes, without the hitting

Sbisa has never EVER been even just passable as a 2nd pairing D. Think of him as a healthier Tanev with more offensive skill (though perhaps not as strong defensively as him).

Straight up I would take Meyers over Schmidt if his time as a Canucks was the criteria. Not terrible but Meyers has been a beast at times. That said the d-side game has been so disjointed that assessing performance based on it questionable.

Look who has the tougher matchups on the ice.

Well........you guys are not going to like me..................

This is a Tryamkin Thread and I apologize for doing this here.................but our Defense needs a total rejigging

Here is the plan................

#1...........Get Rathbone into some games to establish ability................(my take is he will be a above average 2 way Dman..........think Lidster with Offense)

#2...........Sign Tryamkin............................Big, no BS Dman

#3...........Trade for Zadorov......................Big, no BS Dman

#4...........Get Juolevi some more Icetime

#5...........Trade Myers

#6...........Sign Hamilton

#7...........Re-sign Hamonic

#8...........Trade Hughes Now, while he has High Value.....He can't play Defense guys!.........To NJ for 2022 1st (no Protection), 2021 1st (NYI), and Nolan Foote

#9...........Have an Edler appreciation day

Now, once your heart starts again....................hear me out

Rathbone................Hamilton

Zadorov...................Schmidt

Joulevi....................Tryamkin

Hamonic

This is a big Defense with Offensive upside.....

The Defense can be mixed and matched as Schmidt, Zadorov and Tryamkin can all play both sides, so it gives you size versatility

Hamilton basically takes Hughes money plus a little more.............

We loose Myers 6 Million, and Edlers 6 Million

IMO, this is a way harder Defense to play against, and Hamilton can generate Offense, while not being a - 19 in 43 games

And while I am on my rant.....................Eriksson will retire after he is paid his 1 million bonus, as the escrow will knock his remaining salary down substantially, and the Canucks will hire him as a European scout, for 1 Million, resulting in a very small loss for Eriksson.................

Makes for some interesting conversation Jan,

I appreciate this viewpoint,  even though it might not fly with a lot of posters.. and even I wouldn’t dare start a thread on it LOL

it worth discussing ..

I guess the question is where too , and for what..

I realize it saves us a ton of money,

and you seem to have snapped together a pretty good D core without Hughes..

Im guessing we’re looking at 2 really good picks that enter the NHL to play in 2 -3 years.

That’s about the timing I hope to see Jurmo in a Canuck Jersey.

I also like the lineup of the top 3 in this years draft..    if we were able to get Owen Powers..

with or without moving Hughes..

That makes us exciting for many years. :)

Quinn’s brother plays in NJ..

let’s be nice and trade him there for :

Miles Wood  and a first rnd pick this year, or next .

IF we got their pick this year, we could stack it with ours and trade up for first overall.   Boom..  Owen Powers.

ps.  I think the Canuck play is reflective of what after Covid symptoms are like.

If you trade Hughes make return young D man Smith 21 -- 45GP  23 PTS -- Foote

Hughes-- Lind --- For    Smith, Foote  3rd rounder

People spend generations looking for talents to redefine how hockey can be played. We find one of those players and you are like ahhhh fook it let’s not pay him instead of having the idea of how can we build around this and win some championships

That's a fresh look at reality. Just like AA demands you first have to admit that todays D is not doing the job, then you have to be bold. I believe that you may be on to some thing however i tend to think it'll take a new GM with fresh eyes to make a move such as this and a new  coach  that's willing to chnage his system

And who would run the defensive strategies for the coaching staff? If it's Baumgartner, the defense will still suffer, unless they do the smart thing and ignore that clown.

Well, I think you are right in your opinion, but I am not sure Hughes is that guy...........he is - 20, as of tonight in 40ish games.......that is a lot of rubber in the net..........

I do understand your point, I am just not sure he is all you think he is..........his value is high right now.......

If you wait a couple of years, he may just be a PP specialist, with lower value

I honestly don't know, this is just chat, but you have to come up with a answer to that..............

Maybe Tryamkin is the answer????????????????

-20 on a bad team.... it’s hard to have a good plus minus on teams like this. Now maybe some other time I’ll dive deep into it but Green scheme in my eyes is terrible it seems like we are chasing the game the entire time. Yet we have so much skill without guidance. Hell out power play is terrible but we score on it sometime just because of our skill. I think our second PP unit has what 1 goal this year that’s insane and just show the scheme we run is absolute garbage. But all in all I like Quinn in his own zone just for the fact that he thinks the game at a high level and he’s so young. When the team gets better the plus minus will look better, our defense was in shambles at the start of the year and that’s where the bulk of the minuses came from.

The people on the Zadorov thread suggesting a Virtanen for Zadorov straight up swap need to give their heads a shake.  Virtanen has negative value with his contract and Zadorov has quite a bit of value.

Of course I have no faith in it happening, but us leveraging our spare protection slot to get Zadorov makes all sorts of sense.

I don't know exactly what value a trade would be, but it would be under market value since most teams couldn't trade for him because it would result in someone else getting exposed that they also don't want to lose.

We protect Schmidt, Zadorov, and Juolevi... expose Myers.

If Myers gets taken, we save a crap ton of cap money and we still have a lot of options.

If you sign Tryamkin, and Rathbone and Juolevi earn jobs, then I can't see the team bringing Edler back, and especially if they sign Hamonic, too. Yes I know Hamonic plays the right side and Edler the left, but it's more a matter of salary cap than anything else. Edler makes $5 million this year ($6 million cap hit) and I doubt he'll re-sign for $1-1.5 million. In any event you could take the theoretical $5 million saving on Edler and sign both Tryamkin and Hamonic with maybe a few bucks left over. Understand I am not advocating getting rid of a guy who has bled blue and green all of his adult life, but just pointing out that the cold, hard reality of the money always trumps loyalty and sentiment. If I am Benning, I have the difficult but necessary talk with Edler about not having room under the cap for him next season.

Latest On Nikita Zadorov, Chicago Blackhawks

April 20th, 2021 at 8:30pm CST • By Zach Leach

The Chicago Blackhawks were reportedly listening to offers for defenseman Nikita Zadorov at the NHL Trade Deadline, but ultimately decided not to move him. However, that doesn’t mean that the two sides will stay together for much longer. As Ben Pope writesfor the Chicago Sun-Times, the Blackhawks have dropped some hints that they are not content with the big blue liner and time is running out for him to prove himself.

Zadorov, 25, is in his first season in Chicago after coming over from the Colorado Avalanche in the Brandon Saad trade this past off-season. The Blackhawks hoped that Zadorov would step into a lineup that was missing many difference-makers on the back end and would transform into a bona fide top pair defenseman. While Zadorov has still been impressive as a physical force and solid defender, there has not been much else to praise about Zadorov’s game this season. He has been firmly entrenched as a second-pair defender in terms of time on ice, is fifth in defensive scoring and even lower in per-game production, and is on pace for a career-high in giveaways, even in a shortenedseason. Zadorov has merely continued to play the same role in Chicago as he did in Colorado, that of a complementary stay-at-home defenseman. While that is not without value, it isn’t what was expected of the 2013 first-round pick and may not be worth the cost to the Blackhawks. The team has not-so-subtly expressed their frustration recently, acquiring a younger and similar style of defender in Riley Stillman and then making Zadorov a healthy scratch on deadline day after discussing him with other teams beforehand.

This off-season, Zadorov presents a number of challenges to Chicago. The impending restricted free agent will need a new contract, which at a minimum will require a $3.2MM qualifying offer. However, despite his underwhelming effort this season, Zadorov can probably argue for making more than that and has the option to file for arbitration to support that claim. The problem for the Blackhawks is that they have very few contracts coming off the books this off-season and are projected to have limited cap flexibility to make other moves. Retaining Zadorov at a higher number even further reduces that cap space without making a material change to their roster, which is only a fringe playoff team thisseason. A potential arbitration case makes using their cap space even more problematic. If the relatively young blue liner demands a long-term deal as well, that becomes an issue with a number of young players already pushing for play time. Beyond the actual contract, the only way that Chicago can ensure that they even retain Zadorov’s RFA rights beyond July 21 is to protect him in the upcoming NHL Expansion Draft. With Duncan Keith and Connor Murphy as virtual locks to be protecting, adding Zadorov to that group would mean exposing valuable veteran Calvin de Haan and the recently-acquired Stillman. Yet, if they don’t protect Zadorov he could very easily be selected and lost for nothing.

In order to avoid a difficult expansion decision and possible contract battle and arbitration case, theBlackhawks may decide to re-ignite trade talks for Zadorov once their season has come to an end. Until then, Pope notes that Zadorov will be given every chance to prove that he is worthy of a longer look in Chicago. With de Haan and Adam Boqvist currently injured and the Blackhawks fighting for a playoff spot, Zadorov has the chance to step up and finally show that he can be a complete top-four defenseman. If he succeeds, perhaps all of the off-season issues fall by the wayside in favor of keeping a rare physical specimen and good young defender at all costs. However, if he falters then the partnership between the Blackhawks and Zadorov could be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

Ya, that is why everyone has been talking about the possibility of him actually being available.  It still doesn't make him anywhere near a low value that would be traded for Virtanen straight up.

Being frustrated that he hasn't become a top pairing guy, isn't the same as him being no good.
