Pimp C
I feel you say that because you don't know very much about Kyle Pettit or Mackenzie Stewart and say that those 3 players above are better because you are more familiar with them. Pettit and Stewart aren't going to wow you in anyway in their offensive skills or lack there of but they can both be solid picks. If you were more exposed to both guys you might change your tune. The same reason why you and many others are starting to really like Forsling is because you are now exposed through the WJC how good he may be. If Pettit and Stewart had the same oppurtunity to showcase themselves in the WJC CDC and many Nuck fans would probably feel the same way. Pettit and Stewart have close to zero skill in hockey. That is why they aren't playing in the WJC, and they wouldn't even make team Latvia if they were from there. These 2 have close to no chance of making the NHL and if they do make it, they will be 13th forward/8th defensemen. The guys I wanted have a much higher chance of making the NHL and have the potential to be valuable players.

Are Archibald, Andersson and Tommernes all wasted picks then?
elvis15
Not all draft picks make the NHL. Low picks often end up in veteran roles on the farm. Are Archibald, Andersson and Tommernes all wasted picks then? Archibald has played in the NHL and Andersson and Tommernes both have at least depth NHL potential even if they haven't made it yet. Picks should be spent on players you think at least have some outside chance of making it, even if they only turn out to be role players. You shouldn't spend picks - even late rounders - on players designated to be role players for your AHL team. You can sign those guys as free agents without giving up a draft pick. I'd say Stewart has a better chance of making it in the NHL maybe than Pettit, but those chances are still pretty slim. Any pick that late in the draft would typically only be a remote chance at best, but why not shoot for the highest upside, like we did with Tommernes? Maybe most of them bust, but if you're looking to draft 'safe' in the late rounds you'll never get that boom. For instance, there was a good tidbit in today's 30 thoughts about Gustav Nyquist: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/30-thoughts-coyotes-vermette-a-wanted-man/ 25. He was not selected the first year he was eligible to be drafted. Detroit took him a year later, 121st overall in 2008. Nyquist said the Red Wings were the only team ever to request an interview with him. That process is why he’s not comfortable saying he’s landed in the NHL for good. “I’ve taken a spot, but I never want to say I feel safe for a spot.” Those are the guys you take a chance on in late rounds. RonMexico
Pettit and Stewart have close to zero skill in hockey. No need to grandstand. These guys obviously have enough hockey skills to be drafted by a NHL team.
MJDDawg
For what it's worth (nothing, basically), Craig Button awarded Forsling a bronze medal for Day 4 of the tournament. That pretty much means Button feels he was the third best player in action today. Silver was Pastrnak (1 goal, 2 assists) and Gold was Reinhart (2 goals). Heard Button on the radio just raving about him and then speaking directly to the Vancouver audience said something to the effect of "Vancouver, you've got a real good one in Forsling who's going to play many years in the NHL". This tourney has gotten me real excited about our recent draft picks.

Derp...
Well he called Virtanen the next Torres so if he's known for making the opposite happen I'm okay with that.
Guest Dasein
Great shot as advertised and can skate pretty well. Seems pretty weak with his stick and got danced a few times, but he's only 18 so he'll get better. Very excited about this guy.

Pimp C
No need to grandstand. These guys obviously have enough hockey skills to be drafted by a NHL team. You could say the same thing about Sawyer Hannay and Morgan Clark. If you're content in seeing wasted picks in the 6th and 7th rounds, while teams like Anaheim continue to pull out talent from there, thats your choice I guess. I am not sure why you are so bent out of shape over this. No teams are consistently plucking talent from the late rounds of the drafts. There is no point in worrying about how many late round failures the Canucks of the past have had. The past two drafts look promising and that's all you, and the rest of the fans of this team, need to focus on....like the player this thread is about. Forsling looks to be a potential steal. Pimp C
I am not sure why you are so bent out of shape over this. Because it bothers me that we continue to take players that are busts the moment they are picked. Its a waste of assets. And a waste of assets is a waste of assets no matter how insignificant. Guest Dasein
So far: Tied for team lead in goals (2) and points (4) with four forwards Tied for tournament lead in points by defenseman (4) with CAN's Madison Bowey Leads all defensemen in tournament in goals (2) All as an 18-year-old I wonder who'll have more points by the end of the tournament - Jake or Gustav? If you're content in seeing wasted picks in the 6th and 7th rounds, while teams like Anaheim continue to pull out talent from there, thats your choice I guess. Jim Benning projected Pettit to be a role player/4th line centre who could be a good penalty killer. Stewart is a project but his size, reach and toughness is intriguing and trained properly could be a solid number 5/6 dman. How could you honestly say that Pettit and Stewart are waste of picks when you likely haven't seen a wink of either play, and neither has played an NHL game yet, not only to mention they were drafted 6 months ago. how could you honestly make an assessment in 6 months and call them a bust? Are you a pro scout?

I ignored the rest of that crap because I know every team doesn't consistently draft NHLers in late rounds. But teams like LA, Anaheim, Detroit, Montreal are able to get good players from there once in a while because THEY DONT MAKE TERRIBLE ZERO UPSIDE PICKS AS OFTEN AS THE CANUCKS DO.
