Drew Doughty is good, but he didn't win them the cup. Los Angeles won without a superstar... although you could argue Jonathan Quick was their superstar. It was more of a team effort, and a great coach, not one player that turned things around.

Also, my other two points remain. It is incredible rare that one number one draft pick turns a team around. Unless we want the Canucks to tank for the next three years, it would be better to play hard and rebuilt by enticing players with a winning environment.

Drew Dougheeeeeee is a superstar. I hate him and love him at the same time.

Doughty was absolutely ridiculous in the series against the Hawks. He tipped the scale and because of that series, he was in the conversation as the best defenseman in the NHL. Even in the other series, he was very good.

So basically what we've learned here is we want the Canucks to tank to get first overall draft pick, but to also win the Stanley Cup in the process.

sounds legit...

Canucks picked 2nd ,3rd, 3rd and 2nd from 1970 - 1974.

They finished seventh-dead last in the East - every year ,except one sixth place finish in 70-71.

Never made the playoffs once.

Stanley Cup,eh?

I'll add some more to that

I'm sorry but everyone says rebuilding and looks to the Blackhawks and Penguins and says, "see it works". Well what about the other teams that have spent years picking up high picks and are no further because of it. (not just the canucks as nuck nit has pointed out)

Lets look at one teams draft history

2000 (4th overall)

2001 (8th overall)

2002 (1st overall)

2003 (4th overall)

2004 (8th overall)

2005 (5th overall)

2006 (6th overall)

2007 (7th overall)

2008 (6th overall)

2009 (21st overall) Finally outside bottom 14

2010 (4th overall)

2011 (traded away)

2012 (2nd overall)

11 top 10 picks in 13 years....

Is this team considered a contenders?

Would this team have even made the playoffs without a lucky goaltender trade, not related to their high draft picks?

Doesn't rebuidling and getting high picks equal a cup?

ok, Lets look at another team

1999 (1st overall)

2000 (2nd overall)

2001 (1st overall)

2002 (2nd overall)

2003 (8th overall)

2004 (10th overall)

2005 (16th overall)

2006 (12th overall)

2007 (traded away)

2008 (3rd overall)

2009 (4th overall)

2010 (8th overall)

2011 (7th overall)

2012 (9th overall)

2013 (13th overall)

2014 (9th overall)

Just incase were counting, that's 1 playoff entrance where they got swept in 4.

Is this team a contender?

Will this team even finished better than the canucks this year?

Rebuidling equal a cup .....right?

I'll do one more team (not the oilers) and this one we will go way back.

1989 (2nd overall)

1990 (6th overall)

1991 (4th overall)

1992 (5th overall)

1993 (23 overall)

1994 (9th overall)

1995 (2nd overall

1996 (3rd overall)

1997 (4th & 5th overall)

1998 (9th overall)

1999 (5th ,8th & 10th overall)

2000 (1st & 5th overall)

2001 (Traded away)

2002 (22nd overall)

2003 (15th overall)

2004 (16th overall)

2005 (15th overall)

2006 (7th overall)

2007 (traded away)

2008 (9rd overall)

2009 (1st & 12th overall)

2010 (10th overall)

2011 (5th overall)

2012 (4th overall)

2013 (15th overall)

2014 (5th overall)

What happened there? Should have had 4-5 cups in that time? but wait they only made it past the 1st round once in the 8 season that made it to the post season, That's only 8 playoff entrances out of 25 years. Canucks have experienced more playoff rounds in the last 6 years alone.

Ha but rebuilding is the way to build championship, eh?

He's a great player and obviously a key component to the King's win. However, he isn't a super star and can't carry the team on his own. There's a reason Quick was awarded the Conn Smythe and not him.

OP is saying that we won't be good enough and we will naturally just tank because of bad play and GMJB will address the issue by offloading more pieces for picks and prospects for the next year.

OP is not saying we should purposefully tank the crap out of next season.

There's a difference peeps.

At least that's what I derived from it.

Is that not what would happen naturally though. It kind of makes the OP's post surplus to requirements. Or silly maybe and just another pathetic post on tanking.

Jeez can we forget about McDavid and just try to play hard and win hockey matches. All this tanking talk seems so immature, it's like we are playing a playstation game instead of a professional sport.

The Pens certainly did not tank on purpose. They were bankrupt and almost moved to Kansas City. Their top players were moved to shed salary because their attendance dwindled.

The Blackhawks had horrible ownership. Didn't televise home games, raised ticket prices, and refused to spend money on good players.

"A somber note was struck in February 2004, when ESPN named the Blackhawks the worst franchise in professional sports.[10] Indeed, the Blackhawks were viewed with much indifference by Chicagoans for much of the 1990s and early 2000s, due to anger over several policies instituted by then-owner Bill Wirtz (derisively known as "Dollar Bill"). For example, Wirtz did not allow home games to be televised in the Chicago area, claiming it was unfair to the team's season ticket holders. He also raised ticket prices to an average of $50, among the most expensive in the league. Many hockey fans in Chicago began supporting the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves. For a time, the Wolves took a jab at the Hawks with the slogan, "We Play Hockey The Old-Fashioned Way: We Actually Win." The club under Wirtz was then subject of a highly critical book, Career Misconduct, sold outside games until Wirtz had its author and publisher arrested."

"In addition to the changes in the team's policies and front office, the younger Wirtz also made a concerted effort to rebuild the team. According to a team source, he spent money to make money.[17] "

Neither of these teams took the approach "lets be bad to get draft picks". They got lucky winning draft lotteries and getting high picks in strong draft years.

Imagine tanking in the mid 90s and trying to build at team around guys like Chad Kilger and Chris Phillips.

There wouldn't be any tanking if each team had a shot at the #1 pick. Playoff teams get one ball and non-playoff teams get two balls. Don't worry about parity because the salary cap should take care of that.

I am with you 100% on this. In fact, I would even consider taking the non-playoff teams and grouping them in reverse order - the non play off team with the highest amount of points gets first overall, and so on down.

I remember when the Winnipeg Jets traded Teemu Selanne for Oleg Tverdovsky and Chad Kilger...that may be one of the top three fleecings of all time (thankfully by then I had moved from Winnipeg to Vancouver and was slowly becoming a Canucks fan).
