Sharks fans not pleased with team's plan to hire ice girls

The hot NHL topic of late centers around maintenance of the ice surface, an admirable concern until you learn ice girls are at the core of the debate.

NHL teams employ ice girls to either cheer, appear at community events, scrape the ice in little outfits, or a combination of all three. Generally, they are paid very little and asked to work outside of their comfort zone according to a report.

The San Jose Sharks are having their own fiasco as they decided to hire ice girls and are being met with backlash that includes a Facebook page, a change.org petition, and a Twitter meltdown.

Fans are looking at the decision to hire a crew of ice girls matter of factly: spend money on girls to scrape the ice in tight outfits, or use the money elsewhere to help the team?

Sharks chief operating officer John Tortora told David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News, "We are not modeling our ice team in the same manner as other teams do in the NHL or other professional sports teams with cheerleaders."

Then why not have an ice crew instead of ice girls? "We're doing it in a way that works for us within our game experience and that is tasteful for San Jose."

The uniforms of the ice girls are said to be "more modest" than other NHL franchises and the gender split is 50/50 as far as applications go.

The job of an ice girl is fine; shovel the ice between stoppages, get rid of excess slush around the benches. It's also a fine job for a man, too.

Tortora said, "We're hoping people hold off judgment until the team is selected and we see what their functions are."

It appears as though the fans have already made up their minds.

This was from theScore today. Thought it was interesting seeing as it has been discussed among the fans before.

The BC Lions experimented a few years ago with a cheerleading/gymnastics team modelled on those U.S. college football cheerleading teams. It was also a split of guys and gals.

That experiment didn't last too long if I recall correctly, and the squad, or at least the guys on the squad, were quite often roundly boo'd. It was quite funny actually.

Needless to say, the all-girl cheerleaders returned the following season.

That's right, the world needs more people earning crap wages so that the rich can stay rich....

If the people who are hired for this job can get a better job, they'd probably do it (unless their brains are in their ermmm (.)(.) )....

if they can't get better jobs then at least they can get this one....

Jobs are being created.... beggars can't be choosers

If you just don't like seeing hot girls in skates, then dude, just say so.... we wont judge ;)

Men like to look at pretty ladies in little outfits. Hell, I am one of them. You can call it 'objectifying women' or whatever, but it's a fact of nature. I respect women as equals, that doesn't mean I can't find them attractive.

If it's about gender, then let men shovel snow also.

As for the outfits themselves, even at their worst they aren't any more daring than what figure skaters wear at the Olympics.

I have always preferred the ice girls to the dozens of stupid mascots that so many NHL teams have (including our own)

Seriously... Stanley C. Panther? Mick E. Moose? Spartacat?

I'd also go out on a limb and say that this isn't likely their sole means of income. More likely, it's just some extra spending money.

Thornton's looking at that girl thinking "puny little human".

Seriously though, its a job not some kind of slavery. If a girl is an ice girl its because she chose to be because she either enjoys it or doesn't have the education to get a better paying job (Lets face it: no one wants a low wage menial job. At the same time, SOMEONE needs to do those kinds of jobs for society to function properly). You would think that more jobs > complaining about beautiful women who don't mind being looked at. I'm not a girl but I imagine women are already used to it by that age.

Anything anyone ever does, someone's always around to complain :picard:.
