Ryan Johansen and the Columbus Blue Jackets made some significant progress toward a contract agreement recently, the Columbus Dispatch reports.

There are a few things to note before anyone gets too excited, however. For one thing, its unclear how much more significant progress is needed. Its also crucial to note that such good news is coming from Johansens representatives, while the Blue Jackets didnt respond to the Dispatchs requests for confirmation.

Even so, the report points to a very important area of progress. At first, the 21-year-old restricted free agent was very much against a shorter bridge contract, but now it sounds like his side is bending to the idea of a two or three-year deal.

Money might still be a sticking point between the two sides, but it makes sense that the Blue Jackets might balk at a longer term. Theyd likely prefer to see Johansen replicate (or even top) his performance from 2013-14, as he saw a huge leap over his previous production.

Despite what might be occasionally icy talks, it seems clear that both sides want to get a deal done.

Ryan wants to be a Blue Jacket and he wants to be in Columbus, Johansens agent Kurt Overhardt said.

That has never been an issue in any of this. He loves it there.

Overhardt notes that Johansen was very pleased that the time re-signed Brandon Dubinsky, as you can see from this cheeky tweet:

The fourth pick of the 2010 NHL Draft scored 63 points in 82 games and six points in as many playoff contests last season after only managing 33 points in his first 107 career NHL appearances. Considering that huge leap and his tantalizing potential, its a bit difficult to forecast what kind of deal is appropriate for both sides, especially since Johansen is an RFA.

Perhaps well find out before training camp?

Considering Dubinsky got $5.85 mill for 6 years, except Johansen close to that. Dubs is a different player though and does it all, one of the most underrated guys in the league. Plus he's proven he can do it year after year whereas Ryan is just starting his career.

I'm guessing either 3-4 years @ $6.5 mill or 5-6 years @ $6 mill.

6.5 million?? A little much for a 21 year old, no? I seriously doubt he's asking for THAT much.

6.7M? For one good season? Lets be realistic here. A 6.7M bridge contract is laughable. He'll get around 4/4.5M tops likely. One good season doesn't earn you the right to demand upwards of 6M.

This. I doubt he'll even get 5.0 mill. He needs to prove himself again and again.. then we could talk around 5-6 mill range. Great player though and he'll lead the CBJ organization to further success after year's of sucking.

Sure, if he can prove in the next couple of years that he's worth it, then he'll deserve 6M. Until then, he doesn't.

63 points at the age of 22! He's only getting better. 6 mill is cheap in todays world for a top line center.

Our hockey lords who art in HoF, hallow be thy name and grace the Canucks by allowing clb to sign a short deal with Johansen that ends in Ufa status in a couple yrs which will result in a Vancouver signing bringing ourselves a local first line C.

Amen.
